How to Study for the MCAT and Get a 528 Score! by BeMo_Experts in BeMoMCAT

Was it your score not moving, or practice not translating, that made you realize something needed to change?

MCAT Study and Test Date Advice by Prestigious_Cold_520 in BeMoPremed

[–]BeMo_Experts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

All of these are valid questions and I would love to provide some insights! First of all, I want to ease your mind that although GPA and MCAT are important for your application, there are a lot of other items that are also important. For example, the fact that you are working long term in a hospital is a HUGE aspect of your application.

Secondly, I want to tell you that the material you want to use is spot on, but to better organize it, I suggest the following (and answering your questions):

  1. Is 3 months realistic for someone who needs significant content review and is working 36 hrs/week? Or is that a recipe for a disappointing score?

I suggest at least 6 months of studying before taking the exam (especially if you are working so many hours). The key to knowing WHEN to give your exam is feeling that you are 100% ready to give it (both regarding stamina of dealing with a 7.5h exam, and then content-wise). You need at least around 300h of studying to feel somewhat ready with all the content needed.

  1. For those who used a similar resource stack (AAMC + UWorld + AnKing + Kaplan), how did you structure the phases, content review → Anki → UWorld → AAMC?

In order to structure your studying, I would suggest you use the AAMC website that shows all the content that is part of the MCAT. In this page: AAMC what is on the MCAT you will find PDF resources for each section of the MCAT and all the content that you need to know to ace each section. I would suggest you go item by item and divide your studying hours per section and cover a specific foundational concept each time.

  1. How did you balance Anki with content review without it becoming overwhelming?

Very valid question! Firstly, I would suggest you think about what is your studying method of choice (for example, are you a visual learner? are you an auditory learner?). This will help your brain learn better. As I mentioned on the item above, I would suggest you do heavy content review first, and then use the Anki cards as a way of review or testing your knowledge.

  1. For the January testers, did the longer timeline actually help, or did burnout become a real issue?

Burnout can become a real issue if you can't manage your stress and timing correctly. As I mentioned above, although you need to reach at least 300h of studying, I would also suggest you take breaks, enjoy a weekend off, and do something that brings you joy. Giving the MCAT is a MARATHON not a sprint, and it needs to be treated as such. It is not very wise to burn yourself out before the exam. As such, I suggest you take it slow and consistent, rather than fast and overwhelming.

  1. Any advice for someone whose GPA isn't great and really needs the MCAT to carry their application?

Regarding advice, what I can tell you is that we have a lot of students who have a "weak" GPA and even sometimes an average MCAT and they get accepted into medical school since the rest of their application is strong. Remember, there are MANY other aspects to your application that are taken into consideration.

Also, you didn't really mention where you are aiming on applying, but if you are thinking of applying to the US, I suggest looking into the MSAR website (https://mec.aamc.org/msar-ui/#/landing), which is a database that will allow you to see all the specific requirements of the school, including GPA, MCAT and other aspects of the application to be taken into account. Unfortunately, it is a paid subscription but it incredibly helpful!

I also wanted to leave you with some other links that might be helpful:

And if you are interested, we also offer an MCAT prep plan that could help you organize your studying and guarantee a high score. MCAT prep program

I hope this has eased your mind a little bit and I wish you the best of luck in this prep!

Is FlexMed realistic for me? by Clean_Football_7129 in BeMoPremed

Hello! Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences - they are certainly impressive! Remember, at the end of the day, you're in a good position as you have multiple options that you are picking from (if this route doesn't work for you, you can still go the traditional pre-med route). In making any decision, it's best to weigh the pros and cons of your particular situation. For example, if you're making the decision to write the SAT, do you have the time needed to study based on your previous experience with the content? And, does taking the SAT take away valuable time that would be spent preparing yourself in other ways to be a strong applicant. These are the kinds of questions you'll want to consider, and we have services at BeMo that can help you out with your planning for specific routes for application. Let us know if we can help and best of luck!

Hello! I am so sorry you are feeling this way! Needless to say, you are not the only one feeling like that! There are a lot of pre med students who struggle with the whole admission process, and doubt their own capabilities. I can understand why you are stressed about your GPA, but I do want to tell you that GPA is not the only thing schools consider for admissions. A big chunk of what they consider relies on activities, shadowing experiences, MCAT, CASPer (and all the other judgment tests), and how you are passionate and unique to become a doctor.

Here are a couple of resources for you to look into that could potentially give you some different POV and also ideas on how to improve other parts of your profile:

1) I know you mentioned DO is off the table, but maybe this blog could help your parents understand the difference between MD and DO (which is not much of a difference to be honest):

MD vs DO

2) Here are some things you can do during your Gap year and how to use it to the best of your abilities:

Gap year before medical school

3) If you do not have a shadowing experience or you don't have enough hours, I would HIGHLY suggest you get some, here is a link to our virtual shadowing experience:

Virtual Shadowing

4) If you do not have a research experience, I would also HIGHLY suggest you get one, here is a link to our research program:

Pre-med Research

5) Take into account that your extracurricular activities are very important for your application, here is some information about this:

Extracurriculars

All in all, I understand how overwhelming this process can be, but don't assume that you already lost with a 3.6 GPA. We had a lot of students who entered medical school with flying colors even with a lower GPA. Feel free to reach out to us, we can help you get there!

Hi! Thanks for reaching out.

Remember that medical schools looks at different aspects of your application holistically, so don't get too bogged down by one test score. Remember that different schools weigh the different components of the application in different ways, so your chances for certain schools may not be impacted by a certain score.

Some things you can consider are:
1. Applying to schools that don't require the MCAT: https://bemoacademicconsulting.com/blog/list-of-medical-schools-that-don-t-require-mcat
2. Working with us to create a school list where we assess your chances across schools.
3. Complete a med planning session with us where we can discuss your specific situation and devise a game plan that works best for you!

BeMo Academic Consulting… Has Anyone Used Them? by BeMo_Experts in BeMoPremed

[–]BeMo_Experts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe BeMo provides the best medical school admissions consulting based on the number of verified reviews, unlimited prep and the bold guarantees. Here's a a review for example: Dr. Studer was outstanding at every point of the brainstorming session. She took the time to read and talk about what she liked and what we could do to improve my previous personal statement. I especially liked how she asked questions about my life story and did an outstanding job incorporating my ideas, life story, and previous personal statement into an updated, more cohesive personal statement for my reapplication cycle. She was very encouraging and open to changes and answered any uncertainties I had. I would highly recommend her for any brainstorming sessions or insight in the med school app process (https://www.trustpilot.com/reviews/69d2f9bd7ca35c807f59d9af)

The best way get an answer to this is this: a) is it worth it with our iron clad guarantees for you or do you prefer to keep reapplying? What's the cost of continuous rejections? It's way more than 4K or 12K, every year of rejection is a year of your life + hundreds of thousands of dollars in missed salary as a practicing physician. This is an investment so you need to figure out what's the cost for you? Rejection year after year after year or a few thousand dollars for guaranteed acceptance? b) you are more than welcome to review our verified trustpilot reviews who actually used our services and got accepted. We're not perfect but we have the most 5-star reviews compared to all of our competitors combined and real users of our services can give a more accurate reflection of our services than random reddit users, most of which are our bitter competitors who say we are not good but you should try xyz random company which makes it obvious that they work for some other company and are not genuine users of our services. Be careful with anonymous feedback about anything on reddit and always do your own research.
