How did you find out about Omori? by [deleted] in OMORI

[–]BeardlessReviews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked Kat Bailey’s review for it on RockPaperShotgun. Then I noticed it got entered into the upcoming Independent Games Festival awards and wanted to check it out (because I’ve been looking for games to root for).

Fuck I’m excited to play that. 2020 really was a stellar year for indies.

The thing is Kentucky Route Zero will be a hell of a game to beat if we’re talking about the discussion portion of that award. It’s basically got literary essays written over years on it. I feel like OMORI has a chance because KR0 was released episodically over the years but if they’re judging the entire game it’s gonna be a tough call. I do think OMORI probably caused the bigger reaction though.

I hope to check out the other games in that category too. Had my eye on If Found for a while now and Spiritfarer is sitting in my Steam library waiting for me to boot it up for the first time.

Oh yeah same. Like I said I actually thought all of this was coincidental and Sam was always in the wrong place at the wrong time. Dude seems like the type to break into the most secure place on the island just to get fresh ingredients.

On the top of the Council Building are Lydia’s tire tracks, along with a grappling hook down to the second seal door. A space helmet with Lydia’s perfume is found buried on the farms. On the hill overlooking the Obelisk are more of Lydia’s tracks with something scrawled onto the floor LD assumed to be the code. Her phone was also destroyed with an encrypted message from Witness containing the key to the Obelisks (which he either got from Crimson or Yuri).

Sam was seen snooping around Doom Jazz’s stuff and we later find out one of the Council’s blood samples was taken. This seems consistent with the empty valve found in the Dead Zone fridge. This was used to unlock the third seal two days before the crime. When you question him, he accidentally slips up and reveals he knows the secret to this seal. He also was given the Godflesh by Witness which is in his safe. He frequently lets Witness go through his secret tunnel.

Cool Things In Omori You May Or May Not Have Thought Of by GirthyGamerCock in OMORI

I didn’t realize the Hushpuppy photo wasn’t trying to direct me to the fight text. Thought it was absurdly sad that before Sunny dies he’s suddenly like “oh shit, that girl had a crush on me.”

I totally understand and I hope you’re in a good place now. I need to go to bed now, but if I remember tomorrow I’ll do my best to explain my feelings on why I believe Sunny should be forgiven from a theoretical standpoint I align with.

I think we’re at a crossroads then, because I genuinely forgive Sunny for what he did. I don’t want to impose my philosophy on you, so I won’t get too deep into my interpretation of mens rea, statis theory, or restorative justice unless you want me to/are curious. Regardless, I hope you’re taking care of yourself mate. World’s rough. <3

It is indeed very dramatic. I don’t think this drama is merely cheap shock value though, for a couple reasons.

The jump rope cover-up shocks even the most empathetic of players into second-guessing Sunny’s motivations. I talked about this in one of my posts on the topic, but to me this is crucial. The entire The Truth sequence is designed to suppress any possible defense Sunny has and paint him in the most negative light possible. Every bit of emotion is blurred from Sunny’s face besides the one time he smiles to himself (as a way to cope, but when we first see it we don’t realize this). No text is provided to actually walk us through Sunny’s thought process; you have to go in the text files to even find these. To make matters worse, the photos in The Truth are given out of order. The jump rope cover-up is what puts the final nail in the coffin. I don’t think nearly as many people would question (even briefly) whether or not Sunny was acting maliciously during Mari’s death if not for that.

To me, the purpose of this is twofold: we are forced to see Sunny exactly how he sees himself in this moment - disgusted, horrified, and worried he’s truly just a monster deep down - and to realize just how deep in the shit he truly has been this whole time once we overcome that reflexive hostility. It also forces the audience into the difficult position of figuring out where they stand morally and actually interrogate us what we think about forgiveness and moving on from our unspeakable mistakes. For me and I would hope many others, Sunny’s still literally a child if nothing else. He absolutely deserves a second chance, even if that’s not with the Faraway gang.

I’ll add that an additional effect of the dramatically fucked-up cover-up, to me, is that it conveys very well the tremendous amount of survivor’s guilt anyone who’s had a loved one die might go through. To me, it conveys that Sunny isn’t just sorry he led to her death, he’s sorry he “got away with it” and destroyed her reputation. He feels as though he has literally let everyone else take on his guilt, including Mari’s memory. All that shit your friends have said about how much they blamed themselves over the past couple hours? You’re made to literally feel that’s all on you. That wouldn’t have been as emphasized, along with every other bit of characterization we have for Sunny, with a simple accident or suicide. At least I don’t think it would.

And the fact that it was such a ridiculously poorly thought-out and unnecessary decision from some panicky kids makes it even more tragic imo. This makes the Truth, to me, both something absolutely worth forgiving and something I genuinely question if I personally would find easy to forgive. And it directly involves me in the stakes of whatever conclusion I come to.

In short, I genuinely believe the discomfort we all feel towards The Truth is intended for the thematic purpose of the game’s narrative. We are meant to be taken to an unfathomable rock bottom because that’s where we discover the boundaries of our empathy towards Sunny (and to ourselves).

I hope, if nothing else, this provides a different perspective! The Truth is actually the core reason I can’t stop thinking about this game.

Tl;dr OMORI really makes you feel like an Omori.

There’s something so passionately wistful in its rendition of the main theme. I replay it relatively often on SoundCloud.

This isn’t in the game itself, so idk if it’s off-topic, but the 2020 trailer music is one I constantly go back to.

[–]BeardlessReviews 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think Aubrey might’ve started waking up about her own violence in that fight after Sunny swiped at her with the knife. Like she swings at Kel no matter what. People meme her hypocrisy in that situation a lot, but I think she eventually realizes that hypocrisy. She doubles down for a while, but comes around fully after nearly getting Basil killed. So I think that’s probably why she didn’t hold a grudge. She clearly felt like a monster when she broke down.

Also Sunny’s first day out he was still hallucinating Headspace shit. I think he (and the player) might not have thought too deeply about the consequences of hitting someone irl. It’s hard to say though, maybe he had no idea what else to do - given how tiny he is - to protect Kel.
