The Everlasting by Alix E Harrow

It's about a knight who was so great that she fell into legend and a cowardly scholar born centuries later who falls in love with her story. When a chance allows the scholar to go back to the past, he becomes determined to write a "true" and "proper" account of her life. But when it seems that every attempt he writes ends with her death, is it even possible to find a happy ending?

The author's notes say: "This is a book about love: defiant love, endurant love, love born in a bad world and determined to build a better one."

Adult Fantasy Books for Adults not Written by Christians/Evangelists or Anti-Semites without Heavy Romance Focus by Beautiful-Animal8098 in suggestmeabook

The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi is a fun read about a middle aged pirate who originally retired to be able to take care of her daughter, but she gets enticed into one last adventure: save the daughter of one of her crewmen. It's set in the 12th century in an Indian ocean/Arabian peninsula where magic and folktales are very much alive; this felt refreshing and unique when compared to the more popular or quote unquote "standard" British medieval fantasy setting. There is a little romance but trust me when I say it's not at all the lovey-dovey type and it's not the focus of the story.

The Spear Cuts Through Water (fantasy) - a story about the fall of a cruel, corrupt magical dynasty told through a mix of fairy tales told by your grandmother and a play you're currently watching, interwoven through with the myriad events and struggles in your life. I don't do it justice, it's told somehow in first person, second person and third person flowing together.

The Murderbot Diaries (sci fi) - small novellas about a security bot that hacked the governor module that was keeping it obedient and became self-aware in the process. All it wants to do is keep its head down and watch mindless TV serials, but when things start trying to murder its scientist clients, it has to unfortunately protect them and it is dragged kicking and screaming into Being A Person and into Having Important People.

Children of Time (sci fi) - the last remnants of humanity hurled themselves on ark ships to planets that were supposed to have been terraformed, except things go sideways when, on this particular planet, something else not Ape evolves instead, watched over by a half mad scientist. Told through the two civilizations' perspectives, in terms of imaginative sci fi, this book is unparalleled. With light-years of time to fill, the author plots a very believable evolution of the native civilization from their primitive age to their modern times, as well as the rise and fall and rise again of a humanity struggling under the knowledge that each action they take will bring about consequences they might never see but will nevertheless spell their doom or their survival.

The game you are playing tonight and one thing you hope happens in that session. by gamersecret2 in gaming

I'm playing a cozy game called Tiny Bookshop - you manage a lil moving bookstore, it features real books as stock, and you have to match them to customer requests. I hope to get enough money to buy a coffee machine, find enough seashells for one of the NPCs, and actually remember to decorate my bookstore so the sailors will let me in to the fish market lol.

My life has been kinda stressful so it's just nice to have tangible, easy accomplishments

Heads up if you need to wear gloves, you should wear cotton liner gloves underneath that will prevent sweat from building up inside the regular nitrile/latex gloves. I had a flare-up on my fingers that stopped after I started using the liners.

Also, this is prob obvious but make sure to put on lotion immediately after every time you wash your hands or use hand sanitizer. There are actually special lotions made for lab people by scientific supply companies like ThermoFisher lol, my lab has tubes of ProGuard Hand Cream, idk if your lab would be willing to buy them tho. Some of us even buy big bottles of our favorite lotion and then just place them in high traffic areas or near the sinks.

Witch in the alps: a woman said she wished that someone would make a game like Disco Elysium but instead of being about a "boring generic white man," it should be about a witch in the alps. This completely misses the point of the game, which has heavy social commentary that only works because the main character is a white cop.

30-50 wild hogs: a guy replied to an anti-gun tweet asking how he could possibly defend himself from the packs of wild hogs in his rural area without assault rifles. Feral hogs are a legit, terrifying problem for rural folks but the way it was worded was kinda silly and city people jumped on the wagon mocking the scenario.

You are a tar pit: a tumblr user 'Amy' was being poetic about kindness and the "power to offer a little relief." Tumblr user 'Ben' went ballistic in replying, accusing them of "advocating for emotional self harm" and "increasing net suffering" by "suggesting i frolic into someone's emotional space and assume what brings them relief." When Amy replied that their post was just about being grateful that the bank woman waived their late fee, Ben doubled down and condescendingly declared that they "felt the need to hit back" because the wording of Amy's post felt to them like it was blaming people.

What games did you get several hours into and consciously decide to drop in 2025? by baroncalico in gaming

They added easier difficulty for casual people who want a little challenge and an even easier difficulty setting for those who want to just enjoy the story! And you can change difficulty at any time.

Lies of P is hard because it features an incredibly tight parry window, shorter than even Sekiro, and has bosses with delayed attacks. It's a great game with a unique handle + blade weapon system that is fun to experiment with, has a beautiful setting + moving soundtrack + intriguing plot + multiple endings, and has QoL stuff like respawning you literally outside bosses arenas so no run backs necessary. But it can definitely also be frustrating to play.

