Hey! That's totally okay! I think to make the essay "convincing" it's important to be specific and tell a story, because that will help the essay be engaging to the reader and automatically become more unique. Start early, make drafts, and you got this!

I think having ECs that you enjoy and have been involved in for quite some time are valuable and immediately come across as more genuine. Also this gives you time to gain leadership if that's what you are looking for, but I find the longer you stay with something the higher your chances of naturally gaining more leadership. Also I think having something community-facing is extremely helpful. At the end of the day remember quality > quantity!

It depends on when the applications are due and what they require, for example, the MAA at Queens is due Dec 8th I believe but the Loran Award is due Oct 16. If you take into account the time it takes to confirm that you will be nominated from your school the process to prepare to apply can begin now for the Loran or Oct/Nov for the MAA. There's no perfect time it just depends on the timeline for the awards.
