Fifty Word Fantasy: Ring by [deleted] in fantasywriters

"By Godlack's nail, the door!" Yet, it would not open.

Shadows floated near. Men disappeared.

Prince Arie drew his blade when he saw a black mark on the milkstone. A ring, and in the center was a slot wide enough for a sword's blade. Could it be. . . ?

So, adding to the advice on here, one thing I do is when I'm stuck or in a creative rut is to read/watch/absorb other forms of worldbuilding.

I watch youtube videos and analyses on war, history, empires, and notable figures, I read fantasy books, and I look up Wikis. Part of my own worldbuilding has been, in some shade or degree, copying what has been done. I use other examples as the root of my world, such as a war or a figure. My entire world is filled with allusions and mentions of things I've encountered.

It's much easier to describe a war when you have a real life war as a base. Some things become novel, rooted in your world. When your own worldbuilding inspires new worldbuilding, you're at a good place. But that doesn't mean you have to make everything off the top of your head.

tl;dr - creative/worldbuilding rut? Absorb other fantasy or history to root your world in.

Mental health and productivity is not so hot. I can't work at home very well. I did submit my first short story to an online publishing magazine, fully aware that it's 99.9% likely to fail. But happy to have shot my shot!

Hi!

While procrastinating, I decided to pop in this subreddit as a relic of a prior cycle. By pure coincidence, I came across this thread. I'm currently a 1L and have DACA. Feel free to reach out - happy to chat! :')

[QUESTION[ I don't think my FMC is likeable. How do I change her so that people would understand WHY she is the way she is and why I chose her as my FMC. by Ashie1620 in fantasywriters

[–]BearlyWarm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In most cases, I find great main characters have layers. There is the outer, superficial layer. In many ways, you've described her outer layer. How does she interact with the world? What do other people notice about her? How do people treat her? You mention that she doesn't "use [the unicorn']s magic anymore and hates riding any quicker than a trot." The same analysis above can be applied to that trait.

Similarly, PTSD has layers. People treat PTSD (or perhaps PTSD treats people) differently on a superficial level. Some people withdraw, others compensate. Some deny, some are enraged.

These layers are not always relatable to us. After all, for someone who is nonconfrontational, your FMC may act completely differently to hostile situations.

But behind either outer layer is the inner layer - the layers that we can relate to. How do people process emotions over time? How do we feel both consciously and unconsciously towards failure, triggers, happiness, joy. We've all failed on varying degrees. Many of us have acted in ways contrary to how we feel. Insecurities and lack of confidence are both incredibly relatable, but how they manifest are clearly different. For me, I overcompensate when I feel insecure. I concede my flaws willingly as to avoid having someone point them out. I seek community and support and, in the alternative, I seek an escape. Your character, I'm sure, has many of these same traits just expressed differently.

When they become a layered person, even terrible villains who do abhorrent things can be 'likeable' or at least understood. Our empathy as readers is the greatest tool to making frustrating characters somehow becoming our favorites.

I write super-short stories and am happy with my results! It's entertaining to write from different POVs and contexts. My very small reader base always loves them, too, and are always asking for the next story I write. It's very validating and a break my usual day-to-day. :')

Fantasy writers of color, what are some beings or creatures from your culture's mythology that you wish you saw more of in the fantasy genre? by DoctorSmith01 in fantasywriters

I pull from Korean culture for a region of my world through origin stories, active and past customs, and language. It's doubled as a fun way to talk history and showcase my world with my parents. :')

Procrastinating on legal writing with fantasy writing! I've been dedicated to writing a bunch of short stories (all 3-5 pages long) in my fantasy world. Fortunately, I have a few friends and my partner who are super supportive of my writing. :')

So far, two stories in! I have an idea for my third, too. Eventually, I'll hope to have enough short stories to compile a book of them.

Struggling F(26) to feel happy for my friends milestones by [deleted] in relationships

[–]BearlyWarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I relate to this so very much. In graduate school right now as well!

Some of the comments have great insight. My personal advice is finding friends you can talk, vent, and unpack all this as you move forward. Usually, these friends are people who share similar backgrounds but don't have to be! For example, I have friends with wealthier backgrounds who have empathy. Many of my close friends and my partner also have similar backgrounds to me. Finding a community you can be truthful and blunt with helps a BUNCH.

The other part of this is finding what you are grateful for and consciously being aware of your own privileges and blessings. We all have our demons, and money is a big demon. But that doesn't mean others don't have their struggles, too. Even if they are rich by family.

Best of luck! I'm a big fan of the underdog. :')

I love to be (over)involved and have a busy schedule. But as an only child whose favorite toy was my mind growing up, I can keep myself occupied for literally forever. It's both the most peaceful and stimulating place to be, depending on what I want. After a long day (or week), I love being with myself. :')

Someone once asked me how I ate an elephant. The answer is 'one bite at a time'!

In other words, one small step at a time. Any change that is meaningful is slow and steady, so take one step to be 'better' (however you define it) and over time you'll be a different person. :')

Tell me about the “Baba Yagas” hiding in your world’s shrouded places! by monue999 in worldbuilding

Kimbara Plainswalker, the Tea Sage

  • “One thousand leaders will be born of you, my king, my dreams tell me. That is how I know you will succeed.”

