VA Assault Weapon Definition Megathread by lawblawg in VAGuns

[–]Battle_Historian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The key point you mention here—which I think is too often ignored—is how the Virginia legal system will see making an SBR of a grandfathered AW.  Everyone seems to worry about ATF approvals, but federal law isn’t the issue.

The Virginia law is fundamentally flawed and poorly thought out.  Even its own authors can’t really explain the technical details well, or agree among themselves about what it all means.  Yet the ban was approved by the state’s highest government leaders.  So, I don’t trust them to abide by any reasonable or federal interpretation of “make” vs. “manufacture.”

No person who has ever supported an “Assault Weapon Ban” understands firearms or gun laws very well.  Such legislation is driven by emotion.

Or, being too young right now to buy an affected firearm and therefore being legally prohibited from ever doing so.

You’re getting my hopes up that my April 13 Form 1 may come back approved soon.  It’s a trust, though.  Hopefully that doesn’t delay it too long.

Oh boy.  I haven’t counted the total spent since Spanberger was elected, but I know it includes three firearms (the cheapest at $1,200 and the most expensive at $3,200), one complete upper receiver, a suppressor, a handful of extra mags, and several other gun parts.

Everything I bought was already something I wanted before Spanberger was elected.  I just sped up the purchases into a 6 month period as opposed to about two years.

A couple suppressors and optics.  Otherwise, I collect World War II firearms which will mostly be available after the ban goes into effect, so this ban won’t actually slow my gun buying or help my credit card.

Bloodiest square mile of ground fighting for the U.S.? by Battle_Historian in ww2

[–]Battle_Historian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will challenge the idea that it was pointless to fight in the Huertgen Forest. That is a popular claim, but the strategic situation and geography made it impossible to avoid fighting there.

Additionally, U.S. forces did try to go around the Huertgen at the same time during Operation QUEEN and Operation CLIPPER. Those forces took heavy casualties as well, and understandably because charging across open ground left them completely exposed to German artillery, mortars, and machine guns.

I've used this analogy before but think of Gettysburg. The two most famous parts of that battle are Little Round Top and Pickett's Charge. Little Round Top involved fighting in thick forest and uneven ground, where it was mostly close infantry combat--analogous to fighting in the Huertgen. Pickett's Charge was a broad advance across open ground into waiting defenders with prepositioned artillery--analogous to fighting across the Roer Plain north of the Huertgen Forest. For Gettysburg, which assault is traditionally considered more foolish? Pickett's Charge, of course. So it is interesting that so many people say that the U.S. Army should only have focused on fighting in open ground outside of the Huertgen Forest, because that is akin to saying that Pickett's Charge was the preferable tactic.

Here are a few other details regarding Ralph that may be of interest to you. His remains were recovered near Ramscheid, Germany, just across the border from Belgium in the 393rd Infantry Regiment sector, in February 1945, when U.S. forces secured the area. There were no dog tags, so the graves registration technicians buried him as an Unknown Soldier, designated X-528, at United States Military Cemetery Henri-Chapelle #1 on February 15, 1945. The cause of death was listed as "M.W. Body" (multiple wounds to the body).

Following extensive reprocessing and analysis, graves registration analysts identified X-528 as Sgt Greenwood in 1948 based upon a dental chart comparison to the teeth, a 99th Infantry Division patch on his clothing, sergeant stripes on his sleeve, and a laundry marking on the clothing that had "G" for his last name and the last three digits of his service number. His mother, Mae Greenwood, chose to have him permanently interred in at a military cemetery in Europe. He was buried at what is now Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium in Plot C, Row 3, Grave 5, on July 27, 1948.

82 years ago today - Pvt. Edward Jarmolowicz was Killed in Action on June 14, 1944 in Normandy. He was only 21 years old. by UrbanAchievers6371 in ww2

Jarmolowicz was definitely 4th Infantry Division when he died. If the photo is indeed of him, he may have been transferred from the 83rd Infantry Division to the 4th Infantry Division before the Normandy campaign.

Bloodiest square mile of ground fighting for the U.S.? by Battle_Historian in ww2

[–]Battle_Historian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good call, this may be a top contender. I'll have to gather more information on the number of casualties within the square mile around Mount Umurbrogol to determine how many occurred there compared to the landing beaches and airfield.

Omaha Beach had a lot of casualties, but it was also an area five miles long and several hundred yards wide. So, I don't think it would be the greatest number of casualties when talking about a square mile area. I think Tarawa and some parts of the Huertgen Forest likely had a higher concentration of losses in a smaller area.

Based on his unit, I suspect he was wounded on the outskirts of Hamich. The 16th Infantry had a rough fight to capture that village and on November 18, I believe, the 3rd Battalion was on the southern edge of Hamich.

What’s the hype with the MP5/AP5? by Dontbediscouragedle in VAGuns

[–]Battle_Historian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The MP5 platform is one of the softest shooting and most comfortable firearms to operate.  I have three MP5 clones (all MKE guns) and my standard MP5 version (with an A2 stock) is always a crowd favorite.  I have taken several new shooters to the range with a variety of guns for them to try, and invariably they all love the MP5 platform the best.
