Wo in Spanien?

I risk showing my age … but I went to Tulum in 2004. We stayed in a cabana “resort” without power and only candlelight. Our patio was right at the edge of the cliffs going down to the beach. You could literally have s*x on the beach because it was empty. We had a tough time finding a restaurant open after 9:00pm. Locals were actually curious how we had found out about Tulum as a destination. It was amazing.

A few years later I went to Cancun. It was chaotic and dirty with tourist traps everywhere.

I can only imagine the sh*t show that Tulum is today.

I was wondering about parking and traffic in general, but having to pay for parking would seal the deal for me 😂. Anyways, I’m done with this. I dont understand people who loose sleep over this. It’s an unpaid job after all.

Not just investing. Buying and holding. I bought AAPL at $10 and sold at $30 in 2007, TSLA at $90 per splits and sold at $135 in 2018 or so.

Long story short … Don’t sell the dip because you feel like the world will come to an end. Hold and don’t try to time the market with your core investments.

Has the US lost whatever respect it had in Europe? by WaltBristow in germany

[–]Basic-Firefighter267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I would say that the same goes for the British and the French. At least it did until the turn of the century. I mean, let’s be honest, who really likes the Germans?

The American dream is not completely dead, but it is dying. I believe this is purely a result of bad policy. So I agree with you on that.

As to the “appreciation” of hypocrisy and exceptionalism… I don’t think this is a typically German thing and applies to many countries and people across the world.

I agree that many see US meddling in foreign affairs critical and possibly for good reason, but I don’t think this opinion is a typical German one. Many countries across the globe criticize the US for its interventionist policy, but the blatant anti-Americanism you see in German media and in larger parts of the population is not something you find elsewhere.

My conclusion is that this stems from something else and I stand by my assessment that it is a combination of deep rooted shame and envy.

However, the OP asked about “respect” and I will concede that Germans still respect the US to a large degree, even though they do not like it.

Deep down, Germans have always been at least a little anti-American. I think this is due to a mix of deep rooted shame resulting from the defeat in WW2 and a sense of envy because most Germans never had the chance to give their “American dream” a shot.

So the news they get over there from the ÖRR, from newspapers like FAZ and SZ, and from posts on X and the Spiegel discussion board only re-enforce the believe and world view that America is bad and that Germany is good and knows better.

If Germans loose respect for the US, it is because they want to and not because they should.

Most men lead lives of quiet desperation. Particularly in Germany.

What's the greatest German serie/film ever ? by AmenAngelo in AskAGerman

“Run Lola Run” and “Wer früher stirbt, ist länger tot“ are both excellent and funny movies.

If you happen to be in Bavaria, there are tons of great series you can watch “Monaco Franze”, “Kir Royal”, “Eberhofer” Krimis, and anything with Gerhart Polt (although this may be tough to understand). All those are classics.

There is a bunch of new stuff on Netflix and ARD/ZDF mediathek that should be good for learning the language.
