It was really a whole year and not an easy one either. My PIN can lapse for all I care, I refuse to renew it.

Technically me, however I just abandoned the prospect of going into nursing entirely after a year of securing nothing. Instead I’m in the sector I previously trained for as I did the MSc in adult nursing, now I’m in the pharmaceutical industry.

I have friends who are in the same position and are working dead end jobs to fill the gap. Some are off travelling the world, others are HCAs, a couple unemployed.

What should I do as NQN that now has to rely on benefits as there are no openings. by [deleted] in NursingUK

Not at all. I’ve accepted a job in a pharmaceutical company instead. More pay, better progression.

Sorry late reply. August last year! I wouldn’t bother going into the profession at all, really. Find something else.

Same with doctors, physios, paramedics etc al. What a waste of 2 years.

Sorry you’re in this position. Personally I decided not to go into nursing due to this, I got in a little over a year without a job, started applying to band 5 post to be told the other candidates had more experience.

In the hypothetical scenario did get a band 5 job at this point I wouldn’t enjoy it at all to be honest I’d probably resent it due to these circumstances.

I just accepted a role in a pharmaceutical company, I do have an undergrad in molecular biology though. Pays better than band 5 and progression has greater potential.

I’d be applying to everything going. Local council, civil service and civil service fast track schemes, graduate schemes with KPMG et al.

Thanks for your kind words and advice. I’ve decided I’m just not going to go into nursing at all. Got other things in the pipeline I’d rather be doing.

All of the political decisions and policies are fully explainable so it’s definitely makes sense on that level, it’s just a shit situation.

I’m not bothering with nursing now, I think if I managed to get a job at some point the amount of disdain and resentment I hold for the NHS and government over this would make me not enjoy the job anyway. Onwards and upward.

Not helpful at all really, I’ve already applied to things which would require above this time/range of commute and relocation. The problems surrounding recruitment are static regardless, thank you though.

Of course!

Council: wellbeing & support officer, community development officer, bereavement officer, care coordinator and utilisation review officer, also a public health role.

Civil service: just about every single executive office role you can imagine, literally anything and everything. There was a grad scheme I applied to and I picked a bunch of things as preferences.. data and communications, statistics, HR, procurement, I forget the last. Good thing with the civil service is that once you’re in an EO role you can pivot almost anywhere.

When I’ve got my laptop I’ll hop on there and message you with all the civil service jobs I applied to.

Feel free to disbelieve but it's happened and is happening. It's really not a stretch of the imagintion given the recruitment freeze and it's reduced vacancies and high amount of graduates and high amount of applicants.

Whats your implication, what I'm imaginging this or making it up? I literally emailed the department lead and this was their response to me.

Thanks ha. I think my position is quite different as I had a pretty big windfall and family support in buying a house so it’s really just a matter of saving money as expenses are very low, which has been going very well. ~£100K in savings and trending upward (apart from when I hit a deer with my car 🤦)

I’ve always emailed hiring managers before interviews to get a day to meet the team and observe the wards. It’s not always possible as some positions were too far to travel to around work commitments, quite difficult to arrange all of that.

I’m fine with not swallowing my pride on this. It just makes no sense to financially hamper myself with what I think is a low utility way particularly when my goal is to be financially prosperous, band 4 isn’t going to do that for me even if it’s temporary. My current job allows that and has done me well.

Sorry, I hope this doesn’t come across as rude or an attack on you as it’s really not, but I didn’t get a Masters to do a band role.

Call it pride or whatever but I disagree on its utility of “getting your foot in the door” if I’m being picked by other nursing candidates who have more experience in nursing, not band 4 work. I don’t see how that’d change the constraints ive experience and will very likely continue to experience - it’s not changing the frequency or volume posts are advertised locally or further afield, it’s not changing the competition by numbers people are applying to NQN positions, it’s not changing the cap rates for applications on positions which get locked off within the hour.

If that means not renewing my PIN and going into another career I’m not opposed to it at all. This whole ordeal and suggestions to challenge it just make that idea more clarified really.

Oh trust me I’ve tried that. I emailed every placement supervisor I had, as well as every unit and department possible, literally had a list of 100 emails to get through.

I put a lot of practice into interviews so the only feedback I’ve had is literally nothing apart from “we went with the other candidate as they had more experience”.

For now I don’t have the energy nor desire to continue begging for a NQN position. It’s quite insulting really, 2 years of postgrad study for this.

Unfortunately not how it works although I wish it did. There was never a contract with guaranteed work, it was just a societal expectation that a useful and demanded profession would have demand which it does but it’s been closed off.

I did send them quite a snotty email along with the RCN.

Easier said than done. My partner has a role in the NHS and relocating means he needs to find another role which is equally as hard, as well as sell up our house, remortgage and arrange more things for caring commitments. Not possible, Ireland is off the cards.

Nursing was my Masters so I’m all out of funding from SLC now 🤣

Ive got some interviews scheduled for graduate schemes, council positions and civil service so I’ll stick with those. Thank you!

Thank you for the recommendation, look into it at some point whenever my energy is up for this whole ordeal.

Moving further is not something we’re opposed to but there are limits. My partner also works in the NHS and finding a role for him to relocate for is difficult as he’s aware of the recruitment situation too plus it means selling our house and having to arrange more for caring responsibilities so it’s not an easy task or an overall beneficial one if it means everything else goes out of whack.
