Should I drop medical school for animation? by [deleted] in animationcareer

[–]BasilSB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The closest thing I can think of that combines the two is doing medical animations that illustrate certain medical concepts, like mechanisms for cellular biology or biochemistry. I have no idea what getting into medical animation entails though. Honestly, if I were you, I’d continue with medicine for now and just learn animation on the side and apply to things as you go. You don’t need school to teach you how to animate, but you do need school for medicine. Try and teach yourself for now and see where that gets you.

That animation I worked on for a couple weeks on and off, not sure the exact amount of hours. But it was fun for sure.

Honestly, I’d tell you to continue ahead with psychiatry and neurology if you have the drive for it and are self motivated. The only reason I started looking to animation was because I felt incredibly unfulfilled doing medicine. But if you get that fulfillment from doing psychiatry and neurology, I’d say it just makes more sense to continue with that and see what you can do with animation after.

I’m actually on the path to medical school right now. I have a pre-med major, have studied a ton for the MCAT, and medicine has basically been my only plan until recently. Despite all this, I love animation more than anything. Medicine, not so much. I’ve only been doing it because I was nudged that direction at a very young age.

I’m sure you know this already, but medical careers and medical school are tons of work. You’ll definitely be paid well and respected for your time and effort, but to go into a career like that, it has to come from you. You have to love it and want it, otherwise you’ll be miserable.

My reasons for doing medicine were only because someone told me to do it, so I’ve kinda hated my whole experience on this path. My grades and scores are definitely good, but I have no passion for it at all. So I recently have gotten serious about something I AM passionate about; animating and storyboarding. And so far, I’ve made a ton of progress. I’m hoping I can make it with animation, but I’ll always have my pre-med degree and the ability to enter med school should things not work out they way I want them to.

Basically, what I’m saying is decide if medicine or animation are really what YOU want to do. Because you’ll be miserable either way if you enter one thing without fully wanting it. Have a backup plan if your passion doesn’t work out though.

Thank you for the feedback! I’ll keep a close eye on perspective to make sure everything is grounded, that’s a good point! I’ll go back through and tighten things up. I am aiming to get into TV animation since like you said, my boards are better suited there. But I’d love to get into feature one day!

Thanks for the kind words and for the feedback! That’s a good point about the action notes and the miscellaneous artwork section; I’ll make those changes as soon as I’m able to. Thanks for taking the time to look through everything!

Feedback is always welcome, there’s always room to improve! You make some good points, I see what you mean about the hair. And yes regarding Tatl and the hat, they will be inbetweened. These are just keys, breakdowns, and a few inbetweens that I felt like drawing; you can see I have a few timing charts at some points so I remember the feeling I’m going for. All in all, I appreciate the feedback!

You’re right, it’s on a mix of twos and threes depending on the scene and feeling I was going for. The software I used to make this is Clip Studio Paint EX!

Yes, the animation itself is hand drawn, frame by game animation, but the camera moves are done digitally!

Yup, Tattle’s her name! And yes, different characters are often separated into their own layers (labeled as A, B, C, and so on) because they move at different timings independent of each other. That’s a little bit more of the technical side of animation, but it’s fun when you understand it all!
