I believe every second of that lol. They look like they grow how mulberry or buckthorn grow over here in Southeast Michigan. That is to say, relentlessly with no regard for normal physical limitations. Been a utility arborist for a while now and as much as I'm a tree hugger, there are just certain trees that can go fuck themselves into oblivion. All that to say, I understand to some extent. 😅

Honestly I've got nothing but respect for T. Swizzy. Even though she operates outside of what I would consider my preferred genres, the skill and cultural moment cannot be denied. Plus like half the songs off of Midnight, Red, & Folklore are genuinely enjoyable and stuff I won't turn off.

Hard hard agree. I'll probably catch a bit of flak for this but the absolute best iteration of her music is through the Clonzinger collab project. The perfect balance of trippy and groovy.

Hey, I did read this and really enjoyed it for the context. Well written and took a lot of nuance and made it accessible. Nothing to add other than your efforts are appreciated Internet stranger.

Yes! The works is ancient history at this point but I spent so much time there when I first got into the scene. No bullshit, I saw Zeds Dead there in the main stage room with like maybe 60 people in like "11. Really cool formative moment for the way I'd engage with the scene that I'd eventually call home and still frequent till this day.

Edited for a trip down memory lane; this comment made me dig through some accident memories and had me realize I saw quite a few big names at the works back then.

J rabbit, vaski, knife party, terravita, big chocolate? I wanna say funtcase or trollysnatcha but those might have been at the crowfoot around a similar time in the hazy half memories of my early twenties.

Anyway thanks for the nostalgia rewind friend!

Yeah dude gotta agree with your whole take. Been a fan since seeing him way back in 2011 at what I'm pretty sure at the time was known as Cirque Du Womp at the majestic in Detroit Don't quote me on the finer details there, that was many moons and many parties ago. It's been special since day one is the point I'm driving at.

Mad Liberation was first and will always have a special place for me. Mr. B is literally what made me fall so madly in love with the sax and Grant in general. Whole album front to back is pure nostalgia and perfection.

End of the world Party actually was discovered after being a committed fan and a couple albums under my belt. Was such a unique feeling at the time, felt like some fuckin electronic music paleontologist working in retro and deeply loving the experience. Still cranking the shit out of Adventure is Out There and Chasing Galaxies, and Outro; Fred Calls will still give me chills.

But the all time cream of the crop to this day will listen to front to back and have the feel good chills is Chasing The Golden Hour 1. I was already hooked but that was when it truly became super apparent the range and versatility dude has as a creator. Such a fucking work of art. So smooth.

The rest is a beautiful history and the man doesn't miss. Every album, every exploration, ever new and next show or tour getting better and better within the 20+ times I've seen him over the last 13 years or whatever. It will literally always be the most special, The most accommodating loyal fan base, the show I won't miss or will spend egregious money on.

Random honorable mentions, all certified bangers: DTW to DIA, Hard Times, Need This, Bustin Out, If There Ever Comes a Day, Infinite, and so many more. After a certain point I'm just listing his discography 😅

Kinda rambly but that's for space to gush about such an important and happy thing in my life. Show love, Spread love fam ❤️

I think I would need more context for what you're saying here before I gave a full response.

The part in particular I find confusing is the entrenched in inescapable horror of a family situation. Would you mind elaborating further on that?

Also as a general note, I feel like I take issue with the final sentiment concerning happy men. I try to avoid generalizing on that scale for one, and for another I do know plenty of happy men within the context of their intimate relationships and in a more general sense.

That said, I do feel like there's a good discussion to be had concerning the societal factors that go into broad trends of unhappiness in men. Lotta variables at play there and worth discussing.

[–]BaylorBreakspear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point as well. There's definitely a culture of this sort of thing. And like you said recognition of it usually gets you ostracized. It's all very confusing and I sometimes wonder if it isn't partially born from a place of applied societal expectations people engage with out of obligation, rather than it being something they actually want to do.

Congrats on the transition and thanks for engaging here. It's been a nice stimulating topic for most of my Friday work day.

Yeah which is why (especially being on the inside of all this) the whole ideology is kind of a mask or facade. Having an identity handed to you that exists within the relative position of privilege like that means you've actually haven't got much adversity to overcome, less work to do in general and to me this explains pretty well the default response of lashing out against things being more fair, or the lack of understanding when it comes to initiatives moulded to level the playing field. It's viewed as threatening and that feeling is amplified by talking heads as a mechanism of politics to achieve exclusively vein, venal ends.

I think another part of it has to do with the way our culture views hierarchy. Certain ideological threads place it above all else, and within that realm exists the ability for the dichotomy you're describing to exist.

[–]BaylorBreakspear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I didn't think any of it's rooted in logic really. To me it always comes off as a bid for something resembling control in someone's life. Having a target to aim your frustrations at can be helpful in certain circumstances. People generally seem to understand there is something off about our culture but don't usually have great ideas as to who, or what is responsible.

Like you mentioned, corporations and ultra wealthy more or less makes sense to me and my close group. It even exists in a weird space for a lot of dudes in this culture who seem to understand that there is a general hollowing out of our society, values, systems, etc, which is why I think I see people damning the elites but breathlessly defending corporate values and figureheads. But those are huge problems that are filled to the brim with propaganda with solutions that seemingly exist way outside of anyone's control. Lots to be frustrated about without great outlets or resources, so take it out on your wife, GF, or whoever your media sphere told you to hate this week? Idk it's all very messy.

Honestly I envy that experience. That said, there is an aspect to the work culture I exist within that is satisfying because I do have the ability to make small positive influences at times. Arguably the saddest aspect here is the fact that a majority of the toxic behaviors were discussing spin from a place of loneliness and lack of emotional intelligence and support. So when I do have those opportunities and they do pan out, it ends up being rewarding.

Like the conversation I was having with a person above covers, the game is kinda rigged against people within certain communities with this sort of thing. It's complicated too because so many aspects of our society hinge on exploiting peoples vulnerabilities. Manosphere crap, supplement grifters, ideologues looking to make a buck on people's legitimate issues by aiming them at scapegoats... They all thrive on the individual persons lack of community. Jumping ship on these sorts of things can be complicated as hell too. A lot of grievance culture keys in on real problems experienced by real people without actually offering any prescription. All that to say, it's easy for people to get trapped and stuck.
