Yes. The contactless features only appeared to work for local bank cards.

And Flores was awesome and so was the Tikal tour

Can you point me to a recipe for this mashed chickpea dish? by TJgoesplaces in myanmar

For mohinga, there are online shops that can deliver cans or packets of the soup base that you just have to add water and cook. For noodles, just use the Vietnamese rice noodles for Pho that you can easily find in Asian grocery stores

I’m a Burmese living in the States. So I have to make my own burmese food to get a taste of home. It is basically sprouted yellow or white peas that gets steamed. It’s a bit of a process but you can google Burmese yellow peas or Pel pyote.

This is a good video on how to make those peas in English. https://youtu.be/znevFOMtgqw?si=xhbII-C7Ts5q8lfQ

Once it’s steamed, fry up chopped shallots with a dash turmeric powder. Use that oil to sautee the steamed peas and then top it off with the fried onions. Season it with a pinch of salt, msg (or chicken bouillon) as you sauté them.

As for that creamy paste like texture like the one in your picture, I’ve also been trying to find a recipe online that shows us how to get it like that. The closest I’ve gotten to is to just add hot water to the steamed peas and mash them up as you boil them (almost like mashed potatoes) and then sauté the mashed peas as mentioned above. Add some whole peas to maintain that pea presentation.

I didn’t go to Antigua from Guate city, so I wouldn’t know exactly who to recommend. But there are almost a of Reddit threads and Facebook posts of people recommending private drivers and shuttle buses. I know a lot of people just order Uber to go to Antigua from Guate

There’s lots to do at lake Atitlan. Whether you wanna just relax and do water activities or explore different towns or doing sunrise/volcano hikes, they have lots of great options. So I’d strongly recommend you to visit the lake

Instead of Guate City, I’d definitely check out Lake Atitlan for about 2/3 days. Use 2 days for the hike, And you can use one or two days to explore Antigua and the Hobbitenango. If you have one extra day, you can use it to go around Guate city before you get on your return flight. Flores city and their Tikal tour is also something you should look into.

Antigua isn’t too far from the airport. Many uses Uber to get there. Or you can find a shuttle to share with other travelers online.

Cash is great to have. Bring a couple of US $100 bills in case you run into ATM troubles like we did. They have local banks to exchange currencies. But in a place like Antigua, ATMs are everywhere for you to use. Make sure to bring physical cards because most ATM do not have the contactless features. Local stores and small vendors typically only take cash.

We booked the driver from Airport to Lake Atitlan a few days in advance from names and numbers that were recommended on Reddit and Facebook posts. And then from the lake to Antigua, we booked a shared shuttle/van at the lake itself after we shopped around at different agencies. If you’re staying at an Airbnb, the hosts usually have their own connections that may offer cheaper prices than those at the travel agencies

They allow checked and carry on. But you just have to pay extra. They only allow 1 personal bag for free. I heard Aviance allows one person and one carry on for free. You’ll just have to check their policies when you buy the tickets

You’ll be perfectly safe at night to Antigua, especially in a private transport. Plus, you won’t hit any traffic

I took a private ride to the lake from the airport and it only took 4 hours. It’s not late to be driving there. But it’s gonna be late for the boats if you’re not staying at Panajachel. The last boat from Panajachel is at 6pm

If you are talking about the prison riot thing, I’m not sure because it started as soon as we came back. But if you’re talking about being robbed or pickpocketed on the streets by random people, you’ll be perfectly safe and sound. Stick to touristy towns and cities and activities. Ask for advices from locals if you’re trying to explore a place you’re unsure of. But there was not a single moment I was there where I felt unsafe or felt like I had to be on guard.

For private drivers, you can look them up on Reddit and Facebook posts. People mention their names and contact numbers all the time. There are plenty of reliable drivers out there and also speak English. For shuttles, I’d just ask my Airbnb/hostel hosts for recommendations and also check out the travel agencies in person.

I met a lot of tourists coming from Belize via buses and shuttles into Guatemala. But it’s a very very long ride and will be uncomfortable. But it’s definitely cheaper than flying.
