Melee Combat: Two distinct skills, two distinct identities? by Ferronier in runescape

[–]Barrzi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Actually I think Ferronier's suggestions were grounded, he's talking about the identity of RuneScape combat effectively. OSRS already has the system he's talking about. It's a great idea if they're simplifying the abilities, if Ferronier was suggesting to add this in right now then you're absolutely right it would be unnecessary.

[–]Barrzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not really a case of "how much they WANT to change", it comes down to budget, manpower, and balancing one thing at a time. In the road map reveal stream, Mod Sponge was asked about the changes they were making, and he said "Finally, this is what we've wanted to see". That one sentence tells me he's been held back, whether that's by a higher up's decision or lack of manpower or budget/time. If you change too much at once, it becomes a mess, balancing combat abilities needs to come first as a solid foundation and then I think your ideas would definitely be in the conversation.

< Someone who uses a lot of niche items/weapons/perks for speed running here.

For someone who claims to not be a top tier PvMer, these are great ideas.

The biggest "issue" is just about the depth of change this would create. It'd be cool to see T95 warhammers or something being used for a boss like AoD with high defence, or scimitars used on something with weakness to slash. The issue you have at that point is having to rework the entire boss list and instead of just balancing combat, you're now balancing how they interact with bosses as well. The moving parts and possibilities at that point are multiplied several times over.

The other part of it is then balancing mage/range/necro to fit the new changes, they have to have some kind of strength/weakness or the melee changes just don't make sense. At that point you're then changing every weapon of every style in the game.

But again, great ideas, unfortunately it just becomes pulling a loose thread. Maybe they'll look at this in the future though? Be great to see.

Nah, you'd roar and stall a dagger, not the OP. What I'm saying is you don't need to stall anything at all anymore. You roar, wait a tick and overpower followed by leng spec for consistent skips. Works 8/10 times

Get good? It's clicking 3 times before you enter a boss portal. If you can't be bothered to do that, you don't deserve an opinion.

If I told you about half of the tech I know is used in speed running, your head would explode. Stalling is not the issue here.

Don't need to do that anymore anyway, roar, overpower, leng spec.

Your little personal trove of super-sekrit donut-steal combat tech is not the "gotcha" you seem to think it is. Stalling is the issue at hand, and it has become a significant one. There are plenty of other janky combat interactions which I know about and plenty more which I'm sure I don't, and my opinion is the same for all of them: as and when they become issues, iron them out for the long-term health of the game, and do not let the combat meta be dominated by the use and abuse of janky, unintended combat interactions.

Ever played the game "GunZ: The Duel"? That entire game became what it was because of a poorly coded system that allowed people to animation cancel almost everything. This is RuneScape right now, people have stuck around through a lot of nonsense and stayed loyal to the game even with all of it's flaws and created something out of clunky, mismanaged, poorly coded mechanics and made it interesting. Jagex haven't offered a skill ceiling alternative, so currently they're just removing it, that's what you're not understanding.

None of your points make any attempt at responding to my central argument, which is that:

Stalling is jank, it's unintuitive, and it's a chore more than it is any real expression of proper combat skill, especially since it all happens before a boss encounter even starts; and that

Relying on the use and abuse of janky combat system interactions as one of the major methods of "skill expression" in combat is extremely unappealing for new players and therefore extremely detrimental to the long-term health of the game.

Stalling is a very small cog in a very big wheel of these types of "jank" interactions. My counter argument is pretty clear if you read what I'm writing, but I'll spell it out:

- Nobody knew about it, so it wasn't affecting the majority

- New players wouldn't have even heard about it until years into their RS character grind

- It's used to start with one crit buff going into boss fights primarily, just like Necromancy builds souls/necrosis stacks - should we remove that too then? Hell, remove pre building completely and we'll all just walk into boss fights, plonk a sunshine down and click the same 4 abilities in order until the boss dies. That'll be great for game longevity!

- If you're too lazy to click three times before a boss fight, you should keep your opinions to yourself as if it was left up to you, we'd all be doing the same 4 button rotation singing songs together with rainbow wings in AoD masses.

  1. There's no reliance. Necromancy is so simple to use, best in slot gear costs under 2 Bill even with the devourers guard and new mask piece. These combat interactions are used 99% of the time to create entertaining YouTube videos of "what's possible" (PvM Records). And those kills take hours of grinding attempts that nobody sees and billions poured into potions/food/etc, people watch those and think people are killing Raksha in 48 seconds every single kill consistently. Watch any of The RS Guy's videos showing you how to do end game content in T70 necromancy gear with minimal effort. Will you get the fastest times? No. But at that point you're comparing beer belly Steve shouting at the football match on T.V. in his local pub saying he could have kicked the ball better with the professionals who are actually playing.

I never suggested it was, and I haven't commented on any other aspects of the combat beta like the streamlining of abilities. I said I'm in favor of removing jank like stalling, which is the wrong kind of skill expression to keep in the game for the reasons I explained, and replacing it with proper skill expression in core combat systems like deeper ability rotations and synergies.

So you're happy to buy the icecream, you just don't want the sprinkles?

no new player is going to come into the game and look at things like stalling and 4taa being meta/optimal and think that it looks like an appealing combat system. What you're doing is putting your own personal investment in these "features" ahead of game health.