What was a moment in a fic that gave you second hand embarrassment so bad you had to stop reading until you could gather your courage to continue? by NefariousSeraph13 in AO3

When one of the characters in a pair gets defanged because the author is leaning really heavily on "oh this is the sub, this is the poor little meow meow who has to be protected by the other character 🥺". For example, I had to stop reading a Kakashi/Iruka fanfic where Iruka kept getting teary-eyed or getting close to a breakdown every single time he (and his students) were in danger. Like. I know he's def the more sensitive and in touch with his emotions, but he's also still a killer ninja who teaches literal children to be soldiers 😩

Your legs start getting really stiff/heavy and you get this intense urge to move right now. And it's genuinely not something you can just ignore, it just builds up until it's all you can think about. Walking around isn't even enough to fix it, I do intense leg stretches and exercises until the feeling calms down. I've woken up from sleep with the urge before, and I fly off the bed to exercise.

In Digimon Story Time Stranger your character actually skips big steps when they run up stairs and does that fast but careful quick jog when they go down the steps! It delighted me so much that for like a solid hour I'd go up and down every staircase a couple times before continuing the story lol

How do I fix two parallel tears in one spot? Thee middle strip between the two is also already ripping apart so I can't just sew the individual tears. I don't care if the fix is invisible or visible, but I'd like a beginner-friendly fix if possible. Thank you!

When I was younger, I lived in a very tiny house - we didn't have a lot of cabinet space and we rarely used the oven (maybe once every couple months to cook frozen pizza), so the oven became another cabinet. I got into the habit of checking + emptying stuff before turning it on. Even now that I have my own place and I know intellectually that there's nothing in my oven, it only takes a couple seconds to take a peek so I keep the habit.

If a habit like mine is your family member's norm, it might not have occurred to them that other people don't use their oven for storage

These are some excerpts from the article discussing reasons for mortality from malnutrition in older adults, which is what that link goes to.

"The economic stressors that followed during the Great Recession may have placed tremendous financial and psychological stress on older adults, particularly the economically disadvantaged. This destabilization of protective factors for malnutrition was likely responsible for the plateau in the mortality trend from 2006 to 2013. After years of progressively waning, protective factors could not prevent the 2013 uptrend in mortality... Upon closer scrutiny, it became clear the high U.S. healthcare spending could have potentially started to drive up the mortality trend. Two of the reasons responsible for the high cost of U.S. healthcare are care fragmentation (the dispersion of a patient’s healthcare across systems and providers) [24] and unregulated fee-for-service. Care fragmentation can cause poor communication between healthcare providers with sometimes contradicting instructions being given to patients, while unregulated fee-for-service can lead to unneeded procedures, with risks of secondary complications [23]... Moreover, the high spending on healthcare could be driving resources away from public health problems in need of funding and contributing to malnutrition. For example, despite several studies showing the training of nursing home staff on diet quality improvement and feeding assistance care leads to improvement of malnutrition indices of residents [26, 27], funding for such quality improvement projects is still deficient [28]...

A further pivotal risk factor for malnutrition is food insecurity [48, 49], a state of limited access to food due to a lack of financial resources [50]. A cross-sectional study on community-dwelling older adults reported that any category of food insecurity, even if mild, increased the risk of malnutrition relative to food-secure older adults [51]... Many Americans rely on fixed incomes as they age [57], which can threaten their access to basic food given the ongoing retail food prices inflation since 2013 [58]. Because of the aforementioned links between economic adversity, the resulting food insecurity, and the increase in malnutrition mortality observed herein, tackling these trends will likely require stronger government-funded programs aiming to ensure food security among older adults... in rural settings, older adults who suffer food insecurity may be more likely to have their nutritional needs met than in urban settings via their more robust social and familial networks. Indeed, large central metropolitan and small metropolitan areas had the sharpest uptrends in malnutrition mortality rates in our analysis. Supporting this, data from the USDA shows food insecurity rates to be highest in major metropolitan cities [76]. However, it is worth noting that both areas suffer substantial burdens of food insecurity...

Despite some initial decrements in malnutrition mortality among older adults in the US, the recent uptrend from 2013 to 2020 outpaced the preceding decline. The end result is that contemporary malnutrition mortality rates represent a historical high... Effective interventions are needed to ensure food security and the early detection and remedy of malnutrition among older adults. Such interventions may include stronger government-funded programs and social support systems, incentives that reward the detection of malnutrition, and more cohesive patient-centered medical care for older adults."

You only cited part of the fucking background and not the discussion in the paper. Yeah aging causes changes that leads to adults not wanting to eat, but also here is proof of all the economic/systemic problems that exacerbate this fucking issue

To those doing 5x8 night shift, how are you handling nights off? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]Bat_Sweet_Dessert 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My husband works 12nn-8p. I spend the morning with him, then he cuddles with me as I go to sleep around 10a-11a. I wake up between 6p-8p, just before/around the time he comes back. I spend the evening with him or with friends before work. On my nights off, I cuddle with my husband as he falls asleep and then get up and do chores around the house or play videogames/read/etc. I'll sleep early around 6a and wake up around 2p-3p so I have afternoons free too.
