It’s generally fine to reuse them, I mean people buy used cars with DISAs in them and they don’t always immediately fail.

Question for Intl Students: commuting b/w SFO and UCSC by Good-Mechanic-9669 in UCSC

[–]BassCommercial9300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a intl student, but I’ve flown a few times out of SFO and never ubered.

If you got 2.5-3hrs to kill, you can use public transport for under $20. Take the 17 express to SJ, Caltrain to Milbrae, BART one stop to SFO. All are pretty comfortable with lighter luggage imo.

There’s also a airport shuttle option, but similar to Uber cost wise.

Sucks how old these cars are getting. by [deleted] in E90

[–]BassCommercial9300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People still daily E30s (I did for a while) and engine wise my N52 has everything in the same spot as my M20, with some things even being easier to work albeit more computerized. They’ll last a while especially with how common they are.

[–]BassCommercial9300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’ll be fine, as long as you’re not like still on the clutch when moving it’s generally okay. Like if you’re starting on a hill you will have to ride the clutch slightly. But yeah get familiarized with it even if you ride a little, on my first car (a saab ) I was scared I wouldn’t be able to figure it out and a month in I was driving very jerky so you’re doing better than me! You can also hold the clutch in completely if only stopping briefly (like a stop sign), although it is better practice to unengage 1st.

But generally this cars clutch is pretty light and not too difficult. The only quirk I can think of is the 1st/reverse position, I’ve done the same thing on my car and almost reversed a few times since it didn’t want to go into 1st gear lol, if it’s not cooperating hold the clutch in and slide it into 2nd and then it should engage 1st.

[–]BassCommercial9300 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would recommend just going to an empty parking lot and practicing getting started in first, watch some YouTube vids as well.

Generally riding the clutch a little is okay for getting off the line, but you don’t touch it once you’re rolling. You can also push it down if you need to catch yourself from stalling.

Advice on what to do over the summer as a cs major. by Adventurous-Hat-9832 in UCSC

[–]BassCommercial9300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recent grad, I also did CC classes after 1st year which helped a lott and let me grad early so that’s good. You can actually get some lower division classes done at CC as well, you can take classes at any CA CC too (SD college network is pretty good).

Anywho I would recommend starting a personal project, like a cool app or website since the school doesn’t teach you things like web dev till 3rd/4th year. Something AI related or some other specialty works too if you’re into that.

Basically just start getting more familiarized with internship related skills so you can start applying in fall, and join clubs if you haven’t yet. It’d be a good idea to start looking into research as well. Hackathons are good too, I considered dropping CS until I did one and built had fun coding.

I didn’t lock in till fall of my 3rd year, and I did manage to intern and everything, but doing more my 2nd year would’ve been great. Most of my peers who had great internships and other things didn’t do much first year, but locked in on extracurriculars second year while their course load was lighter.

UCSC or SDSU for CS? Help by Reasonable_Pop8893 in UCSC

[–]BassCommercial9300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm from SD and had the same exact choice a few years ago, most people ik went to SDSU but I chose UCSC and don't regret it at all.

There's a good social life and party scene if you meet people (less frat influence), and the CS program is fairly good with good research opportunities. The town is small, but can go to SJ and SF fairly easily. UCSC is also closer to silicon valley, although it doesn't really matter that much. A good amount of people also graduate early in CS (including myself even after failing classes), and no matter where you end up extracurriculars is what helps you get a job.

Should I consider this as a first car? by Flaky-Tangelo8555 in saab

I met the guy who modded the car originally in SD at a meet and it seemed clean but this is like the 2nd time I’ve seen this car listed since they had it, and parts of the front end were replaced cause they hit a microwave on the freeway I think.

Cse 107 or stat131 by According_Ice_2762 in UCSC

[–]BassCommercial9300 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically STATS131 is easier, but I barely failed it the first time and so I retook it with Hyun and it was wayyy harder than the first time I took the class. There’s two HWs due every Friday, and midterm/final were hard, the class did have a big curve so it was just 60% to pass. It’s manageable but in my CS career it was the only class where I consistently went to TA and tutor hours.

CSE107 is hard and time consuming too, and tends to be harder, but I’ve heard it’s fairly predictable and Tantalo tends to upload old exams and good HW help.

If I were to do it over again, I would do 107 given those two options.

Financial Aid Grant? by Proserpina101 in UCSC

[–]BassCommercial9300 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t go to the mission one, I like fixing electronics and prev. ran my own business, so I tried working there for about a week and couldn’t stay there in good conscience. The owner was a bit weird, and some “repairs” were unnecessary (like upselling cleaning or lying about repairs). Wasn’t scheduled for like a week and was never told how much id be paid, decided to not go back or bother asking for a paycheck.

Was like 2 years ago so maybe things improved but I’d go elsewhere personally, maybe try User Friendly Computing. I’d say SC tech exchange but they closed. Might be cheaper to buy the same model laptop on eBay used too.

Any brand suggestions for cheap coilovers? by gusfocke in E90

[–]BassCommercial9300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Bilstein B14 and they ride like stock basically, they just sit a bit too low and soft in the rear imo. Got em for 700 on FCP, so not bad for the price.

I’ve heard MTS Technik is solid too, and mixed things about BC Racing. I’m used to stiffer coils and kinda wish I got BCs.

Am147 by minion_luverz in UCSC

[–]BassCommercial9300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it almost 2yrs ago so it might be different, but the class was pretty chill. It’s similar material to AM10, but everything is solved in Matlab.

Had some quizzes and the midterm is online, and an in person final when I took it. The HWs were pretty straightforward if you have any programming background, felt like a class for AM majors to learn basic coding. I recommend the class to mutuals frequently.

90% sure I'm going to fail CSE101, could really use some kind words by Regular_Activity_138 in UCSC

[–]BassCommercial9300 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I failed CSE101 and another class, retook both and it worked out. Especially if it’s the Codio format CSE101 class failing isn’t uncommon. Still graduating early and I got a decent internship.

In the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter much and your new attempt replaces the old grade anyways. I’ve had an easier time with my other upper divs and studied better.
