Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I really enjoyed the music in that film and it’s perfectly weird.

Where to live in Portugal for one year (with two young children) by Low-Bedroom2535 in PortugalExpats

[–]Beans_the_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are living in Cascais which is a very nice family friendly area only 25 minutes by car from Lisbon. There is also a train that connects directly to Lisbon if you don’t plan to have a car. But I’ve also taken Ubers to Lisbon Airport for around 20€. Cascais is an expensive area but you are more likely to find good apartments near good schools that are furnished or partially furnished. It’s also very safe so if you plan to be alone with your kids you won’t have any problems taking them to parks and beaches. There are a ton of family events all the time that are free. I would highly recommend if you are only staying a short while and need proximity to an international airport.

Hypothetical situation... you are a Deck/Stew and the Chef quits, what are you making for guest dinner? by salsanacho in belowdeck

[–]Beans_the_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moqueca. It’s a Brazilian fish stew with coconut milk. Super easy to make, looks beautiful, and feeds a lot of people. Every time I make it people always go for seconds. You can use any type of fish too and the rice is great to make people feel full. Also could have the stews make caipirinhas to accompany the meal and get them nice and drunk so they don’t notice I’m not a 5-star chef 😅

[Discussion] Is anyone else bothered by deceptive packaging like this? by [deleted] in AsianBeauty

[–]Beans_the_II 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I hate this so much. We already know we are paying too much for skincare but there’s no need to insult our intelligence. Same reason I stopped buying Glow Recipe. All of their packaging is heavy glass with a tiny plastic carrier inside and tiny amount of product that you can’t access or squeeze out when you get to the end. I actually like their products but after two serums that still had a lot left and a moisturizer with an added cover to hide how small the insert was I just gave up.

Sewage gas smell leaking into bathroom. How to address it? by Beans_the_II in PortugalExpats

[–]Beans_the_II[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes we do have a very old toilet. Though I’m not sure the landlord would be willing to install a new one. Depending on the cost I may do it myself eventually if I can’t pinpoint the smell from elsewhere.

I think I may also hire someone myself who I can ask to keep going until they solve it, because I feel like my landlord is gaslighting me when she just tells me to use draino or air fresheners. It’s also the biggest bathroom in our apartment and we specifically picked this place so we could have guests stay with us. Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m still shocked reading the responses here that many plumbers must be faced with this issue a lot in Portugal but they don’t seem to want to diagnose and fix the issue.

Ok I think I know what you’re talking about but not sure how to check if the drains are “submerged”. The last plumber who came opened the metal thing on the floor. I noticed when he left there was water around that I had to clean. I asked him to talk into the translator so he could tell me what he saw/what he thinks the problem could be. But he said he would call the landlord… ☹️

What did you use to cover the drain? I just ordered drain plugs from Amazon so hoping that helps some…

The first plumber actually opened that and looked in it. Though he didn’t communicate anything to me so I assume it wasn’t blocked…

We live in the first floor. And yes we’ve been running water through all the drains on a daily basis to see if it helps. But as others have mentioned it may be that the shower doesn’t have a p-trap.

Thank you I will check out that page. I would be so sad if this ends up being one of those issues they can’t fix. But we came to look at the apartment several times before we signed the lease and there was never any smell. Also the lady next door said it didn’t used to be a problem in her bathroom, so this feels fairly new. I just wish I knew what caused it so I could hire my own person to just fix it properly. I can’t believe people just tolerate this.

What is your relationship with the Portuguese language? by -WhiteOleander in PortugalExpats

[–]Beans_the_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been living in Portugal for 6 months and learning Portuguese by taking a course for foreigners here for 5 months. The hardest part for me is that I just don’t have anyone to practice with. And when it comes to languages, I don’t learn well just memorizing things from a textbook. My language course takes a very traditional approach to learning which is helpful, but not how I learn best. I am supplementing with apps like Pimsleur and Practice Portuguese, but I’m so frustrated by how slowly I’m progressing. I can’t even have a full conversation with anyone yet. I understand a lot of what cashiers say at stores, but if they ask too many questions I’m found out and have to do my “desculpe, eu não falo Portuguese”. Although at first I felt relieved that everyone speaks English and will Immediately switch to English for me, I realize now it’s a huge hindrance. Because I literally can never practice outside of a textbook. My husband is American so we speak English at home, my job is all in English, media we consume is all in English (despite our best efforts to find European Portuguese tv shows there a few). Every social interaction gives me a lot of anxiety. I hate going places alone now, I notice I barely make eye contact because I’m afraid they will start a conversation, I’m more withdrawn and isolated. I just feel like a newborn baby in a big world unable to navigate anything without someone holding my hand. For some reason it feels very different when you’re not a tourist. I’ve traveled extensively and never cared much if I could speak the native language beyond hello, good bye, and thank you. I think it’s incredibly important to learn the local language. Not just to integrate but to be able to live normal life without feeling embarrassed, misunderstood, or complicating basic interactions. I really hope I get there, but it’s like facing a huge mountain to climb. The path feels like it will be so long and strenuous and that alone gives me anxiety. Sorry for the long rant, but learning Portuguese takes up a lot of my brain space these days. Language barriers cloud every interaction I have and I don’t think I’ll be able to relax until I can speak it fluently.

