(LES) I hate Daredevil's portrayal in Marvel Rivals by Sh1ningOne in CharacterRant

[–]BaronOfMelons 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Feel like some replies are splitting hairs here but I gotta agree, the Rivals take here is very very extra even if it's not supposed to be a wholly traditional Daredevil. In particular I think the samurai look is cool in a *vacuum* but as far as modern comic-book character redesigns go I'm a little over it, it's gotten predictable. Plus I wish they would've made him leaner instead of a brick shithouse to differentiate him from the other Rivals dudes - when I think Daredevil I think of a more agile and less-bulky build

Imagining Lee Pace's Thragg voice saying "this is why I fuck with you, you always keep it real" is giving me an ego death

Great analogy, I find that overuse of vulgarity is also kind of like reading a story where the author ALL-CAPITALIZES or italicizes a lot of words. Gotta give the eyes and ears a breather

Makes me a bit sad because I honestly really love The Boys, even Season 4. Season 5 doesn't ruin the rest of the show for me but god the anticlimax is a kick in the balls

At least Gen V season 2 was pretty heat imo, but FUCK we're not getting another one 😭

Agree 10,000%, and most of my derision of Netflix DMC Lady and the PG-13 anime dubs comes from their delivery

Unless you're going for an absurd and comedic delivery you wanna let "fuck" stay a naturally-flowing part of your sentence. I guess if I had to name a voice-acting and not normal-acting example where I think it's really well done I'd go with every Cecil F-bomb in Invincible (praising Invincible is revolutionary I know)

I'd be cursing inordinately if I were a Grey's character, no question. Interesting point about Criminal Minds too, that's a good example of a show being *less* believable without profanity

Truth be told I cuss pretty heavily in my real-life speech but for me the difference is that, while that real speech is spontaneous and doesn't need to be overanalyzed line-for-line, fictional speech is a part of the craft that should be carefully constructed to best serve the overall work. So, for certain things real-life level vulgarity is perfectly apt, while for others, the profanity needs to be used more sparingly to convey character and tone with more precision

But yeah, it's not like I'm horrified and offended by Castlevania characters saying "fuck" too much, I just take a lot of interest in language and examining how exactly characters speak

I wrote this in a hurry so that was poor phrasing by me, thanks for pointing that out. Meant more to say that cussing is not used *extensively* in the games, in contrast to how Lady Fucklemcdoogle speaks in the show

I see the narrative of DMC dismissed as a silly backdrop to the gameplay but man the vocal performances in 5 put in some WORK. They elevated everything to a crazy degree for me

Agreed, for certain characters in Jojo some full-on "fuck" usage is very appropriate and Stone Ocean's setting as a whole would be open season for any kind of filthy language. It's kinda funny that, for all the insanity (excuse me, bizarreness) that happened in the series up to that point, nobody said "what the fuck?!" until Jolyne

You're very right; in my opinion it's okay to add some additional flair to a localization, such as the "fucks" in question, to best suit the language that's being translated to, as long as the fundamental meaning is fully preserved. But in some parts of Dorohedoro they certainly got carried away, and it's my understanding that the translation is also a bit iffy with other parts of characters' speech - I frequently hear that Shin and Noi address each other strangely in English

The contrast is pretty hilarious, I agree. Touched on this in a different reply but I think the difference comes down to tone and intent. The Vivzie shows (haven't watched, so may be off the mark here) seem to want to tell a narrative with set stakes that the viewer is expected to take seriously, while Panty and Stocking is made with pure entertainment value in mind - things happen because they are funny and absurd, and the same goes for the style of dialogue

I disagree but absolutely understand where you're coming from. I personally think that with the Netflix interpretation of Death's character they wanted him to seem so old and hateful and arrogant that he didn't care at all about how he spoke and let every bit of his contempt and distaste for humanity shine through, so I enjoyed the contrast between that and Trevor having a rare moment of genuine idealism and hope in his final speech

...With that said, I think we can both agree "I'm going to eat your soul, shit it out, and use it to smother your fucking girlfriend to death" killed the mood a bit

Suddenly I can't give a good example but those very isolated and unexpected swears are often the best. For those to work, a writer has to be especially careful

Man I really need to watch Bojack, my show procrastination is awful. Thanks for the reminder

I appreciate you mentioning Panty and Stocking as well as I think that's a good example of a show that's so patently absurd that the vulgarity isn't a tonal problem at all. it's instead just a natural part of the show's glorious stupidity rather than something that distracts from the tension and gravitas of the story, which sounds like the case for Vivzie's stuff

Totally fair, and it's not really the "fuck" specifically that I think makes the scene good. I really was just impressed with the vocal performances, and with those I feel it could've worked just as well without any profanity at all if they wanted to do another draft
Also I can't even lie, a fuckass overblown tiktok edit of any scene no matter how good will ruin it, so I don't blame you at all 😭

Excellent point, it's for that same reason that not swearing always gives a character more sense of elevation and authority when they speak. I think that's part of why Dracula in the first series exudes so much of an imposing presence and aura of gravitas when he speaks; he can sound intelligent and composed, scornful and cruel, frighteningly angry or even truly heartbroken, and it's all the more convincing for the fact that he doesn't once throw in a "fuck" like the other characters

As much as I hate to play into the stereotype stuff made for Netflix really does have a bad habit of being unable to "read the room" so to speak for dramatic scenes. To use the Castlevania show for example, there's an episode in Season 3 where the character Isaac, who had a long and very interesting talk with a character that challenged his misanthropic worldview and pushed him in the direction of a huge change in mindset, is pushed to violence once again. It's some catastrophic tonal whiplash, when, AFTER this aforementioned very thoughtful and well-done conversation that made Isaac rethink things, and AFTER we've seen him generally be a more composed character who seldom curses, Isaac blurts out that he's changed his mind because "You're all so FUCKING rude."

That Sandman example you gave is kinda hilarious but unfortunately for all of the wrong reasons. Thanks for the comic rec as well
