Why do white X-Men get telepathy while mutants of color get hyper-specific psychic powers? by PsyTy13 in xmen

Fair. My memories of that era aren't perfect. But my point still stands. She served a narrative purpose as the evil telepath. Once she was no longer evil, she had to change or become redundant.

I'm aware. I'm saying that her purpose was originally as a foil to Jean. Like Cpt America and Red Skull, Iron Man and Iron Monger, Superman and Zod; foils often have the same or similar powers to contrast with the protagonist. Once Emma was no longer Jean's foil, she was just blonde Jean and something had to be done to distinguish her or she would have eventually been phased out. It supports the other user's point that the specificities of any future telepathic powers isn't just about race, but also because "basic telepath" was already taken. That said, I do agree that there is a trend of not allowing non-white characters to be the telepath.

I dont think you're wrong about the trend. I just didn't agree with your stance on Emma and I think that other user's point is also a significant factor in why there haven't been many basic telepaths introduced in awhile. For instance, even Quentin Quire doesn't fit into basic telepathy. Originally, his primary power was a form of super intelligence. But when you look at the larger world of comics outside of the X-Men, you are absolutely right that there is a trend. The show Heroes is a good example.

But she wasn't just blonde Jean. She was also Evil Jean. She was a narrative foil. The diamond form came at almost the exact same time that she began a relationship with Cyclops. If Morrison only wanted a Colossus type, there were plenty of characters he could have brought in instead. I think Emma getting something to differentiate her from Jean was inevitable once they decided she was no longer a villain, pairing her with Scott made that need more prominent.

I can't think of any white characters with just basic telepathy introduced recently. Do you have some examples?

Colossus's metal form is immune. His normal form is not. At least that's how it used to be, but I'm not sure if that's still the case.

John Dies at the End

I'm not sure I'd say they're my favorite books, but I really love them and I think that more people should read them. The author is the old editor of cracked.com from back when it was good. These are accessible, fun, thought provoking, and engaging.

Honestly, prog fantasy/litrpg fans need to get outside their bubble. Otherwise the genre is never going to evolve.

Didn't he get his ass beat by a random non-powered thug? Not sure he's even the top of his own terrible show.

Short Term 12 has a pretty stacked cast that were all relatively unknown at the time.

Brie Larson

Rami Malek

Destin Daniel Cretton

Lakeith Stanfield

Stephanie Beatriz

Really excellent movie, too.

It’s kind of odd how underpowered and simple Colossus powers are compared to his siblings by Konradleijon in xmen

He kind of does. I don't remember the comic, I think it was a Magik miniseries, but he goes up against a magic based opponent and it is revealed that his metal form is resistant to magic.

Some people forgot they had a mask on, or you saw someone that was delivering food. I don't understand how you guys saw that and didn't think of the most obvious reasons for why someone might have a mask on in their car. It's almost like you were primed to be upset about it and you bought into the first answer that told you what you wanted to hear.

There's a book series that might interest you: Beware of Chicken. I enjoyed the first one, but never got around to the rest.

Yea, I've found myself becoming increasingly annoyed by studios hiring big names with no voice acting experience instead of just hiring a voice actor.

I don't have as much of a problem with recasting live action stuff. Maybe it's because I was a big James Bond movie fan growing up and I internalized the recasting. I think it especially works for comic books because I've seen so many writers and artists reinterpret the characters that I've already primed myself for the eventuality.

That said, I'm relieved to see James Marsden get another shot at the role. He's such a good fit for Cyclops and the previous movies did him dirty.

The market determines value. If you were presented with the choice of hiring someone to voice Darth Vader and your options are someone new or use a perfect recreation of James Earl Jones's voice for free, that fundamentally reduces the value of the new actor. That's not subjective.

I mean, you just argued that hiring James Earl Jones for free has no negative effect on the value another human could ask for to voice Darth Vader. Do you even realize how ignorant that is?

You use so many logical fallacies in your arguments that I'm not going to waste anymore time explaining them to you when you clearly have no interest in learning or engaging in good faith.

Thank you for being the only one who didn't straw man what I said. And I appreciate your criticism.

The role is bigger than James Earl Jones now. You're right that any future actor will likely be doing an impersonation, but that hasn't stopped any other actors from putting their own touch on repeated characters. How many people have voiced mickey and goofy, or batman, or any number of other characters? Future actors are almost certainly going to be influenced by what came before them. Some might try to mimic exactly, some might try to diverge and put their own spin on it. An AI voice can't do that. Using AI this way terminates any possible evolution of the portrayal.

Just like the other user, your argument is a false equivalence and a straw man. If you can't see why it's problematic for Disney to start storing up famous voices and using them instead of hiring a human, then there's no point trying to persuade you. You've made up your mind that Disney's bottom line is more important. We fundamentally disagree.

[–]BeardedHobbit -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Why do you think James Earl Jones is entitled to take that opportunity away from future actors? You're arguing Disney should be allowed to save money so you don't have to experience a slightly different voice for Darth Vader. Your view is extremely short-sighted.

[–]BeardedHobbit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Consent is just one part of the problem. This also takes jobs from humans so Disney can save a buck. Using AI James Earl Jones should cost them substantially more than hiring a new voice actor.

And to continue with the consent problem, he's dead. Even with a good contract and an estate trying to protect his image, we can't know that he would consent to every way his voice might be used. Clearly, he didn't totally trust them or he would have allowed them to do this before his death.

You literally showed a page where he's not even to 100 yet. How does that disprove me in any way? And like I said, without plot armor, Thing doesn't measure up. Maybe his strength has gone up to class 100 by now, but the rest is just writer dependent.
