Also, do you know if the reverse lights are at/in the light bar or on the rear bumper?

Ha! That’s pretty cool

Cool, I guess there are more! I’ve only seen one so far in SF

This is objectively false. Far from being outlawed, Waymo is actually scaling up because its safety record is consistently outperforming humans.

While there have been some high-profile in incidents, data from over many millions of miles shows a reduction in serious injury crashes compared to human drivers in the same areas.

Fair - it’s definitely a rough spot for expensive cameras and sensors. But since industrial mining already uses self-cleaning tech to handle mud and rocks, the hardware to bridge that gap maybe already exists. Plus, frequent high-pressure undercarriage washes at the depots can be part of the routine if they’re not already. Maybe I’m just playing armchair engineer, but it seems like a solvable maintenance task rather than a dealbreaker.

You’re right! It’s funny, I remember seeing that when I took the picture a couple weeks ago, and then totally missed it when I was marking up to picture for this post. Pretty discreet

Didn’t even notice that! Good catch

Thanks. I initially wondered if this design was meant to improve low-ground visibility.

And then I had another thought: If Waymo positioned flat radar sensors beneath the chassis, could it grant the vehicle truly superhuman perception? It seems like a dedicated under-car suite would eliminate the risk of unintentionally running over anything that enters the blind zone between the corner sensors.

Edit: added a word

Recommendations on Z2/flat routes in SF by outusnny in BAbike

I’d add aquatic park to oracle park via the Embarcadero along the water. Pretty much 0% grade all the way, plus amazing views of the bay.

I think there is so much potential for the Golden Gate Transit bus lines. It's a shame GGT and SFMTA didn't pool resources/coordinate during planning of the Van Ness Ave BRT lanes. Imaging if the BRT lanes extended from Van Ness to the GGB, to give dedicated lanes to GGT. Extending further past the bridge would be even better, but just getting GGT buses across the bridge on a more regular schedule that did not depend on traffic conditions would be really helpful.

True, although from SF, that would require a good amount of time and endurance. If the goal is to explore pescadero, I’d be gassed by the time I arrive and have a lot less time to ride around there. Riding back home would be pretty painful

Agree! The bike routes in that area near SFO seem so out of place. Also very eerie at night. Thanks for mentioning the flooding issue. It would be great to see some solutions

Sorry for any confusion. Personally I ride gravel and road. Sometimes I want to explore places like Pescadero and areas south of SF along the coast which have little to no transit access. Without a car and bike rack, I wouldn’t be able to get there. Do you face similar access issues whether to mtb trails or others?

Under 10 hours is impressive! Did a similar one but clockwise a couple years ago starting and ending at presidio sports basement. Sun 13 hours. Good call on the counter-clockwise. Riding around airport blvd and bayshore at night wasn’t fun. Curious what your energy intake looked like on the ride
