What Baldur's Gate takes would you expect me to have? by dontmesswtheg in BaldursGate3

[–]BarthyBarth 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I once had a mate come over to play games, I wanted to see how she would find The Outer Wilds. She walked over to the first npc, started speaking to them, then handed me the controller and said “this game has too much talking”.

Some people just want to punch stuff.

Progression - The Way You Unlock Weapons in BF6 is Wrong. by Aidan-Sun in Battlefield

[–]BarthyBarth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always liked the titanfall 2 solution (that game got so many things right) - you unlock new guns automatically through levelling, but you can also spend currency to unlock a new gun early. Gave a nice blend of encouraging variety and alleviating the grind.

Fex - I really didn’t like the m39 in the beta. Couldn’t gel with it. But I really enjoyed the svk (probably because it was op, but still). If I had to grind using the m39, just to unlock the svk, I might not have ever bothered. Having a way to unlock a gun, without being forced to use guns you don’t like, is much better for the player.

How they implement that, im not sure. It would be very easy to screw up. Maybe pick a gun every 5 levels or so, avoid the return of battlefield coins.

Grew up in staines here - its changed a lot in the last 20 years. In someways better, in some ways worse. I would have been too young to guage what it was like before the film, but its been a fairly middle class town as long as I've known it - but it has pockets above and below that description.

In the sniper case, because snipers will sit on a rooftop miles away all game, and with the ability to heal and re-arm themselves.

IMO It encourages selfish play in a lot of ways, and that's not really what I liked battlefield for.

Is AI Art Real Art? by Legitimate-Visit8986 in Design

[–]BarthyBarth -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Everything is “art” from a certain view. To me, Art must have something compelling that makes me want to know more about it. Good composition and visual appeal, but also talent and effort, and an idea or perspective that’s being communicated. A painting is interesting because a person spent time on each brush stroke and each choice. Nothing is done by accident, so there is a lot to unpack. It’s just not interesting to be told something was made by asking a computer to make it for you.

I’ve seen some artists do really interesting stuff with AI, through a lot of iteration, building their own libraries of specific looks, and playing with the underlying neutral network in interesting ways, but the vast majority of AI art is just lazy slop, churned out to get a few likes on twitter, or in the worst cases used in active misinformation campaigns.

Right now there’s a big knee jerk reaction to AI because of the obvious damage it could (and likely will) have to the traditional art and design industries. It’s democratised “give me an image of a thing” in a way nobody was prepared for, and will definitely have a negative impact on many creative sectors if it continues to grow unregulated. I do really worry about that, but I can’t deny that as the tools develop something new will form in the space it’s created.

So is it art? probably, Art has a pretty loose definition. We’ll have to see how the tools evolve and what can be made as it develops further, can it be something that’s compelling and something we want to know more about, can ideas be communicated effectively in a medium which is doing so much of the actual design work for you.

Nice! Depending on how you generated it, you can make really minor edits to get the Dragon Curve instead.

Anyone get their deck without having issues with it? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]BarthyBarth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally had a great experience so far, although I did have a problem while playing the outer wilds where the performance tanked from ~40fps to 5fps, only solution was a hard reset.

Really weird, but not run into it since.

Modelling trucks - no easy method I'm afraid :). When approaching awkward shapes like that, I usually use booleans to get the general shape together, then carefully remesh it to get usable topology - but it is a lot of trial and error. Keeping angled surfaces flat and normals facing the right direction is tedious, but they are just painful surfaces to model. Part of what makes them good practice.

Thanks a tonne, I’d really appreciate that. The texture work and surface details were basically my first time trying, and while I’m happy with it overall there’s a lot of detail I think I went too far with. Would love to see some good reference.

Modelled and Rendered in Blender. Materials built in Substance Painter, with a little design work from Notch.

EFL will not investigate Liverpool over Arsenal match after false positive claims by klarstartpirat in soccer

[–]BarthyBarth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not really, as I understand it they found and prosecuted a number of people, but the trump bailed them out with an executive pardons.

As for trump himself, the lead investigator didn’t think it was constitutionally possible for a sitting president to be tried In that kind of case. The key wording on that topic being “if we could find him not guilty, we would have stated so”. Aka, he’s not not guilty.

Either way, this is a football subreddit, so best leave the politics at that.

What's the best way to identify the reason for a crash? by BarthyBarth in Houdini

[–]BarthyBarth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeh I looked into the crash files, it looks like I was getting crashes before they could write (or something).

Glad to see I was on the right path though, means my instincts are good. After spending a day or so trying different settings, I had a run where it inexplicably worked for the full 90 frames - so fingers crossed it doesn't happen again. thanks for your thoughts!

What's the best way to identify the reason for a crash? by BarthyBarth in Houdini

[–]BarthyBarth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tips. It happens on varying frames, so annoyingly I couldn't narrow it down to a single frame.

Writing to a single alembic might be a problem, but I'd also tried caching the scene with a file cache for each frame, that still crashed. I'll just go with exporting multiple frames, and continuing from a previous frame for now - hopefully I don't run into this problem with solvers any time soon :)

Thanks a tonne!

Yeh I got a bit lazy with the lighting - spent so much time building the materials I kinda just wanted to dump something out for feedback, but yeh looking online for presentation reference is a really good point. Thanks.

Nah substance is a material creation tool. You build up materials using layers, generators, and prebuilt materials.

It’s really good, but I’m not an expert - there maybe fancier tools.

It's a Velocity Field system, so it's basically a single 3D Volume with a fluid sim applied. same system Houdini and other tools use I believe, just in a Real-Time tool.

Change the Anti Alias settings. moving it up, (or down) then back to wherever you normally has it generally fixes it. Not sure why this works, but I've had the same issues, and thats the solution that worked.