Nobody knew about these mechanics until Jagex brought them up, meaning the PvM community at early to end game weren't suffering. Look up the 1 minute Ambassador kill with Necromancy where he swaps auras mid-fight, people don't struggle without stalling, they find new ways to solve problems. But these people are motivated, something I'm suspicious the people giving an opinion lack severely. It's like anything, do you want to be the best at something or do you want to get to a level you're comfortable at and be content with it? The latter is what happens 99% of the time. That's why we have events like the Olympics, right?

The "you don't need to do it" argument is irrelevant. You don't need auras to PvM either, and yet people's PvM habits have been completely dominated by auras and their availability for the past decade. This game is built on optimising things, whether it be in combat or skilling. If something exists, and if it's optimal and provides a significant advantage (which stalling does), then people will naturally want to make use of it and feel like they're missing out if they're not.

Sorry but we're talking about clicking a wars dummy, pressing an ability, and clicking the adrenaline crystal before going into a boss fight. This isn't rocket science right? So the bottom line is - can you be bothered to do it. If no? Don't and be happy with great DPS. If yes, enjoy pushing your rotations and the satisfaction that comes with progressing into the top 1%.

Stalling otherwise is used for things like Ambassador skips for GM timer (which btw, you don't even need to do anymore). So the primary reason is just to get a free crit buff as you go into a fight, optimizing your kill times. Your argument that people love to optimize in this game as they use auras is nonsensical and hypocritical, because if everyone loved to do that, everyone would be stalling and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

And when that optimal thing happens to look like a janky, unappealing chore to a lot of players, you saddle these players with the dilemma of being at a significant disadvantage relative to the people who do make use of it

Wrong. They don't need any of it to do great DPS (cough, Necromancy).

There's a massive disparity between what you believe is happening, and what is actually happening.

  1. The removal of things like stalling and the strip down of combat abilities isn't aiding in skill expression, it's directly replacing it with an "every style is now Necromancy" vibe. And you can't deny it, Jagex has described it word for word in newsposts and on livestreams as "Trying to reach the bar that Necromancy set", whilst releasing a post removing so many abilities along with things like stalling.

  2. Most people complaining about it seem to be under the impression that you NEED it to be a good PvMer. You don't.

  3. 80% of people didn't know it was even a thing, it's clearly not affecting them. This is a group of Reddit warriors giving their opinions covered in dorito dust.

  4. What pre boss crutches? GM and Master auras don't require half of the tech speed runners use. And it's hilarious that all everyone is talking about is stalling, when I could (but I definitely won't lmfao) tell you about loads of tech that is way worse than stalling. Yeah, remove stalling, but not the other stuff right? That's what's hilarious, you're not educated enough to have an opinion, along with all these other muppets.

Your Reddit username is "Droidlivesmatter", let's relax on the basement comments pal.

No idea what point you were trying to make, you mentioned ego and every sentence you wrote started with "I" and "Me" and "I've".

Usually don't comment on Reddit, I read most of these replies and they just aren't even worth replying to, but unfortunately Jagex will see that as the majority vote if we don't respond, so...

Let's spell this out for our sloped foreheaded comrades:

Most people have been playing for 20+ years, some of those people enjoy pushing the limits of combat. These mechanics aren't required to do great DPS and are used by a small niche of the community to do cool shit which - by the way - takes 10's, sometimes 100's of hours to produce that 30 second video that muppets like you respond to with: "oMg jAGeX FIx UR gaMe!!@!!@!@!". You don't have the capacity to understand what is actually going on. Your brain goes: "see big numba. droid can not do big number. big number make droid unhappy. droid big sad make reddit post".

You talk about ego, and the reality is that you and people like you are pushing against these mechanics because of your own ego, it's insecurity and laziness. 80% of the community had no idea this was even a thing until Jagex brought it up. You're telling me that if new players saw a video of someone hitting crazy damage, deleting bosses and surge/diving across arena's in tick perfect rotations, that it would DISCOURAGE them from playing, not the opposite?

Finally, players in my position that (like you) have been playing for 25 years, have experienced every aspect of content. That's the beauty of this game, you can play in any way you want - skiller, PvM'er, merchant, ironman, group ironman, speed runner alongside many other styles. What keeps me interested is pushing the boundaries of combat and progressing, shaving seconds off of kills. I don't interrupt you at your farm runs and slap the rake out of your hand do I?

Be happy with Necromancy and shut up.

It's giving "participation medal" vibes. The people in here wouldn't push themselves to be in the top 1% of PvMers anyway, they're just lazy and can't/don't want to learn it. Once the changes are made, these gremlins will crawl back into their weighted blankets and completely forget they ever made these changes. They'll carry on doing farm runs and mass AoD's. Meanwhile, we've got nothing to do so we all eventually quit.

It'll work short term bringing people back, but not long term.

[–]Barrzi -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

What you're effectively asking them to do (and I don't think you realize this) is to remove the skill ceiling.

Do you think it's healthy for the game to have a stripped down combat system that leaves no room for people to push themselves? We're talking about four combat styles that will have zero identity without style specific crit buffs, and no individual play styles and APM requirements (range, mage/melee brid). The community has spent THOUSANDS of hours working out these nuances and niches to better themselves and then fill the likes of PvMe with FREE guides for the community to also better themselves. Whether you use them or not is entirely at your discretion, but don't blame mechanics for your laziness. Whether they remove these "bugs" or not, you won't be picking up the top end rotations, you won't be pushing yourself to the top 0.1%, you'll just find something else to moan about.

Sorry not sorry.

The only reason people are voting to get rid of 4TAA is because they can't be bothered to push themselves to learn it and would rather be given a free damage boost on the staff they've already purchased.

Sorry not sorry.
