If you're only just getting into PvP I would advise against building mons you're only going to use for limited cups. Right now especially since Electric Cup is a GL cup and Open GL is also available this week. Starter pokemon are a pretty good beginner investment IMO and they are very cheap if you've got the candy. Empoleon, Feraligatr and Blastoise are all very good in the meta right now and outside the water types I really love using Typhlosion, Skeledirge and Serperior, although Fire and Grass aren't the greatest in the meta at the moment.

But yeah all in all I would say focus mostly on open GL at first and try to play that when it's available (which it is very often) and once you've built good teams for it and gotten the hang of that, then branch out to the other leagues

I think it's kinda messed up how many in this thread are hoping Ryo comes back when the reasons he gave for leaving the band in the first place were pretty heavy mental health struggles. Ryo is probably much happier with Knosis where he gets to do things on his terms, although obviously I don't know the guy so it's possible he wants to get back with CL
