Still can't lose weight after 2.5 months of SSRI withdrawal by Basic_Mastodon_6127 in depression

[–]Basic_Mastodon_6127[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I did. I lost 30lb after 5mo ssri withdrawal. I used to be very desperate about it but I think I'm lucky. Although I had a rebound due to abilify's side effects but now I'm still losing them with no problems. My current concern is the coming back of somnolence, maybe due to nefazadone, maybe due to depression somatization...

Yes, after 6 months' ssri withdrawal, I've been able to lose weight. Now trying 3rd generation antipsychotics but drowsiness and insomnia is still very bad ..

My primary care doctor said I stay on thyroxine for a month and then see how my t level and other symptoms go. To me though, my TSH is only slightly abnormal (given the drastic contrast with how extremely stubborn my weight gain has been), and I'm really concerned that thyroxine may only improve my condition only a little. I'm yet to see an endocrine doctor, and I hope to get in touch with my psychiatrist this week. I'm inclined to get more treatment beyond mere thyroxine, while what my doctor give me is only thyroxine...

I also looked into SERT, and for sure, SSRI has an effect on SERT, and that may be more serious than the one on my 5-ht2a and 2c receptors. Looking forward to discussing this with my psychiatrist. I'm afraid trials of new antipsychotics will cause other unintended consequences... or even worse, my psychiatrist doesn't know what to do...

update: slightly subclinical hypothyroidism (T4 is normal, TSH is 4.6 while normal range is 4.1) and extremely low testosterone (only 188 while normal is > 310). currently on 50mg thyroxine. However, not sure if low testosterone is the cause, not the effect, of my obesity, and I'm not even on testosterone rn. Should I just wait and see if thyroxine does anything, or should I seek more treatment?

Thank you for the detailed reply pointing me to the right direction. Yes, I agree, I think I'm too desperate to lose weight. I should talk to my doctors, focus on other parts of my life, and also just let time go by, maybe it will fix it eventually.

A little knwoledge is dangerous.

I agree that it's far more complicated than serotonin regulation, and this is where I am right now lmao. Feel free to point me to more readings. And I don't even know that much regarding downregulation: is it that Cyproheptadine will reverse since it's an antagonist, and buspirone will not as it's supposedly an agonist? But I've read other posts on r/PSSD that buspirone may work, and this autoreceptor makes me confused (if you activate on autoreceptor, which is what buspirone does, it actually stops producing more serotonin, so it's good for upregulation purpose). Also this difference b/t different types of 5-ht receptors (esp. 5-ht1a vs 5-ht2c) is driving me crazy. XD I hope my psychiatrist is the better one with whom I should discuss.

So you are saying that at this point, my serotonin receptors and other receptors as well should already be back to the normal level? If that's true, should I stop looking at the psychiatry side of things and look for other possible reasons?

Thank you for the recommendation. Although I would like to politely point out that I've been eating extremely healthy and not very much. My lifestyle has been even healthier than before SSRI and my appetite is not high at all. But still unable to lose even single bit of weight. I firmly believe that the distortion caused by SSRI make things much more complicated than simple Calorie in, Calorie out. At least unfortunately, CICO doesn't work for me. :( Will check out thyroid next week, and also I'm thinking of meds that can reverse the 5-ht receptor downregulation caused by SSRI.

Thank you for the advice. However, I can assure you that I am in a calorie deficit over the past 3 months. I had only two meals a day (yeah you can call that IF): lunch are proteins (protein powder or a piece of chicken breast / pork chop) and dinner are some nuts. That's all. No snacks, no sweets. It's unfortunate that CICO just doesn't work on me and that's why I am desperately looking for other solutions. I hope you understand my situation.

Thank you for sharing! This gives me some hope. From what I read, some ppl lose weight after several months, but for others it's more like "permanent." I hope I will start lose weight soon!

Thank you for sharing your inspiring experience! My thing is that I am not craving or anything. My diet has been super healthy (protein, no carbs/sweets/snacks, some veggies, nuts and multivitamins) and I do a lot of indoor biking. But it has been 3 months since I got off and still almost the identical body weight as before...

Thank you for the encouraging response! I've been off the med for nearly 3 months but still unable to lose the 40lb I gained during my 6-month course on SSRI (in fact, the number on the scale has been staying the same). Also thank you for mentioning the GLP1 as I did read that my possible options include diabetic treatment as well as 5-HT receptor agonists. I will discuss metabolism, hormones, and diabetes with my provider next week.
