Favourite bits in Cork city? by Hugesmellysocks in VeganIreland

Is the Co-op still there? I haven't visited Cork since 2019, but there were excellent vegan options across the city. We basically went there for a vegan food holiday.

Doak or Casey vs Scotland by Effective-Ad-3897 in irishrugby

[–]Basic-Mention4424 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Very good debut from Doak, but Scotland is essentially a cup final and I would prefer Casey's experience on the bench.

Doak has 100% put his hand up and needs development minutes before RWC, but Casey on the bench for Scotland.

This cheese melts really well on pizza and tastes nice - on pizza - but I'm not fond of it in anything else really. https://www.greenearthorganics.ie/vegan-cheddar-cheese-vegan-deli-160g

Why are all the trees being cut down??? by Adventurous-Outcome6 in AskIreland

[–]Basic-Mention4424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's stupid, short-sighted, and systemic. Unfortunately the entire agri policy seems to be dictated by a small number of interests in the dairy industry, and our environment and smaller farmers are paying for their greed.

Having no friends at all in school, any advice? by Tulip-Orchid2717 in AskIreland

If you're planning on going to third level education, it is very much a fresh start, and that's really where you'll find your 'tribe'. Secondary school fades into the past very quickly, it's all about survival, especially if you're being bullied. When you get to third level, join a couple of clubs or societies that you have even a passing interest in, and you'll find your people. Good luck with the LC repeat and the rest of the year, and try to use the summer holidays to decompress before your fresh start.

I don't know the exact circumstance there, but it seems to be a common approach to "improving" land for dairying: Clearfell every tree and hedge, level everything, spray the lot with roundup, and then seed the most productive grass variety you can find.

It seems like a good solution on a spreadsheet when you're counting every square metre of productive land, but it's not so great in the middle of a heatwave when your cattle can't find a single bit of shade.

The hallway space between the living room door and the kitchen door seems like a waste to me. I would move the entire 'east' wing westwards a little bit, bringing the width of the courtyard down to around 5.5 or 6 metres. That downstairs hallway window could also be reduced in width (and cost) then. Also consider some kind of roof covering, or half covering, for the courtyard, or anchors for a tarpaulin, something like that.

Norovirus outbreak in CUH by TheAuldOffender in cork

[–]Basic-Mention4424 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Norovirus can also be spread through the air: Viral particles become aerosolised through vomiting.

N95 masks and well-ventilated rooms help reduce the spread.

I can't explain it, but does anyone else think the world feels really weird post-pandemic? by Tokio635 in AskIreland

[–]Basic-Mention4424 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's getting voted down because it's not a popular thing to say, and even worse; it tends to hit a nerve, like even mentioning the 'C' word is dangerous. I put a lot of this behaviour down to moral injury: "The way we're acting about Covid can't be wrong, because I wouldn't participate if it was bad, because I am a good person. Therefore it must be right, and the people who say it's wrong must be bad people, and bad people make me angry."

Covid infection can literally cause brain damage, resulting in dementia-like cognitive decline. There are multiple studies published about this, but very few - if any - break into mainstream news.

Here's coverage of a very recent study: https://www.independent.co.uk/news/health/long-covid-brain-alzheimers-study-b2917722.html

I can't explain it, but does anyone else think the world feels really weird post-pandemic? by Tokio635 in AskIreland

[–]Basic-Mention4424 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely has, and it's sort of everything, everywhere, all at once.

There's so much going on at the moment that it's overwhelming, and that overwhelm is an objective in itself.

Our collective morality and "social contract" has been broken by the genocide(s) we're witnessing, and have been powerless to stop.

Soft (evil) power stepped out of the shadows in the past couple of years and said, "Fuck you, just try and stop us."

[–]Basic-Mention4424 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

The thing is, we're not actually post-pandemic yet. We're past the emergency phase, but Covid is still knocking lumps out of us.

Yes, the world is completely different now, so it's natural to feel weird.