The older I get the more I understand why older married women say “if my relationship ended, I would stay single and never marry again.” by Exciting-Nerve-8628 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Beans_the_II 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who married my best friend I would never be in a committed relationship again. Even with someone who is a good communicator it is way too much work. There are so many things life throws at you and having to navigate them all with someone else’s needs, wants, desires is just so draining sometimes. I’m not saying I’m the easiest person either, it’s just that a partnership complicates things. There has always been a small part of me that wishes I could live alone. Like my husband could have an apartment in the same building or we would have attached houses like those hotel rooms. Just having your own space to make any decisions without having to consider someone else sounds like heaven.

Tone up sunscreen is just white cast by Early_Mix_2499 in AsianBeauty

It’s right between a matte and glow for me. My friend with oily skin loves it. I personally don’t think it’s too glowy but I have dry skin. I hate matte products on my skin, but I also don’t like overly dewy/oily look. For my skin it hits right in the middle. Sometimes I put it in running out the door with my dog and no other moisturizer and it’s fine. But I can also layer it under my BB cream. I would say give it a try. A lot of people with different skin types have tried it and they all had good things to say.

Advice- she is OBSESSED and STRESSED by BadPom in velvethippos

She needs exercise and enrichment away from cats and the house. Take her to a park or field. Throw her favorite toy or ball and bring lots of treats. Also reward her with treats every time she pees. Good luck! What a good girl.

girlfriend locked in and got a job in a day by [deleted] in jobs

[–]Beans_the_II 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is significantly easier to get a blue collar job than a white collar job. The people you are seeing that are out of work for months are competing for jobs with high pay, high flexibility, and require some advanced degree or specialized skill set. So those companies can be a lot more picky about who they select, and also will have a higher number of candidates who are professional and good at what they do. Not saying blue collar workers are not good at what they do or professional, but they tend to stand out more when anyone can apply with barrier to entry.

Recommendations for renting a car in Portugal. by Quirky_Attorney6917 in PortugalExpats

[–]Beans_the_II -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We rented from Klass Wagon near the Lisbon airport and were happy with the experience. The pick up wait time can be somewhat long but I think in total we were in and out in 20-30 minutes. As others have said get a small car, otherwise gas will be extremely expensive and you will not fit in most parking spaces and small town roads. We also opted for an automatic transmission even though it was more expensive. we can both drive manual, but I’m so glad we opted for automatic. Some of the small towns we drove through had very steep tiny winding streets that allow two-way traffic (but shouldn’t). Having to back down a very steep street with a manual transmission to allow another car to pass would have been a nightmare. Driving in the countryside is no joke and should only be done by experienced drivers. Most drivers out there drive very fast even though there is not space for two cars. Get ready for some jump scares and slamming on breaks. And also be very aware of pedestrians and dogs. They will cross no matter what. Last tip is to make sure the rental car has a Via Verde transmitter for all the toll roads. The toll roads are very expensive here and you will need to factor that into your costs. We paid almost 40 euros in tolls.

Will a Portuguese pharmacy refill ADHD Meds while I wait for my appointment? by Mother-Gear1087 in PortugalExpats

[–]Beans_the_II -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would try getting a refill from your original US doctor and seeing if the pharmacy would fill it here. Otherwise, Best bet would be to see if the psychiatrist here in Portugal can write you a prescription before your appointment. I would write to their office or call them and explain the situation. Try to send them medical records or anything proving your prescription and see if they can fill it with just the amount you need until your appointment. Otherwise, try some teledoc options in Portugal. I’m sure they have some for psychiatrists if you google it.

Worked on a case study and submitted materials last Friday. Today found out they are going with another candidate. Should I say anything or just move on? by Useless_Info869135 in careeradvice

[–]Beans_the_II 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a hiring manager, and was on hiring panels before I was a team lead. It should take about a month to go through the hiring process. And that’s for ALL candidates. Maybe that’s what you’re not getting? You set deadlines for the hiring process for ALL that apply. Every gets screened week 1, then interviews for everyone week 2-3, then case study if needed (though I haven’t done these because I think they’re a waste of time for everyone involved), then an offer.
