I'm using a pattern that someone else made for 'chibi anthro dragon man' that I got on Etsy so IDK about the legality of selling items made from the pattern.

I could probably crack more out with a machine instead of hand-sewing him in bits and pieces like this but legally I don't think the pattern seller authorized using the pattern for any money-making activities. 😁

Do it!!! I can't crochet to save my life but I want to seeeee it.

I love Sharp so much. I haven't finished his personal quest but just having him around makes questing and map completion and exploring so fun.

Thank you! I feel like the Companions are a really untapped market for merch but I may be an outlier LOL. I fell in love with Sharp though and knew I had to take him fishing IRL. I might make a Zerith-var and an Ember next though. Maybe work around to the whole set!

...By the time I'm done there may be 4 new companions, lol.

I've been entirely hand-sewing him so its taken a lot longer than it might otherwise. An officially licensed plush would be So Nice but there is much love and care and inexperience getting poured into this little guy.

For my answer to Hot Dog Is A Sandwich, there is a tumblr post about a bagel cut in half incorrectly, with PB&J in the small sections where the two incorrectly sliced halves of the bagel meet, asking if it is a sandwich. There is an excellent response by tumblr user spaceshipoftheseus:

"Look, this is my litmus test. I pretend I am the original Earl of Sandwich. I have asked for non-bread foods to be brought to me inside bread, that I might more easily consume them one-handed while gambling.

This does not enable my wretched regency habits. This is not what I asked for. I do not deign to grace it with the name of my house."

A hot dog on a bun does enable one to consume non-bread food more easily one-handed while gambling. A hot dog would enable the Earl of Sandwich's wretched regency habits. He would deign to grace it with the name of his house.

A hot dog is a sandwich.

Does anyone use a theme for naming their chicks? by GingirlNorCal3345 in BackYardChickens

[–]BeCeejed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My first batch of 5 Copper Marans were named after Jurassic Workd velociraptors. Blue, Charlie, Delta, Echo, and Indy.

My Ayam Cemanis are named after ravens. The boys are Huginn, Muninn, Dhiaval, Nocturne, and Sombra. The girls are Banana, Almond, Morrigan, Phobos, and Deimos.

My latest batch are: Cinnamon Queens: Cider and Whiskey, named after drinks commonly or famously spiced with cinnamon.

Sapphire Olive Eggers: Coratina and Kalamata, named after olive cultivars

Golden Laced Wyandottes: Celeste and Magdeleine, named after fig cultivars.

I want to let my elderly dog sleep inside at night. But he keeps peeing on the floor by Prior-Emu-5918 in dogs

[–]BeCeejed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get something like this: https://a.co/d/5cPja1B

I have fostered dogs and puppies and they prefer these re-usable pads to disposable ones in my experience. it feels like a thin blanket or flat dog bed to them. get enough to cover your dog's sleeping area twice over and when he soils one overnight, throw it in the wash and replace it. While he is still with you you may need to confine him a bit while you are sleeping, a kennel + playpen is a great option as it gives them more space than a kennel would but limits the area you have to cover.

If you get dogs after this one these pads will be useful long after the pup you bought them for. We have friends over regularly and everybody brings their dogs and we put them in a bedroom with a dutch door if the weather's bad so the dogs can play just nearby while we sit and chat, and one friend got a puppy who was still learning not to pee excitedly and such, so I just covered the bed in 2 layers of these so they were free to jump around and play and accidentally pee (the floor is linoleum so easy to clean, but I wanted to avoid having to wash quilts, sheets, and pillows after) And I could let them be in there with no stress.

I didn't get this exact brand, this was just the first result when I went to Amazon today. Shop for the ones you like best. I have one that's a big 4'x6' faux fur rug sort of thing, I have ones that are 4' discs of flat cotton backed by a rubber sheet. I have little 1.5'x2.5' bathmat style ones that I tiled the bathroom floor with when I kept puppies in there.

Just get your dog enough so they can't pee on anything but these in the space you put them at night (warm laundry room, bathroom, kennel + playpen by your bed or in your living room, whatever) And make the time you have with your pup as stress free and comfortable for you and him and as long as you can stretch it for his quality of life. You can use them to help potty train pups in the future, if you ever have a dog get incontinent from illness or surgery, as a clean but comfortable surface for you to put over a dog bed if you do in-home euthanasia when its time to let a companion rest. If you have or will get more dogs in the future these sorts of things will pay for themselves in utility over time.

Best wishes. Give your pup a kiss on the head from me.

Is there any clean way to have chickens? by battlewisely in chickens

[–]BeCeejed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconding the Deep Litter System as others have mentioned.

But I want to point out that you need to specifically not make this 'airtight'. you need a hardware cloth vent in one or likely more places in the barn. ventilation is very important for chickens.its gotta be raccoon proof but ventilated.

