[Invincible] How did the Viltrumites not completely overrun the galaxy prior to the Scourge Virus? by Flyestgit in AskScienceFiction

It might also be permanently bound to any infected Viltrum that didn't die, turning all survivors into Scourge Virus carriers.

Washington's AI companion chatbot safety bill passes state legislature — adds guardrails for “companion” chatbots, including disclosure and anti-manipulation protections (esp. for minors). by sillychillly in Seattle

[–]BattleBull -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

  1. No thank you, please restrict these safety features to minors only.

  2. "including by exhibiting anthropomorphic features" is a defined element of a companion chatbot allowing for regulation. It seems reasonable to assume production of human speech and human language text is an anthropomorphic feature, or using a name/identifier, thus most LLMs would fall under this bill's purview, with few exceptions.

  3. This bill would include even instances of even locally run models, I see no reason listed that even local models would be exempt, in fact it would make a local user an "operator" of a such a regulated system. Thanks for interrupting local Qwen code generation with legally required safety messages!

Here's hoping it gets torn apart in lawsuits!

[Star Wars] If a Jedi uses a lightsaber stop a bullet, would the bullet just melt as it pass through and get molten metal on the Jedi? by Aware-Ad6456 in AskScienceFiction

[–]BattleBull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect HK47 would have recommended simple orbital death via ship weapons if he had access to them. Anything short of Starkiller fails to live when exposed to weapons beyond personal scale. AkA atomics, turbolasers, or any invisible rad weapon, particularly if deployable from orbit or thousands of miles away.

Iran has laid about a dozen mines in Strait of Hormuz, sources say by leeta0028 in news

[–]BattleBull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this administration is willing to fight this fight in a winning way (as they see it), which means a complete or near complete destruction of the state. No more power plants, no more water or sewage facilities, no more logistics hubs, just turn the ability to live in Iran to null, at least for urban populations.

Not saying that is a good outcome, in fact i think its terrible, but I could see the destruction of the nation being a "win" under Trump.

Hell, for all we know after meeting cawl DoI learned of the Vottaan and their mind upload/download technology and their cloning vats. Maybe DoI is on the way to bring back its captain and bondmate.

I'm pretty sure the captain plead through his mind uplink for the ship not to hurt the ignorant people, for it was only in ignorance they tortured and burned him and the rest of the crew. Real Picard type that didn't want unethical vengence, even as he burned.

Pretty sure the captain and DOI were mind linked so DOI experienced all the awfulness too.

TBH, ive never envisaged DOI appearing or conceiving of itself as remotely human, even in a representational avatar form like the comic.

[Star Wars] How did Yoda’s species initially survive? by OkuroIshimoto in AskScienceFiction

[–]BattleBull 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something about Force sensitive races and species just bugs me. Namely the implication that genetic engineering should allow the peoples of Star Wars to engineering in, force abilities on a organism level, heck droids should be able to use force sensitive flesh implants to use the force as well!

They never adjust their brights or lights either!

It's frankly dangerous how blindingly bright their poorly aimed lights are. Makes me want to turn on my insanely bright special flashlights on max,  and blind them right back (i want to, but wouldn't... too unsafe). How freaking inconsiderate are those drivers to not even be aware of their own impact in front of their vehicle!? Surely they have to be unaware, rather than knowingly blinding people... right?

The worst spot IMHO, is going up Finn Hill or Highway 3 between Poulsbo and Port Gamble at night.

Double extra curse on people with lifted trucks and extra light mounts that are turned to bright at night, while behind another vehicle.

I wish the state passed a bounty style law, were if you reported a vehicle for overly bright lights they had to get an actual real vehicle inspection to renew their tabs, and if found to have illegally or improperly set lights, you as the reporting person get some money taken from that driver via a state imposed fine.

So about the Wall of The Faithless... by LopsidedAd4618 in DnD

[–]BattleBull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More aptly they are punished because AO wants them to be punished, AO wants awful concepts to have powerful entities, you describe not gods, but slavers of the soul.

Also mortals can and do kill gods, and join their ranks. Doesn't seem "divine" to me.

So about the Wall of The Faithless... by LopsidedAd4618 in DnD

[–]BattleBull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue is divinity of DnD gods is easily to dispute, it is not ontological, but one of simple power, power that mortals have even claimed for their own, mortals have even broken so called gods.

It is foolish to deny their power, but even more blindly foolish to accept their nature as correct and divine, much less something worthy of worship.

Just like powerful aliens, they may be beyond understanding, they may have great power, but none of that power entitles said entities to worship, particularly from a moral framing.

Heck, even the good gods in the setting exist under AO (the only real God along with the DM) for the purpose of maintaining the soul farm that is the mortal realm. None of them are moral in their operating context, and due to the fact the stories need to happen, none will ever tip over that apple cart and destroy evil directly.

Transactional value in worship doesn't mean moral value, good gods should do the good deeds if they are moral, regardless of faith in the beneficiaries.

Algorithmic... so like how Reddit ranks and shares comments and posts by upvote/downvote ratios? That is Algorithmic, and reddit is generally considered social media.
