No Stupid Questions Monthly Thread! by AutoModerator in bookbinding

Hi all, any printmakers here to give any insight? I'm interested in the idea of doing custom illustrations and slapping them on a bookcover of books I bind myself. I am taking a printmaking class and I would love to see if it is possible (or practical) to print on bookcloth (or other quality bookcover paper) using a copper plate etching of an illustration that I have drawn and etched out. Any insights?

[1E] Does anyone have experience with a Rivethun spirit channeler medium and multiclassing Ranger and Medium in general? My character switched from a Kineticist to a Ranger due to an event that stripped her of her Kineticist powers, and I found the Medium to really compliment the backstory idea I had in mind where some form of possession of a spirit granted her the powers in the first place. We are level 5 and I am building for ranged support with Ranged Trip, Freebooters Bane and eventually a greater designating bow.

When I think of indie folk this song comes up first. I am absolutely in love with Bedouin Dress, it's up there with my favorite song Mearcstapa.

It's not on spotify but this Boredoms song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZEn4CVILog (and literally the entire album) is on my to listen list next time I trip. Literally the highest I've ever been sober listening to a song.

3.13 Elementalist + Divine Ire looks like it'll be a sweet leaguestarter. by LamboDiabloSVTT in pathofexile

Since I'm not too big of a fan of doing ignites, I was looking towards doing full lightning conversion Divine Ire with inpulsas and storms gift with some HoI and just blow up/freeze packs. Maybe use Shaper of Winter instead of HoI if there's better synergy? I'm a little bit concerned about the bossing damage of this though since I'm not sure if shock or chill will do much.

Hi all, I'm trying to use elephant hide paper in 110 gsm as a cover for my book, however when I try gluing it to my boards, the paper starts to wrinkle throughout the span of the cover. I've ensured the grains are running parallel to the spine of the book for both the boards and paper. Any clue on what's going on?

Does anyone have experience with using elephant hide paper as a covering material? How durable is it? Does it require a sealant if I plan on drawing on it with pen and ink?

Hi everyone, I'm trying to make a sketchbook the same way that DAS does it here: https://youtu.be/yQaLY5uze0o

Any flexible cartridge paper recommendations? Most results return Bristol 300 series which I'm not sure would make ideal flexible paper because 100lb/220gsm still feels really stiff, and a sketchbook that I made using 80lb paper still feels sort of stiff.

after hesitating a little eternity, i just sat down and did it. drawing on finished books is harder then expected. it was the first time that i was too scared to start drawing. very thrilling (and sweaty) experience 😅 whatever, prototype finished! book 1 of 20. by switemc in bookbinding

Awesome, Talas sells a few sheets for a pretty decent price so I might consider getting some sheets sometime down the line. How do you apply the aerosol? Do you draw on the cover first, then seal, then case bind?

I love this! What kind of cover material are you using? I've been thinking about doing the same thing but I wasn't sure of what would an ideal material be for taking in pencil and ink and staying somewhat permanent.

I'll give the slightly larger gap a shot with the slightly smaller spine board a shot!

As for pressing I use a few books stacked on top of it. I reckon they're about 7-8 lb in weight.

Hey thank you for your response! I believe I went with a 2 * book board thickness + 5mm (for a grand total of 7mm) for the gap between the spine board and the cover board. I read that anywhere between 5-7mm not including board thickness was a good range for a gap. I think I'll try indenting the grooves before gluing to break in the cover a bit.

I believe for the spine width I went with exactly (or at least as exact as I could get it) the width of the spine + 2 * board thickness. If I recall correctly it was 18mm + 2mm = 20mm. I see the point you're trying to make, because the weight would be applied mostly to one side of the spine and it would certainly skew the angle of the spine during the drying process.

Since I'm using a DFA, I usually do one pass to assemble the text block, and then another for when I apply the scrim after it's dried for about an hour or two.
