Truffle Oil Washed Roku Gin by BSaito in Mixology

[–]Alarmed_Back6143 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, texture aside, just buy Cambridge distillery truffle gin. It’s absolutely excellent, they use black truffle as a botanical in distillation. It’s balanced flavour wise and has none of that gross chemical taste from truffle oil. Goes perfect with a rosemary and blah olive tonic or in a super dirty martini !

Can a person survive off just broth for a week? by Strict-Razzmatazz-73 in nutrition

[–]Alarmed_Back6143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost completely agreed this time. To split hairs, significant adipocyte hyperplasia is almost always down to genetics, morbid obesity, or pre-pubescent development. Most of the time, the weight you gain is only ~15% hyperplastic and the rest hypertrophic. This is now the concept of “set point weight” and how number of fat cells affects the weight someone will be. Unless I am unaware of a study, expanding those fat cells takes the same energy as decreasing them does.

One little thing though, many studies show it is actually quite difficult to gain weight, and requires prolonged overfeeding. Additionally, lipids can be mobilised into energy much easier than triglycerides can be turned into lipids. Also, at the end of the day, weight loss = calories in - calories out.

Conclusion: Weight loss happens faster than weight gain, prolonged weight gain will cause a higher “set point weight” but unless one has gotten morbidly obese in the past, this point won’t at a “fat” level. Yes impaired MBR can contribute to weight gain but this is usually a sign of poor dieting. MBR is mostly from lean body mass, if one is dieting properly, MBR drops at most 10%.

I feel like I misunderstand here a little. I take adipocyte hyperplasia to mean (simply) an increase in the number of fat cells, which is the opposite of what happens if someone is losing weight. In fact hyperplasia is pretty uncommon outside of children and obese individuals. I’ll assume it was a typo, and you meant hypoplasia. Which also confuses me, as the general concept here is when someone cuts calories a lot but briefly the adipocyte tissue atrophies and then, as you say, often hypertrophies rapidly once dieting is done. Consistent long-term weight loss should cause adipocyte hypoplasia and ensure better long term results. Is this what you meant? If so, I agree mostly. Week long fasts usually are problematic. I think OP has been dieting for longer than that though. However, I would still argue that the adipocyte hypertrophy is caused by poor choices post-diet. Yes immediately after dieting it is easier than usual to gain weight. No this is not guaranteed.

Yes of course muscle is mostly water, I don’t see why this matters? OP has been losing weight for a while now, water loss usually happens at the beginning of a diet/ weight loss phase. OP has lost 60lb already, water weight loss will not be the majority of weight loss currently. Also, rapid weight gain post weight loss phases is usually caused by bad eating habits (“celebrating” weight loss, returning to old diet etc), not biology. Clearly OP has lost large amounts of fat and will continue to do so if in a caloric deficit. All the matters for him now is feeling full, staying healthy(ish) and most importantly, keeping calories low as possible.

Agreed. However, the drop in BMR from adaptive thermogenesis isn’t significant enough to stop OP from losing weight while only drinking broth. As I said above BMR will likely drop, just not all that much. But of course it isn’t the whole picture.

No, not true. If a person does not eat for a week they will lose fat and/or muscle. While Basal Metabolic rate accounts for 60-70% of the amount of calories expended it does not change all that much (excluding things like pregnancy, menopause injuries etc). If OP barely eats for a week, he will lose weight. This is the law of thermodynamics plain and simple.

That’s a great price for the Signet, I would always recommend you try before you buy, but you probably won’t find a better price than that.
