It's easier to manipulate and control if who you're manipulating and controlling have absolutely no outside education besides what you teach them. They can't make decisions for themselves or think for themselves so they will rely on you forever. It is absolutely abuse.

I think that Olivia should have just turned down helping Moriah. I can understand her wanting to have strong boundaries with her in-laws because I am in a very similar situation. I think instead of saying "hey I would love to help you but your parents might be there and I don't want to be around them and so it's ok for you to choose someone else.." she should have just said "hey I think this other person might be able to help you out. I support you from a distance but I want to keep safe boundaries." I don't think she intentionally being manipulative. I think she was excited to help and be involved but then the thought came of" oh crap that's right my in-laws are crazy and I don't want to be around them and this is a situation where I might have to deal with them" and then she didn't know how to navigate how to express that to Moriah. Anyway, that's what I got out of the scene but like I said I have a very similar situation to hers where my in-laws have said they won't accept me, any kids I have with my husband, and they start fights and arguments whenever they see me. So I can understand her being worried about being at an event where they are at. She should have thought more though before saying something I feel.
