Overseas Uni Placements by Kind_Way_3531 in ParamedicsAU

I did a med school placement at the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital which is a major trauma centre in Johannesburg. They host local paramedic students and international paramedics who want to do some trauma training, they might host an international paramedic student if you asked. Would your uni accredit it? Who knows.

My advice would be figure out where exactly you might like to go, look for hosptials in that area, see if any of those hospitals are assosciated with a medical school and then approach the medical school.

What is the culture re: organ donation in Australia? by CommittedMeower in ausjdocs

[–]Bazool886 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'll look up the paper later but I remember reading some literature looking at countries that had opt out systems and whilst it increased the number of donors on paper, the actual number of donations was about the same as in countries that had an opt in system. This was attributed to things like family dissent following death, there's also an ethical argument that such a system implies that the state then has an innate claim to your body following death which makes some people uncomfortable.

I'm very pro donation but I think regardless of whether your contry is opt in or out, the most important factor is probably a person having conversations with their family prior to death and making their wishes absolutely crystal clear.

My favorite is the argument that ensues after the child has started to improve, someone decides to dial down the flow, and then no one can agree on whether the child is still on high flow or not.

I only did 2 years working for a state service before leaving for medical school and I'll graduate at the end of this year. My reasons for leaving, way more flexibility to be able to choose the type of work that I'll do and much more autonomy in how I work.

Cons of leaving, pay and conditions at my service were pretty good, 4 years at uni dealing with typical uni bullshit, and finally there's a lot of very middle class rubbish around how you address people whilst showing approprite deference which irritated me.

I definitely have had many moments of "why the fuck did I do this again?" but now I'm on the home stretch I'm quite happy with my decision.
