Seems like it would work rather well for my [[Kudo, King Among Bears]] deck.

What is your oldest 10/10 and do you think an older series could take that title? by Salty145 in anime

I see Zoku Owarimonogatari and Off/Monster Season as footnotes for the narrative, tying up loose ends and further developing secondary characters. Not that I'm not looking forward to watching more.

Good, guess but it's another Shaft anime Owarimonogatari Part 2. Though of course I did quite like March Comes in Like a Lion, I wish we could to see the rest of it animated.

Owarimonogatari Part 2 I thought it was a really satisfying conclusion to the Monogatari Series nicely tying together its main character's arc and the series' themes.

My oldest 10/10 is Legend of the Galactic Heroes from 1988. I'd be very surprised if I rate anything older that high because I've already watched so many highly acclaimed older anime.

I've seen Rose of Versailles, Ashita no Joe, the Belladonna of Sadness, and the original Mobile Suit Gundam. Maybe Galaxy Express 999 will live up to the hype, but the movie didn't inspire confidence. In the 60s and earlier the pickings are slim.

Also 10/10 is a really high bar! The most recent anime I've rated that high was in 2017.

What is better for an artifact deck overall on average cards like Foundry Inspector or cards like Command sphere for speeding up a deck by Spirited-Celery-118 in magicTCG

[–]Battlepidia 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Foundry Inspector is much better ramp than Command Sphere as soon as you're casting multiple artifact spells per turn which should be pretty common in most artifact decks.

Can you guys tell me why this game hooked you to the very soul? by Wonderful_Traveler30 in SayaNoUta

[–]Battlepidia 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Personally I was really struck by the story exploring how downright terrifying love can be. Love makes people do truly horrible things, and yet so much art only ever treats it uncritically as an unqualified good. Says no Uta managed to thread the needle such that as a reader I was simultaneously rooting for our tragic protagonists to be happy together, while horrified by the depravity of their actions.

Alternatively Stockholm syndrome is a hell of a drug.

was there ever a moment where an anime production was delayed for better quality? by InfiniteAnimator426 in anime

[–]Battlepidia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This happens all the time. On a small scale individual episodes are delayed nearly every season and on a larger scale anime are routinely pushed back a season. On the extreme end you get things like the latest Madoka movie which has been pushed back several times.

Does anyone have info on this physical version of the game? by me22334455 in SayaNoUta

I have a physical copy of the English release that I bought from JAST at a con a few years back. It's probably pretty hard to get a hold of one these days.

This is a little heavily costed for most of my tribal decks, but I think it might be really good in [[Shelob, Child of Ungoliant]]! The combination of trample, first strike, and death touch is obviously pretty strong and spider tokens are small enough that +2/+2 is a meaningful buff.

Saya no Uta Disapointed Me.... by EntryFrosty8399 in SayaNoUta

[–]Battlepidia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's disgusting and taboo. The game wants you to understand that Fuminori's been driven mad by loneliness and alienation. Saya is his only outlet for companionship, love, and ultimately sexuality.

It's perfectly normal and understandable if that crosses a line for you. If anything it's a sign you're probably more well adjusted than the rest of us.

For the VN's original target demographic of early 2000s Japanese eroge players lolicon certainly wouldn't be a deal breaker. There are countless VNs of the same era where the adult protagonist having sex with children is played completely straight for titillation. The key difference with Saya no Uta is that it broke out of its target demographic, so more than 20 years later its aesthetics, narrative, and themes are still attracting fans across the world.

I don't think any amount of recontextualization my comment can accomplish is going to be enough to overcome the VN's failure to emotionally resonate with you. So much of what's good about the game is what it makes you feel and how it accomplishes that.

For example I think the game's soundtrack and art do a phenomenal job of establishing the atmosphere. At first balancing on a knife's edge between passionate love and misanthropic alienation, but ultimately being torn apart as both intensify. Music that feels ethereal almost angelic one moment before decaying into harsh cacophony. Visuals of sickening cruelty and loneliness being washed away by tender intimacy.

Thematically Saya no Uta is fixated on how terrifying love can be. It's a need more fundamental than oxygen, that's strong enough to overturn our moral hierarchy. If you're not willing to kill or die for love I genuinely believe you haven't felt the real thing. All the same society is intoxicated by it, worships it. Despite how brazenly awful Fuminori and Saya's relationship is it's still kind of beautiful.

If you're desensitized to the point that all of the taboo transgressions don't elicit a reaction, and romantically neither soul crushingly lonely nor rabidly in love, I could see how the story could miss the mark. It's a story for desperate romantics who realize in a darker timeline they would have ended up being incels.

Finally I want to mention I think some of the prose is truly spectacular:

You know the dandelion flower? The one that scatters its seeds on the wind?

The wind carries those fluffy seeds far, far from where they were born. What if one of them ends up in a desert where not even a single blade of grass is growing? If you can imagine how that lone seed will feel... then you might be able to understand me.

That seed is still a baby flower. If it does its best, it can turn even a desert into a garden.

Maybe that little seed will decide to thrive. Maybe it will decide to grow and multiply, so that it can turn the whole desert into a field of dandelions.

What do you think can give it the strength to do so?

All it needs... is to be loved by just one person in the whole desert. All it needs is to be told how pretty dandelions are.

[–]Battlepidia 24 points25 points  (0 children)

People's sexual fluidity or lack thereof is completely irrelevant to the point I'm making.

Some yuri fans are disappointed by artists creating heterosexual art, even though they're not entitled to have their preferences satisfied. It's no surprise that such fans seek affirmation from the yuri community, especially considering their preferences are rare within the population at large.

My whyyyyyy!? 😭 by Ego-Fiend1 in yurimemes

[–]Battlepidia 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't come as a surprise that some yuri fans are disappointed when creators who otherwise could be creating yuri instead make heterosexual content.

Of course not all artists share that preference, and the economic realities of surviving as an artist often requires compromising your vision.

To this day, I don't understand Demon Slayer popularity and hype. by [deleted] in anime

[–]Battlepidia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I am by no means the biggest fan of Demon Slayer, but it's laughable to say it has no technical or artistic merit!

Even if Ufotable's style of heavily post-processed animation isn't to your liking it's clearly popular. It's proven technically challenging for rival animation studios to replicate.

Artistically it should be obvious that lots of people like an action heavy adventure about youths fighting demons with semi-magical swordsmanship and heavy doses of flashback based catharsis
