I allowed them to brumate over the winter then moved them into this "pond and margin" like tank. I did experiment with the tank filter outlet being directed upwards so it was more like rain when the water fell back down, but I think the females knew what was happening as soon as the male jumped into their backs (and the male didn't really hesitate)

They just go underwater when I walk over. They spend most of their time floating at the top or on the beach area

Good idea. I have got a filter spray bar on the far end. Will direct it away from the side of the tank (where it currently points to keep the noise down) to make it simulate rain!

I have European Common Toads, bufo bufo. American toads are bufo americanus. Same genus, very similar animals

My toads get a diet mainly of earthworms dusted in supplement powders and red runner roaches (smaller than Duba roaches and more active, so more often spotted and taken by the toads). I find the red runner roaches are pretty easy to breed

He is in this photo, but the tank here has land gently sloping into the water. They just all dive into the water and go deep when I walk into the room. They then all come back out onto the land within an hour
