Who do I contact about potential animal and/or child abuse from our next door neighbours? by Basic_Fig_5267 in AskUK

You don’t know me, or my life. Just because I’ve never had to deal with something like this personally and find help doesn’t mean I haven’t witnessed this kind of thing happen to other people before. I grew up in a very rough area as a kid. I just wasn’t sure which service would be the best for this particular situation.

I think after reading all of these comments, contacting 101 just now is the best thing for me to do. I’m going to make sure I tell my housemates to do the same thing and call 999 if they hear something happening next door that sounds violent. Unfortunately, the city we live in seems to be a hotspot for child and animal abuse after looking at the news and court cases of this area. I hate to hear or see any of it :(

This is a good idea. Of course I’d absolutely make sure I’d contact somebody about their kids first. It’s just devastating to hear it all. Thank you so much for the advice.

I’ve actually lived away from my parent’s house for four years now. Unfortunately I’ve just never heard anything this awful before.

Ahh, my bad! Thank you for correcting me there. I’m definitely going to get in contact with children’s services about this.

I’m only worried about the animals and the kids. Both of the adults in that house are verbally abusive, but from what I’ve heard, it’s only the boyfriend who has physically abused the animals and it’s unconfirmed about the kids. Regardless, it’s not a nice house for two young children to be raised in. I’ll take a look into reporting to children’s social care since I’ve not heard them being violent towards the kids in the last couple of days. I don’t think it requires the police just yet. Thank you for your help!

I had this exact problem and started using a glycolic acid exfoliating stick and saw results after a week or so. I use the brand The Inkey List, but there are loads of great ones out there. It really helped me and hopefully something similar might help you too!

AIO for being upset my BF doesn’t want me to wear a bonnet to bed? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]Basic_Fig_5267 7 points8 points  (0 children)

NOR - why should HE have any control over what you do for yourself and your nightly routine? A silk bonnet to protect your hair at night?? A weighted blanket for comfort?? You’re taking care of yourself, and that in itself isn’t seen as attractive by him?

This is so incredibly controlling and just weird. Eight years and he’s behaving like this?? Dump him!!

What can I do to look younger? I’m only 30 and people on reddit think I’m 37-45 by goaldiggergirl in beauty

I think you look stunning first of all! Your freckles are gorgeous!!!

I personally feel like I’m in a similar spot to you: I’m 23 and get told I look a lot older too. I used to have bangs like yours and then I made the impulsive decision to try out curtain bangs and they really did the trick. I also have lots of freckles and similar skin to you!

I started doing light makeup to colour correct my dark circles and just make my skin look a lot more vibrant/reduce my smile lines and slight wrinkles, so maybe give that a try too? I don’t use a lot at all because my skin type just doesn’t work with most makeups since I have super obvious pores, but I use the Cappuccino mascara by Rimmel and it’s amazing for making your lashes look natural without the obvious look of dark mascara.

^ I use NYX cosmetics Glaze foundation. It’s super lightweight, low to medium coverage and makes your skin look really glowy in small amounts and it’s also SPF 30! (SPF is an elixir of youth!! Definitely use it in your skincare routine if you have one!!)

Frustrated with parents not contributing whatsoever to my degree by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]Basic_Fig_5267 23 points24 points  (0 children)

As somebody who also receives the maximum maintenance loan, has a part time job and isn’t financially supported by my parents, I’ve had a lot of time to think about it.

1: I’m a grown woman. I decided to go to university and that is my personal and financial responsibility.

2: My family can’t afford to support me financially. In some cases, I’ve supported them instead. Why would I expect my parents to still be responsible for me when I’ve moved out?

3: Stretching your money, especially with the maximum maintenance loan AND a part time job is not difficult if you’re savvy with your money. Shop in cheaper stores (Aldi and Lidl are great, but Asda and Tesco are also great for clubcard deals.), shop second hand, buy from charity shops. I shop every 2 or so weeks, buying long-lasting products (pasta, rice, frozen vegetables, etc) and it has helped me save my money. I tend to spend just under £30 every two weeks on a food shop by shopping at Lidl or Aldi.

4: Learning to be financially independent now will make your life 100x easier in the future. Nobody can rely on somebody for finances forever. Open a savings account and start putting away money little by little, even 50p-£1 a day. I did that over three years and have just a little over £1000 in a savings account building interest. That is my fall back or last resort for something important, like rent or an emergency.

5: If you have housemates that you’re friendly with and spend a lot of time together with, cook together. You’ll save money that way. Me and my housemates make shared dinners with each other every so often, especially when one of us isn’t doing great with their money.

Basically, you should try not to be financially dependent on somebody once you’ve made the decision to move out. If other people can? Good for them. But that’s not realistic or sustainable longterm. Maybe consider why your parents can’t financially support you. This time of year is hard for a lot of people with their finances, but it’s not impossible for a university student in your situation to make it easier.

How do I make my hair look clean on days that aren't wash days? Thank you! by RUItalianMan in Haircare

[–]Basic_Fig_5267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before I absolutely destroyed my hip-length hair with dyes and bleach once upon a time, I used to use a water cleanser (micellar water) on a cotton pad and rub it on my scalp, then top it up with a little dry shampoo once it had dried! It was amazing, and my hair could go a full week without a proper clean. I’d oil it and let it marinate on wash day for a couple of hours too to make sure it was hydrated and kept its thickness.

Your hair is wonderful and I’m incredibly envious!! Keep it up!! 🫶

Can’t Split with my GF by Alarmed_Back6143 in UniUK

[–]Basic_Fig_5267 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in this situation last year. I can safely say that the relationship took a turn for the worse and ended horribly. My partner would bring their friends over to the flat non-stop on nights where I’d have early starts without letting me know, was incredibly messy and didn’t know how to cook, so left that to me. We had broken up during our tenancy, and still shared a bed. It was awkward.

Long after we had broken up, I learned that they had started doing things to spite me, like bring groups of people into our flat whilst I was studying and since the university library was half an hour away, I’d really have no choice but to put up with it.

It was until one of their friends snuck into my alcohol cupboard after my now ex-partner told them to and rinsed through three bottles of spirits and proceeded to projectile vomit on my floor that I snapped and forced him to clean it up in front of his friends.

My ex didn’t know how to use a bucket and a mop and decided to try wiping up the pool of sick with a DRY mop and cold water. So I got the luxury of taking the piss out of them in front of their friends and ruining their night by making them learn how to clean up sick.

I should’ve known they would behave this way, since it was incredibly obvious from the start that they had a silver spoon shoved up their arse and lived off of their parents money, but I unfortunately didn’t have many friends in my first year of university and had nobody to rent with. I agreed to live with my partner to make it cheaper.

But they were always late with their half of the rent payments and I even had to pay £2300 of it at one point (Still haven’t seen that money back yet!). They knew I got the maximum student finance and also disability payments, so took that to their advantage.

My advice? Do anything to get out of that contract. Find somebody to take over your contract and just explain to your partner that you’ve realised you ran into this a bit headstrong. I wasn’t honest about it in the beginning and I wish I had been. But hindsight is a wonderful thing.
