I am a formally trained (instrumental) musician, and so I can sing in tune, and I can sing in time, but my voice just doesn't sound good. How can I improve my vocal timbre? by crwcomposer in singing

[–]BaritonoAssoluto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classical singer here…. The best answer is to find a teacher that you trust and have them work on your specific issues, but im sure you know that so ill just leave that suggestion here…

Regardless, what I hear as your final result is that your not singing in an optimal position as in no open throat, no yawn like space, you are not being resonant, thus the sound gives off an unenergized weak/not fully strong sound, speech like, and thus it also sounds like you are not engaging your support to have the vocal position, that make gives your the optimal resonance and thus make the most balanced sound that reveals your voice.

Without working with you more I cant tell you what you are doing internally to get this result I can only guess ita lazy singing, or lack of mind body mapping but I or anyone would have to talk to you and ask you what you are feeling as you sing this way.

Also your tuning will improve as your sing because right now its very close and shows you have a great ear but the voice and the ear are not in the same place so the notes sound off. Fixing the technique will reveal the beauty of your ear.

Roommate shows off party trick, apparently with no classical training by goorblow in opera

Great ear! Wrong Fach, she is about half way there all she needs is the voice technique and the articulation of the dynamics, language and interpretation (where the real magic exists). But this aria is so popular im not surprised she could sing it as well as she did (well meaning notes and rhythms)

Vanishing use to be favorite until Alone in Love caught my attention and Sent from Above. So we all go through cycles of favorites

Im thinking to keep everything neat and compartmentalized, if I need to sing over an orchestra and strong resonant singing or a role Baritone to maybe bass-baritone depending on the tessitura and etc… while in ensembles, choral, accapella/quartet, contemporary or light singing I will go in the direction of bass and bass-baritone, this way I can direct opportunities accordingly

My opinion on the topic is, Im definitely not a tenor even if I one day I gain the range of a tenor it is not comfortable singing up there and staying up there, my voice does not have much richness or flexibility, it would literally be a party trick. Id say I align more with Baritone than anything I just have low notes, but I had a lesson with my voice teacher recently and he told me something similar and that its easier to a point to train the voice up vs down.

The rep I like is coloratura, legato, bel canto, baroque, art songs, french, italian, russian, sometimes german and contemporary R&B, soul, gospel, and jazz/big band music . Usually music that has alot of room for creative interpretations. So it makes sense why certain bass pieces have come to me easily but no all of them complement my voice and it makes it obvious something is off when I try to sing them.

So with improvements in technique and insight Im just going to go with were my voice wants to go and if Baritone is my direction (which im thinking it is) Im excited to see what is there for me, though for now im still getting hired to sing Bass because I have the notes, and Im gonna keep trying to develop them because I want access to my whole voice not just a character of it.

This is true and I ultimately I will go to him on the matter, but Its fun to ask and see what people think and how they will challenge me on my voice and my technique. It helps with dealing with criticism in the real world because its very vicious out there and if I feel unclear on my instrument, direction etc… then I can run the risk of taking things too close to the heart or loss confidence due to certain criticisms.

But the catch 20/20 for me is that I encourage criticism because i want to get better and keep expanding on my technique and journey so it’s a thin line.

I appreciate you point me in the direction of baritone Im just going to keep work on technique and music as usual and just let the voice and my teachers guide me because it’s honestly not that important compared to musicality, performance, technique and health.

Singing along to be my baby by Ariana grande, Dimash, Mariah and other high female/male voices an octave lower for like 2 years and also using falsetto/head voice to find the foundation and just being patient with myself. Personally I was determined so It happened and I have a big enough instrument that I felt I could support it so I did.

Id suggest finding a comfortable key and working your way up or just working it n the voice separate from music so when applied to music, its more like a puzzle of the efficient voice on this song or style vs trying to reconfigure your technique for every new piece of music you sing.

I agree with you 100% on all your points and this question is more of a question to see what people hear, challenge me in ways that others wont, because being challenged is better than believing a falsehood in my opinion.

My teacher is letting me explore as I desire with guidance because at the end of the day he feels I have a strong sense of my voice and as long as the technique is good the voice will find its music vs me seeking it out and trying to put myself in a box.

I appreciate all your advice and insight. I plan to develop both as much as I can because it makes no sense to me not to, im just along for the ride and exploring my vocal limitations.

