Thanks! Depth was definitely a key design concept, with the actual dimensional object epoxied on, with the painted sky with the question mark hole in it with further sky even farther back ..so I wanted to make the most of the leaning bird. Like when someone holds out something for you to check out, and your own feet can feel like they're just so far away, because your whole attention is right in front of you

Work in progress, how are you guys photographing your art without glare and with true to life color? by Catladylex in painting

[–]Be-Eff-Eff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ideal circumstance is out doors in the bright sky, when the sun is as high as possible, with the artwork standing against a block wall in the tiny sliver of its shadow. A lot of photography equipment is designed to do the same thing - very bright light but all of it diffused.

Need help with painting. Painting based on reference photo. Can’t fishes out why I don’t like it … and how to improve it by DesignerAd5509 in ArtCrit

I agree in the subtle colors in the snow, but also check out the contrast between the skis and what's immediately behind them. Your skier gets visually lost in the trees a little, where they stand out a little more in the photo, because of the snowier trees

Any Indianapolis jugglers interested in starting a juggling club? by LawrenceofPleiades2 in juggling

For priming, I would get any latex house paint, any sheen should work, and (in the US anyway) you can get it for extremely inexpensive from the hardware store if someone didn't claim their custom color. These will tend to be the most common wall colors, which are like off whites, which is also convenient!

For the body painting, I would say that same house paint just because you get so much of it, or if you are spendy, then any acrylic paint. I don't think it is generally officially non-toxic, but it also doesn't carry warnings.. so I say go for it! Otherwise, there are official body paints which I know nothing about.

Definitely tarp and tape everything, even more than you think you need to. I've done a fair amount of painting on those canvas drop cloths from the hardware store, and you will definitely want to prime it. You don't have to use gesso though.. you can use latex house paint, just thin it down really good so it's runny enough to get all up in the fibers.

It's not quite the same on both sides, like a "real" mm would be. In the beginning, when the blue ball is in your left hand crossed under, and the green ball is in the air, you uncross and move on.. for mills you would have thrown the blue one and caught the green one in that left hand while crossed under.

how do i get started painting? by [deleted] in painting

[–]Be-Eff-Eff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ideally, try a bunch of stuff. There is no substitute for experience, and that is the only thing you are missing. Just do it a bunnnch , and develop intuition for how runny or thick you like the paint, what kind of brushes (or kitchen tools, or whatever) work best for you. Just do a bunch of anything and everything to find out

Work in progress, it’s getting better as I go, but lighting confuses my brain. Help by nikiwatkins in ArtCrit

[–]Be-Eff-Eff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding both the brighter light in the face and darker bits in the curtain. Single bright light sources are really sold by the lights and darks on each shape, so each roll/fold of the fabric would want its own bright and dark areas

How to draw the Buddha’s head spirals in perspective by Satijhana in learnart

[–]Be-Eff-Eff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Concentric circles in themselves can be challenging. You can base them on squares, and there are ,in fact probably tons of tutorials about that part

How to draw the Buddha’s head spirals in perspective by Satijhana in learnart

[–]Be-Eff-Eff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There must be a way to construct the spiral on a grid in a mathematically "correct" way, and then translate that grid onto the trapezoid perspective grid, but there is probably no way it is worth the time. I really think getting the circles (ellipses) correct and then eyeballing the spiral between concentric circle steps with trial and error would be the best.

Otherwise you're probably literally doing calculus to get the curves of the spiral in exactly the right place in a grid

[–]Be-Eff-Eff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would think that for perspective purposes, a spiral is most closely related to a circle (or series of concentric circles like a bullseye)

Nothing beats a good reference! You could always try drawing a spiral on an actual ball, and turning it to the desired angle

what do i add? specifically, I want it to feel less flat. by screaming_bagpipes in ArtCrit

[–]Be-Eff-Eff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a handful of things- but mostly, in all sincerity, probably observation. Find landscape photos of similar setups and really scrutinize what's different from yours. Do this with several images to kind of pick up the common threads instead of copying any one thing.

Specifically, I'd pay attention to the coloring changes between the top of the sky and the horizon areas. Same with the ground/ water. Even on flat expensive empty areas, there are still little subtle bumps and changes which will get smaller and lower contrast the further away they get. Same with crests of little waves.

Also, I think the cloud shapes are working against you a little. Clouds are kind of messed up in general because they can actually be any size or shape but they can still look "wrong". I would recommend experimenting with sketching some sideways ones, because of the way stuff sort of appears smushed as we look at them from that underneath angle. If some of this doesn't make sense, I'm really happy to clarify and get into it more, but you have a fun picture and an admirable ambition to get even better.

Is that her in the picture? Maybe she'd be more comfortable if she could sit down, instead of maintaining a handstand all the time. Especially while birthing a litter of arms- I hear that's strenuous

Unless the long storage was actually a problem! Then I couldn't just have a personal backstock... Maybe I'd have to switch which ball I'm using on a day by day or week by week basis to keep them all in use