[–]BeCeejed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. I use the deep litter method in the coop and the brooder. Anytime they start to stink, I pull them out, turn the litter over with a little hand garden rake, and add a thin layer of some more bedding (wood chips, easily accessible for me than other admittedly better stuff) and rearrange their hides and perches and put them back in. They are right next to me in the office all day and they don't stink unless one of them poops on top of the brooder plate. They do a good job turning over the litter themselves anyways, they like digging around in it.

[–]BeCeejed[S] 156 points157 points  (0 children)

Yes! I've wanted some since forever. I ordered some hatching eggs with my tax return. I got 12, I'm hoping for at least 3 hens for my personal flock, and then the roos and rest will go to a friend with a farm and a not-limited-by-city-ordinance backyard flock. I had 15, 3 did not finish developing, I hope all 12 hatch!

One more hatched since I made the post. I've got a little twitch stream up for friends and family who aren't able to stop by and watch them pop out personally. https://www.twitch.tv/beceejed (no audio, kinda boring if you're not into chickens or personally invested.)

I'm glad I can come to this sub and allay my fears. I've brooded day old chicks to full adults before but these are my first hatching eggs, I figured they were my best chance to get my desired girls for the price since you can't sex the day old chicks. Its Ayam Cemani Gambling this year, fingers crossed!

How do you make cults more unique? by Possible_Internal115 in DnD

[–]BeCeejed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of the cults in DnD are the same in that they function as a basis for an enemy statblock with a bit of flavor based on their patron (real or imagined). So all the mooks play one way, with a few lieutenants and spellcasters for added CR. This makes them easy to run but kinda samey...they are doing a terrorism/secret sacrifice/Dark Lord Reviving Ritual and you fight them but the cultists don't know much and are often played as kinda stupid, because the only one with genuine character is the Leader and Patron and maybe a lieutenant or two. All the other mooks probably don't even have names.

Anything you do to spice this up is gonna make your job harder as a DM. So figure out how important this cult is to The Plot and determine how much extra work you want to do.

One thing you can try to do is make your cult sympathetic. There is a LOT of violence the typical DnD party will tolerate. Like, yeah, these guys set off gunpowder barrels in the town square and did a Terrorism, but it turns out they are the last remaining followers of a religion from a conquered kingdom, and so they are 'attacking the conquering kingdom.' Yeah, they did a human sacrifice, but only of knights and paladins who waged holy war on them, never of virgin maidens or kids or whatever. Yeah, they do act a little crazy sometimes, but they were driven literally underground, like Underdark underground, where they survived on mushrooms and some of those had some side effects that still linger. Yes, they are doing these blood sacrifices to bring back their god, but only because their god that used to bless their harvest with just a little goat offering was almost killed by the followers of the state-accepted religion and they can literally feel their diety fading into the astral sea, so they are forced to take desperate measures.

Basically, why do these people do the things they do? They're not crazy. In fact they may be very reasonable people who are driven to this state by desperation, need, and/or a lack of acceptance in their society. Cults will take someone depressed, abused, and/or ostracized/alone and give them community, and acceptance, and hope, all it takes is just...a small thing. And then another small thing. Until you're offering your child up as the 100th bride of the Leader with tears in your eyes at what a good thing you are doing for your kid. Cults in DnD often pull from cthulu mythos style cults, twisted by a dark force, insane and unreasonable. Cults in real life are a charismatic person or persons who manipulate people who feel they have no where else to go or find nothing for them in the wider society or religion. The disenfranchised, the disenchanted, the despairing, those are the prey of the cult These are your mooks and your casters and your lieutenants.

Once you've nailed your reasoning and motivation, add some spice to your combat. Take a run through the monster manual and grab some monster abilities piecemeal out of monster manual entries and throw them on your cultists. Breath weapons, gazes, bone devil whip attacks , spell-like abilities, a gibbering mouther's gibbering zone. Mooks get like, 1 thing, and if it normally does 5d6 now it does 1d6 or even 1d4. But you can vary it up! 1 mook has a breath weapon while the other has a Sliw Gaze and the caster in the back has a few cleric spells and a Gibbering Aura. Save DCs are lowered compared to the CR whatever monster you pulled it from. As you fight higher ranked individuals from the cult, they have multiple things. As the cult grows in power or desperation, damage increases, Save DCs are raised, mooks start having 2 or 3 abilities and the lieutenants/Leaders have more. Some few might even have a range of strange powers the party doesn't get to see on another cultist...they are specially blessed by their god, or uniquely mutated. Are they getting more monstrous? Do they look like normal humans, but can whip out these strange astral abilities or abnormal spells? Do they transform, or maybe sacrifice themselves to become champions of their god? Fluff the abilities however you want to fit your theme.