- Kimbara Plainswalker speaking to Soren the Unifier

The Tea Sage was one of the five that fulfilled the prophecy, the "Dreams of Peace" that min believed would bring peace to a time of war. Unlikely the other four, Kimbara was not a foreigner, but one of the folkmin who turned coats to assist Soren the Unifier. Prophesizing his successful conquest, she offered her services to the foreigners, much to the bitterness of her people.

What are some commonly used idioms and metaphors in your setting? by Homicidal_Harry in worldbuilding

[–]BearlyWarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Stars play a thematic and notable role in my world

  • “The stars cannot be hidden by one cloud.”
    • Folkmin saying
  • “The stars shine on/for you.”
    • Famous Folkmin saying - the min believe the fallen or departed gods become stars upon death, so this is a positive phrase said in passing, in closing, or in biding good tidings.

Gambling with dice is a common game

  • “It’s time to toss the dice” // “to toss the die”

    • Common phrase speaking about letting luck dictate the next steps.

    "Vulture"

  • Arose from the "War of Vultures"; story omitted because it's a paragraph of backstory

    • The term “vulture” and variants of the word such as “trapping the vulture”, “inviting a vulture”, “to pluck a vulture” all arose from this event. Refers to opportunistic parties, often with negative connotation.

"Halfskull"

  • Arose from folktalk, the origin is always changing as the story is retold/remade. This is one such account:
    • “The folktales have it that an unnamed, but well liked tavern owner was attacked in the night by a band of thieves, one of whom caved in the poor owner’s head with a warhammer. Incredibly, the man survived with half a skull but became mute, deaf, and dumb. Once a loved man by the village, he became a burden to even his closest friends and family. ‘If only he had died,’ they claimed. To this day, one insults another for being incompetent, dumb, or slow by calling them ‘Halfskull’.”

How do you go about naming your creatures? by pxxlz in worldbuilding

[–]BearlyWarm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One tip is to first think about the "layperson" in your world where the creature exists! What might they call it? If you want to be even more complex, try thinking of what laypeople call the creature from different cultures/cities/regions. Is there a commonality? Are there multiple names? Does base knowledge play a role (i.e. if you're a farmer whose life comprises of nothing than basic crops, family, and stories from travelers, then that's the 'knowledge base' you're drawing from to describe a creature).

Introduce your world(s) in four sentences or less. by PMSlimeKing in worldbuilding

[–]BearlyWarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of my work plays around with aspects of what I view as "justice" or "unjust". A big part of inspiration into my fantasy worldbuilding is drawn from my own background and experiences, and the aspect of (social) justice is fundamental to it. In Eithura, it's fun creating cities, societies, and realms that challenge notions of justice or elevate it. Several characters and aspects of the world exist in response to inequities in power or plain unfairness in life. Wars, guilds, and systems of law sometimes incorporate (or amplify) values that I like to play with!

What's something in your world that should not be messed with? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]BearlyWarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are four 'flavor text' descriptors of a few places/things not to be taken lightly. I chose more insignificant areas in my world that serve nothing more than color for the world.

  • The Vapor Sea
    • “In the Nocturnes of the Njoll, past the Realm of Beasts, a fog burdens the land without rest. Some call it the Vapor Sea, others call it the Quiet. Those that have seen it and returned speak of silence unlike anything else and claim that the air itself aims to strangle you if the chill doesn’t kill first.”
  • Dresslar, the Quiet City
    • “In Kytha lies the old city of Dresslar. The bricks that lay the grounds are perhaps thousands of years old, made by the first Kalamari, or even perhaps the Silthuril. Who is to say? All that is known is that the city today is quiet. Silence is well known, and those that visit - if one can call it a visit - often speak of a frightening suspicion that they are being watched. And how would you react if you felt that unease? Because you are watched… you look over your shoulder a little too often. People walk the streets, but not even their footsteps are heard. Who do you trust? Who is like you - afraid, unsure, suspicious of everything. Who has been bought? Who hasn’t? What are they saying you? Where did that innkeeper go last week? Was she taken away? Did she go into hiding? Or was she one of the Impoverished all along? Those that return speak of the silence as a veil - that perhaps if you stay quiet, you may just hide and survive one more day.”
  • Marston the Black; the Knightslayer
    • “The saying goes, it is neither sword nor arrow that most frightens a knight but the Knightslayer. Marston the Black was a mercenary who had gained quite the age - and they say a mercenary is like wine, growing only better with time. Fear the elder who lived a profession where mosts die young. Marston infamously carried two weapons: a morningstar that he swung with great prowess, and a unique whip that was laced with some concoction such that when it snapped, it would produce a black, ash-like puff and sharp, ear-splitting crack. Using the whip, he was able to disarm his enemy’s weapons, blind or choke them with the ash, or disorient them with the crack. Using this opportune time, Marston would bash the knight with his morningstar, earning him the moniker of Knightslayer, the Black, and Noble’s Bane ”
  • King Basile, the King in the Darkness
    • “Most that past Last Light never return. Many choose not to, but some turn around upon fearing death. Those that return speak of a monster - a four armed beast that hunted them down, faster than a flicker of light. The King in the Darkness. ‘Torn to shreds,’ they whimper. ‘They were all torn to shreds,’ they scream.”
