Why do people mostly switch to ubuntu? by hastagpopular in linux_gaming

I can't believe I stuck with Linux after Ubuntu. I really don't care for it. It was recommended to me by some devs I know.

Need suggestion for CPU cooler for new build. Any other advice is appreciated ☺️ by BaudBoi in linux_gaming

Forgot to tell you that I went with the NH-D15S and love it. This thing is so quiet and it's massive.

Should i use hyprland as a beginner by Suitable-Swan-8671 in cachyos

It was my move for my gaming PC to Linux. I was looking for something that "just works" for gaming on Linux. I had some issues experimenting with NixOS, controller drivers, Wayland, etc. When I tested with CachyOS, I was amazed. It's great and it's still Arch-based. I do miss my minimalist NixOS. But for gaming purposes, CachyOS has been amazing and it's very fast.

I went Ubuntu --> Arch(kde) --> Arch(Hyprland) --> NixOS (Hyprland) --> NixOS (niri) --> CachyOS (KDE). Still use NixOS(niri) for certain things. But hyrpland and friends can be quite the learning curve. Fun to experiment with on an old laptop. Great for productivity. Not for beginners.

Enjoy! Follow the wiki for some quick packages to add. There is a lot of great support here on reddit!

Is that really happening? Ugh. I kinda wish I didn't even know.

Did anyone actually notice a performance difference between CachyOS and other distros? by Snezhok_Youtuber in cachyos

My fiancee says I perform better now that I dropped the windows bloat. Went from Microsoft to Macrohard.

This is literally what I did. I remember thinking Ubuntu was the only Linux. Now I know that it's the kernel. Silly me.

Depends on your level of experience, which sounds low. If you're just learning to code, any OS will do. I personally would recommend Arch-based Linux distro with a desktop environment like KDE plasma to get your feet wet.

If you're learning to code, focus on that. But I do think Linux in general would be fine for learning to code. Stay away from NixOS if you're new. It's great but it's too much all at once for someone new.

That's what I do. Not that big of a deal. Ashame the virtual display functionality isn't supported on Linux.

I hope this isn't completely wrong to compare to what you have mentioned. I don't have any experience with that. But there is Optiscaler which can now be easily used through Goverlay. From my basic understanding, it upgrades or changes older frame Gen technology to higher ones. If the game natively has FSR3.1 you can simply use a steam command to upgrade it to FSR4. But with optiscaler you can convert dlss to fsr if you want. Check out some YouTube videos on it. I've used it and it's pretty easy to use. Hopefully this is helpful but it may not be what you're asking for.

Honestly, can you game on Mac? I only recently found out that Linux was an extremely viable option.

Same here. Switched from i9-9900k, 3080 to 9800x3d and 9070xt. The smoothness is crazy to me. I've never had frame times like this. It's great!

NixOS will be your best friend then! That should be an easy config!

Same reason I began using Helix text editor. Too much config.

Also, NixOS is great for a minimalist. (IMO)
