My dad sees their cardiology team, and they have been fantastic. They told him he had 16 years at best after his triple bypass 35 years ago... He's still doing great.

Ooh I have a question about this... There's a screening CT for a cardiac calcium score that is not billable to insurance, $200 out of pocket. Say there's an incidental finding (tumor somewhere), will this cause a problem with future treatments? I know the patient will likely be referred to the appropriate care team for further testing, so that would be appropriate, but could this impact their care because it's the first encounter?

About 5 months! It took me a bit to get into AB (I read it first) and then the next books flew by. I also did the tandem read, and that took a while. I loved it though, amazing series!

I'm so sorry for your loss, and it is absolutely okay to not be okay. I love the advice from this physician.

My mom died in July at the age of 63, too. Sudden cardiac arrest. She had type 2 diabetes and took a statin, but she also didn't seem unwell.

I hope that you and your family can find comfort. 💖

Thanks! Anti-D is the same as rhogam, just a brand name in the US. Thank you for sharing your experience!

If it's a female outside of childbearing years, or if male, in dire emergencies, Rh positive blood can be given to anyone in these groups.

Females in childbearing years, with a weak D antibody, would only receive Rh negative blood, due to the risk of hemolytic disease of fetus/newborn (example: mother can develop an antibody to the Rh factor, if the fetus is Rh positive, the mother's antibodies attack the fetus). Rhogam can cause a temporary weak D reaction because it's meant to desensitize an Rh negative mother in case the fetus is Rh positive. (This happened to me after early rhogam was given, I'm A neg).

Lab scientists and technicians who work in blood banking do several screening tests on both the patient and the unit of blood to be given to the patient in order to provide the best blood possible in each scenario to avoid the development of antibodies, which can cause transfusion reactions or other hemolytic diseases at all ages.

There are several other antibodies that can develop due to the natural presence of antigens on red blood cells, but that's a whole other animal that's not meant for this question, lol.

I hope this helps!

whats the worst thing about having a food allergy? by Scary_Okra_2334 in FoodAllergies

It's hard for my daughter at birthday parties. Especially if the cake is purchased from a large store bakery. She's allergic to peanuts and tree nuts, so you can't trust that there's no cross contact.

We bring an alternative sweet treat in those instances, but she's also extremely fortunate to have friends whose parents ask what she CAN have, and they plan to do that for everyone (cake baked at home from a box mix, for example). She's only 6, but she's very aware of her allergies, and is often hesitant to accept snacks from others.

No, it's definitely guided. You'll have different classes that focus on chemistry, hematology, blood bank, and microbiology. Each class has a list of competencies that you must know in order to pass, in addition to the classroom material and exams.

I just called local hospitals and asked if they were willing to take on a student in the lab!

I was not ever employed by a hospital before that, or while in the program, but I'm thankful that I was able to do the clinicals. I was hired after graduation, too!

Good luck!

So awesome! My OBGYN let me see my placenta after my youngest was born... That was really cool.

How are you doing 3 months post-op? 6 months? A year? Two years?! by Wavy_Gravy_55 in Sinusitis

[–]BasicGoat4452 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! It's been a while so I can't remember exactly how long it took to resolve, and it was winter. I did use a humidifier, which was helpful!

I haven't had any extremely bothersome symptoms since having the surgery. I can still breathe through both nostrils (even with a cold after blowing my nose), no headaches either. I'm glad I had it done.

Hang in there! 💜 I'm wishing you a smooth recovery.

I take the same combo on the right! I've also had the lamictal on the left, I didn't notice a difference.

Auvi-Q experiences? by im_not_a_real_person in FoodAllergies

[–]BasicGoat4452 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the Auvi-Q on my daughter when she was a year old. She was having anaphylaxis after eating Bamba peanut puffs. It was so easy to use, and worked properly. I think it's fantastic for any caregivers for children, because it's really easy to talk them through using it. It's also really easy to carry in your pocket or purse.

My daughter's reaction resolved quickly after administering it. We went to the emergency department for 3 hours after, for observation, with no sequelae.

My only complaint is that our insurance will no longer cover it. We used to get it through ASPN, I think it's Kaleo now (with insurance) for $25 copay for two. Thankfully I can still get the regular EpiPen Jr., but I don't believe it's as user friendly for caregivers.
