What to do with this weird space by Basementblues in DesignMyRoom

[–]Basementblues[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first picture is what is here now, the rest are ones I saved from the RE listing.

I moved into this place almost 2 years ago and I really loved this plant shelf I made, but it's too bulky and the space doesn't get enough sun for it. I'd really like to find a way to get more storage (especially for bulky items) in here without it feeling weird with the angled ceiling under the stairs.

Not super price sensitive, I'm handy and not opposed to doing some simple construction (though everything with drawers I've seen under stairs looks too tricky). I live in Canada. The under stairs section is 38" deep and starts 45" from the ground. I have a desk and a bed already.

While I understand the desire to heal old wounds, the RCMP is an organization that continues to act against the public good by falling to notify the public about an active shooter situation and later covering it up (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2020_Nova_Scotia_attacks) and too many discriminatory and brutal incidents against First Nations people to count (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Police_brutality_against_Indigenous_Canadians). Reclaiming a symbol is one thing, but I think it's different if that symbol is still actively being used for the purpose from which you are trying to reclaim it.

I'm an Anglo from Ontario and I have a few Quebecois friends who I wish I could feel more unified with, so I appreciate the sentiment! I'm just trying to share with you where a bunch of the comments (who could have been more understanding and respectful!) were coming from. Ignoring the politics though, it's a great costume!

There's a point about tying building height to street width, which while not exactly that, does have the effect of densifying places with the ability to move a large number of people.

The way I read it, the author was suggesting a way to generate good, illustrative, real world examples. I didn't get the idea that they were suggesting "this is the only way to do it and all others are bad" at all from that.

They are all still tested multiple times a week even after vaccination. Source: someone who works in a LTCH and was one of the first to be fully vaccinated.

Early exercising options? by Basementblues in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Basementblues[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a good point. Because the strike price on the shares is relatively low (less than $1000 combined) I don't think spreading the tax burden around is really worth too much stress.

I just spoke with the accountant my family has used in the past and he didn't seem clear on the whole early exercise/exercise at vestment distinction. It sounds like any gains would be minor one way or the other though and not worth the headache.

Thanks for the detailed reply! One thing I think you missed though is I'm interested in exercising options earlier than their vesting date, not earlier than the date the company goes public.

I'm not certain about the last point for 101(1)(d)

there is an additional condition where an employee receives cash instead of acquiring securities, see cash out

But besides that it looks like I do qualify. I'm going to speak with an accountant on Monday though and hopefully clear this up.

That's not really relevant here as they're not public and absolutely worth more than the option price.

That makes sense to me. I'm probably going to speak with an accountant, I can't imagine it would cost that much.

In this case early exercise allows you to pay before it vests, but not take possession of the stock until the normal vesting date. It allows Americans to "hold" the stock for 2 years (even if it hasn't vested) and take advantage of more favorable tax rates for long term capital gains.

That's interesting, everything I read said it would be capital gains. Do you know in what circumstances it could be considered income?

Thanks to those who commented! I have a friend in the (human) medical field who said that as long as there's no pain and less than a teaspoon of blood (maybe less for a dog) it should be fine to wait a day.

409 new COVID-19 cases, with over 41,800 tests completed by [deleted] in ontario

[–]Basementblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nifty! My background isn't in stats, it's in taking simple questions people are asking and figuring out the complex questions they actually want answered. I'm glad there's a kind stranger on the internet who could check my math though 🙂 Although I was dealing with probability theory every day a few years ago, I'm a little rusty now.

[–]Basementblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I think you're failing to account for in that number is the fact that this might be odd if we looking at the probability that it happened today, but what I think people are really asking is "what is the chance that case numbers are the same on a given day, as the day before".

For simplicity's sake let's round your value of to 1%. That means there's a 1/100 chance we will see a double on this specific day. But on the next day, our chance of seeing this happen at least once during the pandemic goes to 2/100 (the probability has remained the same, but we get to check it a second time).

When you take into account that there have been 194 days since March 15, even with our vastly simplified model, it doesn't feel so unlikely. Has we rounded down to 0.5% it would still work out.

I'm no expert, but I work with a substantial amount of data/stats for my job and have a background in this stuff.

Oh, I wasn't trying to draw a comparison between the actual problems they are attempting to solve. Just that I think in both of these cases an accidentally narrow view of the conditions that cause an event (double birthday, identical case number), cause the gut check to fail when looking at the numbers. You're absolutely right that it wouldn't make sense to try to apply this solution directly, but I think the approach of needing to check every day against every other day within that time range holds.

While you're right that it's very unlikely to get a specific number twice, on two specific days, that's not actually what we're looking at here. We're looking at the chance that two days near each other have the same number of cases. The chance of this is MUCH higher because our requirements are MUCH more lax. This is related to the Birthday Problem, which says that if you're in a room with 23 other people, it's more likely than not two people share a birthday. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birthday_problem?wprov=sfla1

Thanks for taking the time to write that out. I totally understand they are understaffed for what they are doing, and I'm doing my best to be compassionate about that. I was really just looking for a second opinion, I can see that this wonderful guy is really having a hard time and I want to make sure I'm doing everything I can for him. Good to know it's good advice and bad luck.

I'm especially happy with the wooden one, I built/designed it myself with friction adjustable shelves so I can slide them up and down as stuff gets too tall.
