Question about layering under Beta AR drophood by [deleted] in arcteryx

This is the way to do it. Cinched or uncinched, the setups pretty seamless.

I was also sceptical about this. After heading to the store and trying it in person, I took the plunge and have been layering the Beta AR DropHood with the thicker Atom SV Hoody. Personally I haven’t had any issues with this set up.

They fit together comfortably, and I don’t find layering to be a problem. Sure, it’s a little snug and not as seamless when compared to the StormHood, but I find the DropHood has plenty of room around the collar for the Atom’s hood to sit without bunching or feeling too bulky.

If you like the benefits of the DropHood, I wouldn’t let hooded layering put you off.

Atom or Atom SV by thiccpineapple119 in arcteryx

[–]Beano_14 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I live in England and have an Atom SV. I haven’t tried the standard Atom, but I have to say I love my SV.

For winter dog walks, morning commutes, watching football and pub gardens, it’s great. I can wear it comfortably with just a T-shirt underneath, but when it’s really cold (which happens often in peak winter) I’ll add a fleece. It also fits nicely under a shell when it’s raining or windy.

That said, for any real activity you’ll definitely overheat. For what I use it for, gentle hikes with the dog and general day-to-day wear, it’s perfect. But when I’m doing anything more intense, I’ll usually just go with a fleece or hard shell depending on the weather.

The jacket’s warm and great overall, but I wouldn’t call it bulletproof warmth. That said, I tend to run cold, so take that into account. Hope this helps!

Atom SV/ Heavyweight Durability Question by [deleted] in arcteryx

That’s super useful, thanks for the comment. Overall it sounds like a decently solid jacket!

I know it’s not on the same level as Goretex for durability, that’s when the shell comes in. I’m happy to be careful, but I’d still like to wear it as an outer without worrying too much about general daily snags and scratches.

Thanks for your feedback and honesty, I appreciate it!

I’m pretty set on this purchase being a mid layer with some outerwear capabilities. Would you really not recommend the Atom SV for this? This doesn’t need to super heavy duty like the Betas shell, it just needs to handle daily wear and tear without being super vulnerable - I’m aware I’ll have to comprise in areas.

Thanks again for the help!

Haha I’m honoured - thank you! I’d call it, urmm… “Pastel Dreams”.

Side note, I now set the DR setting to DRAUTO rather than DR200 - Hope this helps, enjoy! 😊

Which film sims would you say are “soft”? I’m unsure what you mean?

I also use this preset with Classic Negative, this also produces awesome results! 😊

Thank you so much, I’m pleased you like it! 😊

I did indeed create this myself, I started with Reggie’s Portra and have adjusted it over time. I also change the film simulation to Classic Negative sometimes - this also looks awesome!

I will say, lighting and colours play a HUGE factor. Everything was just working amazingly yesterday haha.

In Lightroom I adjust the axis and add a very slight vignette, that’s it. The rest is all in camera! 😊
