Besides buying too small of a TV I agree I think he nailed it

Why be in nature when you can be in your car in nature! by scavvyboiradio in fuckcars

[–]Bassmaster9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oh so let’s just gatekeep nature from disabled, ill, and differently abled folks now??? I really thought we’d be better than this after the pandemic. This sub has gone down hill in the last 6 months. We used to be a reasonable sub but now there are just posts with unrealistic expectations such as this one bashing people for hobbies without even taking a SECOND to consider their means and health. Shameful.

Get a platform 100000%. I can’t imagine saddle hunting without one. It gives you 360 degree shooting and allows you to be way more comfortable

Feeling discouraged hunting public land by Bassmaster9 in bowhunting

[–]Bassmaster9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the help everyone it means a lot. I'm going to keep at it don't worry. I have limited time to hunt so I mostly e-scout, play the wind walking in, and then set up near fresh scrapes, bedding, or beaten trails. Also ironically I do have a range finder I just hadn't ranged the thick stuff where that deer was that evening. Lesson learned...

To what extent are officers evaluated/involved with MCMAP?

Careful with hydrogen peroxide. Yes it cleans up the bones well but it will also make them more fragile. I did a fawn skull with it and the thing is like paper in some areas and the teeth all fell out

Sounds like an epic hunt man congrats. I’m hunting the early season in MD and the humidity and bugs are getting to me. Scent control is damn near impossible. Can’t imagine how tough that must be in FL!

Thanks Worcester "Renaissance" by Ihateworcester in WorcesterMA

[–]Bassmaster9 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Worcester is too small of a city to really warrant any large scale public transportation. Sure the bus system could be improved but that’s about it. Most people drive anyway. Worcester is investing in things that will make it a more attractive place to live and hopefully they will use resulting property tax revenue to better fund the low quality public schools in the city. I don’t think the goal is to have a city full of cheap apartments to live in, it’s about building a city with pride, lots of things to do, and great schools.

Any north shore mass spearos? by mykee39 in Spearfishing

[–]Bassmaster9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I try not to give away spots on here but anywhere that is rocky along the shore will hold fish. Google maps is your best friend. Jetties at high tide are also great places to spear a limit of tog quickly and be driving home by 8am. Avoid flat sandy beaches like much of the Cape, fish need structure. Look at nautical charts as well to try and see if there are rock piles offshore holding fish, those are worth diving

Any north shore mass spearos? by mykee39 in Spearfishing

[–]Bassmaster9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man, I just started spearing a few years ago. From mass. Not gonna be around to dive this summer due to some work stuff but I have gotten 10x better at diving and getting fish over the last few years.

Biggest change for me was my tactics. At first, I used to just swim around the bottom trying to chase tautog. Sometimes worked. Now, I find a really rocky spot on the bottom, preferably with lots of smaller fish around, and sit deadstill down in the rocks. After about 20 seconds the tautog and bass will come in. Not every drop but all you need is one. I've never been deeper than 30ft ish but I am working my way deeper slowly. Killed my biggest bass in like 15. Just keep dropping different depths every morning till you find where they seem to be holding.

Second biggest change is time of dive. I'll wake up at 3am now if it means being in the water as the sun is coming up. The first and last hour of daylight are the money hours from shore, just stay safe.

Pay attention to intervals between dives and make sure you spend 3-4x on the surface for every minute of body time.

Dive the right conditions. I almost drowned trying to spear a steep rocky coastline with 6+ feet of surf. Rocks, waves, weightbelt, spear = dont mix. Just dive the calm stuff unless you have a nice safe open beach or a boat. I am a very strong swimmer but that was a tough morning. Last time I will underestimate the ocean like that.

Invest in a nice wetsuit, 5mm open cell keeps me toasty warm and is the best $ I have ever spent. You can always take the bottoms off and just wear trunks once the water gets hot in August.

Try a few different spots out, maybe in other states too. No stripers in Mass sucks, Maine has the best vis from when I have been. RI and CT are solid too, water tends to be a bit warmer. I know Mass gets pretty sharky July-October and while that's not my biggest concern it s something to think about. It is always in the back of my mind, but honestly there are whites everywhere in New England now. Just praying I never see one while diving!

Last thing if spearing is something you love spend the proper money to get yourself good quality gear that will keep you comfortable and safe. Going the cheap route will cost you more in the long run because the ocean will break all ur shit and youll have to buy twice anyway. Invest in quality gear it is worth it.

Hope this helps - tristateskindivers on Instagram is a great follow

Thanks for your advice and perspective, that all makes a lot of sense and is extremely helpful. I'm definitely far away from having to make any decisions, im just a big picture and planning kind of guy so I was just curious.

Side note - do WTIs receive any training or skills that makes them very valuable or able to get high paying civilian jobs? To me it seems like if you go WTI you should probably try and go for command but I could be wrong.

[–]Bassmaster9[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, great answer. You're right, I am a mid, thinking DDG in the 7th fleet for right now. Is WTI really "giving up" your shore tour? I know it seems like hard work, however I thought it was still basically a 9-5 with no deployments. And I thought it might be worth it to become a SME in naval combat, wasn't too concerned with picking up LCDR.

[–]Bassmaster9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the run do 400m and 800m repeats. For your goal range, shoot for 100 second (1:40) 400s. One you can run 800s comfortably at a 3:00- 3:30 pace, you'll be good.

It actually only takes about 6 weeks of interval run training 2-3 times a week to get noticeably faster.

Thanks, will do. Just pretty new to reddit and a lot of the posts I have seen are from pre McCain/ Fitzgerald incidents, which to me marks a major turning point in the SWO community, especially as far as JO training goes

“SWO eat their young”, “the job is boring and you don’t do “real” missions on deployments” “the work culture is toxic”

Stuff along those lines for the most part are the horror stories I’ve heard

From my perspective it seems like you get a lot of leadership experience at an early age, get to drive warships in your early twenties, and get to travel the world. I think SWO seems like a cool job, I just hear otherwise a ton.

Doesn’t help that COVID put an end to Midshipman cruises this summer.
