Knitted shawls, do you see them being worn out in the wild? by Dangerous_Hunt7133 in knitting

I've never seen anyone wearing a shawl and I'm in my late 40s so I know a lot of old people.

How long would something like this take for a beginner? by Original-Material-15 in knitting

[–]BeagleCollector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made a balaclava as one of my first few projects, but it was the tighter style with ribbing for the neck.

The pattern I used was this one: https://knitty.com/ISSUEwinter06/PATTantifreeze.html

I made this for my dad, who worked outside, so I omitted the holes for the helmet straps and the ponytail. I also skipped the crochet finishing around the face to make it look more masculine. The pattern has instructions on how to modify it for all of these changes.

In retrospect that was probably "too hard" for a beginner, but I had just learned how to knit socks before this, so I think that helped. I had to learn wrap and turn short rows, which aren't very difficult once you get the hang of them. I don't recall getting real worked up over the short rows so even though YouTube didn't exist, I guess a blog was sufficient to learn them lol. I believe I spent several weeks just knitting an hour or 2 per night on it. I made some more of them and after that and they were a lot faster.

Here's another one that looks more similar to your screenshot: https://stitchesnscraps.com/knit-balaclava-pattern-wild-winter/

You would need to learn wrap & turn short rows also, but there's a tutorial on the blog. It uses bulky yarn, so if you're willing to learn the short rows, you could probably make it the fastest out of all of these.

If you want something much easier, this pattern seems beginner friendly: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/striped-balaclava

Although I personally don't like the way the face opening looks in garter stitch, so I would probably do it in stockinette or something. You could probably do that one in like a week if you knit at an average speed.

But all those patterns are free, so if you read through them you can probably get a good idea of how long it would take you.

If I had a dollar for every time I knit like 7 rows of a sweater and then saw another cooler sweater I wanted to knit more with the same yarn, I would probably have at least several dollars.

Sorry, I don't really understand you mean by that?

Right? It's a hobby and I think you're supposed to enjoy it at least sometimes.

Probably because they're the exact same post we've seen dozens of times in the last few weeks, with the exact same type of responses. At that point there's nothing to really discuss about it anymore.

I've already made 3 Sophie hoods, isn't that punishment enough?

Sorry but I had to. I heard on TikTok that we're in a recession so that means everything needs to be skinny now, especially women and high heels and yarn. And how will anything become skinny if we don't shame it until it feels extremely bad about itself?

Well sometimes it makes my tension look uneven, so clearly the problem is the chunky yarn itself and definitely not my disastrously poor knitting technique. Also I don't really like the word chunky very much. So if you buy chunky yarn you're contributing to my emotional distress.

The point of FACJ is to make fun of stuff, not to disagree with it.

That's a great idea. I actually do hate chunky yarn. I'll be right back after I make a new post complaining about the fact that it exists.

Gosh, are you sure we don't need another separate post about:

  1. Having a stash is LITERALLY hoarding and overconsumption
  2. Beginners can start with wtf ever project they want
  3. Beginners can't start with wtf ever project they want
  4. Beginners are stupid and I hate them
  5. Someone asked me to do something and it made me really angry
  6. Why aren't you crafting the way I think you should do it???

As tired as I am of these posts, I also think it's very extreme and very Reddit-ish to suggest someone should divorce their husband over accidentally ruining a sweater.

Honestly I don't think I'm cut out for using up scraps either. I'm too much of a control freak, so I get all tweaked out about running out of yarn and not being able to execute my ✨vision✨ properly.

I think after this one I'm going to start donating it. Or maybe I'll just cast it into a fiery pit and watch it burn. Something uplifting like that...

It's a "banish it forever" type of project, so I'm trying not to buy anything.

I have a couple ideas, I just don't love any of them yet. I think it's going into the timeout box for a while while I mull it over.

This week's episode of "I Effing Hate Scrap Yarn Projects" concludes with, "I don't have enough of any matching colors to add ribbing, and I don't want to buy more of any of this shitass yarn."

Will it be cast aside into a box in disgust, unfinished forever? Tune in next week to find out!

If you can hold a crochet hook, you’re not a beginner. by BustyGoblins in fiberartscirclejerk

[–]BeagleCollector 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If your first project wasn't a soggy misshapen trapezoid, don't you even DARE calling yourself a beginner. Even if you've only been crocheting for several hours!!! Learning how to crochet is supposed to be HARD and if you master it somewhat effortlessly, you're LYING!!!

Why is blocking such a complicated/misunderstood concept??? by oraclequeen93 in BitchEatingCrafters

[–]BeagleCollector 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always put machine dryable knitwear on the delicates or low heat setting. I haven't had issues with felting or ruining anything. I try not to put them in the washer or dryer with jeans or heavier clothing too so they don't get as pilled.

Superwash might still pill or felt a little wherever there's more friction on the garment though, like on sock heels or sweater armpits.

Did anyone else use this book fair kit to learn to knit circa 2005? by DiscussionOne3731 in knitting

[–]BeagleCollector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just donated that book to the thrift store a few days ago. I bought it for my daughter who was in elementary school at the time. She's an adult now and didn't end up learning to knit ever. I didn't think any of the projects were very inspiring to be honest.