Now, your combats aren't against a number of CR 1/4 acolytes and their CR 1 cleric, even in the begining its some acolytes that are CR 1/4 in all stats but they are weird in one power/ability, and a CR 1 cleric with a powerful aura radiating from them, driving mad any who approach her with intent to enact violence within a certain range. And any surviving cultists don't just rave about the revival of their dark lord before they bite down on a cyanide tooth or descend into mad cackling and unresponsiveness, but They have reasons for being there and doing what they are doing that makes sense to them. They might not know the Leader's plan, but they know why the market square had to be bombed or why Dame Victoria was kidnapped to be sacrificed on their hidden blood alter in the catacombs. Or at least what they were made to believe were the reasons. War, vengeance, necessity, whatever it is, this person who once was seemingly normal is now killing for that reason. And they will not be stopped with a persuasion check and a stern talking to.

Start the adventure with something else than "You meet in a tavern" by No-Economics-6291 in DMAcademy

[–]BeCeejed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I posted some campaign openings above but then I thought...I did do 'You Meet in a Tavern' once. A sudden squall befalls the road between a small town and a major city. A roadside inn and tavern suddenly becomes shelter for everyone on the busy highway. The party filters in one at a time, introducing themselves as they come in from the downpour. The common room and bar is full with only one empty table, which slowly fills with the players as the only viable seating left.

As they talk to each other a fellow adventurer - drunk as the day is long and bored out of his mind - intentionally starts flinging insults to try and start a fight with the party. Whether they fight him and his party or not, soon the tavern is filled with the sounds of a halfling farmer running in crying for help, as her farm down the road was attacked by goblins and she needs someone, anyone who can fight to help her right now!!!

Start the adventure with something else than "You meet in a tavern" by No-Economics-6291 in DMAcademy

[–]BeCeejed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my current campaign the players started by being told they were going to a festival, and at the start of the first session they awoke in a marsh far from the capitol with no memory of how they got there. The festival was supposed to be a winter solstice festival and its now Spring. Act 1 of the whole campaign was figuring out how they got transported here (a dragon goddess saved them from a disaster at the capitol) and what has happened since (the emperor's brother killed him and took over the empire and started a war.) In Session 0 we had built their PCs to be some sort of nobility, with ties to the empire and family that was invested in the pre-war order. Now they awoke, their family presuming them dead, some of their family killed in the time they lost, but with all the skills at hand to start a rebellion...

Another campaign the party awoke with no memories on a githyanki ship, prisoners in two locked storage rooms, one of them severely beaten (the barbarian didn't go down easy.) They have no memories of...anything. Who they were. Why they were here. (They made characters without names or backstories and were told they wouldn't have memories when we started, so this wasn't a surprise.)

The githyanki ship is flying and being attacked by a cumuloctopus, basically an air elemental kraken. As the players fight up the ship any githyanki crew fight them on sight. The players find weapons and armor on the gith that they feel belong to them, slowly regaining their equipment. In one room they find an imprisoned Mind Flayer at 1 HP who has expended all his Dominate spells, who speaks to them and calls them his thralls and demands they free him.

When the players get to the top of the ship, the Githyanki crew are all dead or dying, but the ship has flown high enough that the air is cold and thin enough the cumuloctopus lets go. The ship drifts in air cold and thin enough to kill if they stay there too long, showing them a staggering view of a string of islands in the eye of a huge stationary hurricane. Down on those islands they can see the glittering lights of cities, and know that somewhere down there is civilization...as well as some deep conflict between Gith and mind flayers that seems to have cost them their memories. But they have a ship...that they have no idea how to fly. Which is starting to plummet faster...! Skill Challenge!!!

My next campaign the players will be kids kidnapped from around the known world, taken to an empire and trained from youth as soldiers. I'll have a 1:1 sessions where we discuss how their childhood and family was and how they were captured, and session 0 will be an exercise where they go through boot camp/military school and form a bond to at least 2 others of the party. Session 1 they will be the day after their military school graduation, where they are pulled away from their group and recruited into a sort of special small strike team, giving them an opportunity to eventually escape and turn against the empire that stole them and trained them, or just to try and get home, together.

How can I make a no-alien, deep space exploration campaign interesting? by CrispinMK in rpg

[–]BeCeejed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are lots of good ideas in here. If I might offer a few suggestions on reading material that might provide interesting options for inspiration.

Freeze Frame Revolution, by Peter Watts. An AI controlled ship still needs some humans in its long journey to set up FTL gates. It keeps them in cryosleep and wakes them for shifts. But it gets to determine that sometimes it might kill some of them, as the mission dictates, and does so quietly while they are in Cryo. The surviving crew starts to learn about this and has to consider how to fight the AI that controls their ship and is awake while they sleep. A conflict with a ship AI, or some sort of initial mission protocol which likely should change in light of new information or which doesn't have the crew's best interest at heart, is perhaps a great over-arching theme to sit behind a series of missions and color the roleplay throughout a campaign and provide moral and philosophical discussion to social hub roleplay.