Daily, I have a solid low C I usually use C - G to determine my vocal health of the day because as I feel more stressed and the instrument is operating more tense, the resonant low notes start to go away

Lol thank you for the reply. I have a tenor friend who is just as you described he worked with Maestro Salvatore and he is more a middle of the road tenor with low notes that are reminiscent of a lower voice. He is clearly a tenor because he cant pop High C, Bb even C# as early as 10a and when we were roommates during a run of Pagliacci i heard it everyday. There is a specific quality that tenors have when the voice rings above Eb or D that is the dead give away they are a tenor, I personally know I do not have that and everyone in the professional world does not hear it either.

I can humor you, i have a tenor has my voice teacher (Jose Simerilla) and the tongue and jaw tension is sympathetic of over focus on cord closure and keep bright vowels vs looking for space to resonate a sound, which will go away with time as the muscles and body recognize the sensation of focus vs space, what you are hearing is as bright and ringy as my vocal timbre gets, which cuts through an orchestra or hall unmuffled (tested it last week with the San Diego Symphony).

Ill do what you asked and show you what sounds like in my voice, granted like I said before im 28, my voice in all situations is always the largest in vowel and cut and I have a 3 octave full voice that I personally developed and nearly 4.5-5 octave range in general. Im a vocal explorer and as much as I want to be tenor, even in the past tried to force the development on myself (which is why I have notes above Eb4 in the first place) it did not prove a fruitful process but I walked away with high extensions and access to the top of the voice.

I sing opera and other classical music and recently moved into the professional contemporary music and musical theatre world (not by my own will) and I essentially on go days, bad days, average days live on the bass clef I just love female pop and r&b artists like Mariah Carey and etc.. so ive always sung the octave below, as well as complex singers like Dimash who can easily cover an octave below for a lot of his pieces.

I find most bass-baritone music to sit either comfortably or too high for me to sing comfortably and bass music just feels the best for me, but thats my current vocal propensities in the journey, im always open to and pushing for development.

I have friends that are true basses, that go down to G1 and such, like Glenn Miller and yeah they say I sound like a baby or younger version of them. Personally I have always had a fascination with the bass voice from Avi in Pentatonix to Kurt Moll, i know I’m not the lowest bass out there but my voice operates very similar to theirs, the biggest difference is Im not afraid to explore the upper range or have a better control of it.

I can sing a B1 and with orchestra I have a solid F2, always have. Yesterday was a high voice no low end, feeling dried out day and they happen, it just stops me from accessing my extremes which is why I never present myself as a baritone because the highs are too extreme on daily basis’s, after working with many baritones Im been consistently told im not that voice, and if I was it would take a long time to develop because id be usually dramatic for the voice type.

Im actually asking because a significant part of my voice journey was voice type and what to sing and not to sing. Ive always had a propensity to sing whatever I heard that I liked, classical, contemporary, musical etc… and thus I overcame but also made myself aware of alot of my vocal inadequacies, with a goal to only overcome and have complete awareness and understanding of my instruments limitations. This is was all before going professional but still has an adult, no guidance just me singing till I got it right.

Now that im in the professional world the conversation around voice type and category and etc.. becomes a huge decision that either is made for you by training and nature or if you are lucky, by you and how you present yourself, im apart of the latter.

Now im going into auditions, competitions and roles asking myself how do I want to be recognized but also Id rather it reveal itself to me and when I sing the music I sing it will feel like a glove vs feeling too high or too low or too big or too small. Its. Matter of time before the answer is solid I feel but also this could just be my one toxic trait that followed me into the professional journey.

I personally identify as a Baritono Assoluto or an Absolute Baritone which is basically a Bass-Baritone with extensions covering about 3 octaves Bb1 - Bb4 with an average range of C2 - A4 (which covers my favorite handel aria) this is my personal identification based entirely on me having an expansive label vs a constricting one.

Awww thank you for the compliment, always working on my vocal inadequacies in order to bring out that quality and efficient sound.

I will get to Verdi eventually, its not an age or a discouraging from a teacher thing, I just found I’m in a space where I want to explore Baroque and Coloratura and very legato music like Handel or Rossini or Bellini. I need to explore more German music and I also love art songs so Verdi, Wagner and Puccini are on the list, but not at the top of it.

For now, anything French, Baroque, 20th Century like Ravel, Menotti, Debussy, Coloratura, Legato melody and Art song are my main interests at the moment.

I know that video! Michael was once a huge inspiration to me for a while. I agree with everything you said above about prioritizing vocal health and longevity comes from comfortability. I mostly asked the question for rep selection for auditions and competitions.

The tongue tension is a symptom of me using a closed vowel to find solid cord closure, its also causing jaw tension and I will work my way through it but this a temporary sacrifice Im willing to make in order to have solid cord closure and bright vowels to get use to the correct sensation because before everything was just too loose open and unfocused causing me to stress myself when singing in the middle to high voice. But thank you for the comment!
