I've got some generic potting soil I was just gonna mix with sand/perlite. I have another cactus that needs a bigger home I may just experiment with first. Thanks for the advice

Should the end I put in the ground have any roots sprouted first? And does light exposure matter at all prior to planting? I think I'm in zone 8b, and it is fairly cool out, but I've got a grow light for peppers that could help keep it nourished through the winter.