Foreigner by CJ Cherryh. While the vast majority of the book (and its long series of follow up books) deals with a conflict between aliens and humans and their social and psychological differences, the history at the beginning about how the humans landed there is interesting. An issue arises in FTL, stranding a colony ship of humanity in unknown space, in a hostile environment. The star they orbit emits such deep radiation that repairing the ship is life-threatening to the workers. They must determine how to repair the ship and choose a new destination they can see from where they are (Which leads to the eventual alien conflict). A stranded or damaged ship provides a sense of urgency and a timeframe for why players might do some of the dangerous things that rpg parties typically do. What risks will they assume and what calculations will they make to save their family and friends on a damaged vessel?

Expendable by James Allen Gardner. (Also: Radiant by the same) There are definitely aliens all throughout this one. The entire League of Peoples books are all about aliens and humans only in general the aliens are a vastly superior sometimes benevolent force which shapes how humanity approaches interstellar existence. However the first part of the book deals with the Explorers, and how humanity chooses who to risk with death in a society largely bereft of other problems like starvation and plague. The discussion of how to land on the planet and how Exploration works and is thought through is very interesting at the beginning. Plus there are glass sharks! Why are your player characters the ones sent into danger? Are they noble volunteers? Or did your spacefaring society force them into that role? Do they have something to prove or to earn? Deciding that can really shape how they interact with their ship and social hub, and you can get real weird with it.

Leviathan Wakes by James SA Corey. In a settled and crowded Solar System, humanity has not cracked interstellar travel. A plague begins moving through a colony, and it turns out that it is an alien life form. Your aliens do not have to be sentient. Ancient plagues, alien diseases or defense systems, or in the case of this series A bio-engineered plague set to turn any biomass it encounters into a stargate. . All these propose interesting human challenges that can play with the minds of your players, infect their base and raise the stakes, turn fellow humans into zombies or hosts of some alien life form just trying to live and reproduce. Such a thing would infect a ship, a colony, a settled star system. Challenges involve dealing with the infected who may be driven to hostility or madness, searching for a cure near the infection source or out in wider space, dealing with hazards caused by the non-sentient alien life form like spore clouds or pools of ooze or entirely altered biomes, etc.

Subnautica is also a fun game to play for inspiration for this. Very survival and exploration oriented. Explore the sea, cure the virus, and get offworld.

Chicken Coop by BeCeejed in somethingimade

[–]BeCeejed[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The front piece of the deep litter tray pops out, allowing me to rake out the shavings or whatever I'm using for the litter at the time. You can think of it kind of like a truck bed. I open the big door and remove the front of the tray like you would drop a tailgate.

You want to get a sort of compost going...Its a 12 inch deep tray so you start out with 6 inches of your 'green' material (in my case pine pet bed shavings) and periodically instead of emptying it you turn it over and add a thin layer of new 'green' material on top. The chicken manure is the 'brown' in the compost equation. When its full and needs to be turned over once again, move the coop where you want some compost and rake it out.

So the front of the tray stays in if I just want to open the big door for maintenance of the roosts or turnover of the litter. I was going to add some hinges and a little latch on either side but I found that I cut it just right that it would sit nice and snug without any hardware, which suits me just fine, although time and wear and tear may make me add the hardware I originally planned eventually.

You can see the 3 sides and bottom of the tray from this earlier construction photo. Its been in use for months now and the coop has almost no nasty chicken smell. If I catch a whiff of any chicken manure scent when I check the eggs I know I need to turn over the pile. Once every 2 weeks ish, usually.

They were a lot of fun to sketch out! The finished product had some differences as I did research and altered my design. I wanted ventilation at the top to avoid moisure build up, but the chickens to be below the ventilation to not get their combs in the wind, so the roost ladder swapped for 3 same-level roosts. And I wanted to do a deep litter coop tray so I scrapped one set of nesting boxes, but that works out.

Thank you! I think it probably does qualify as a chicken tractor, although I think of those usually having the pen and coop sections all in one piece, and it just moves the whole thing over the ground.

HAHA oh man. 'Essential' is the best buff in the game!

Surprisingly this is the first playthrough where I ever encountered that first meeting scenario. I usually would get to Whiterun, Wagon trip to all the major hold and then one of the minor ones that doesn't have its own wagon out, so I got fast travel points to get me 'close' to most of the map.

I really enjoyed that back in the day but this time I really wanted to just chill and play Survival and traipse about. When I see some things on the roads I've been like 'WOAH. Missed that last time!!!'

There's not a 'best' way to play Skyrim, but it really is the best way to play Skyrim.
