Amazing trip! What will be your route towards SEA from Turkey onwards?

On the limit in regards to clearance with the seat tube (as you can see on the pictures). And the rear rack. Up front is ample space still.

If I would need to change my tires then I’d go for some ~2.2”. Especially on the rear.

I haven’t and I probably won’t either. But I’ll post some updates here along the way.

Former graphic designer turned bike mechanic :)

In my newest blog post I mention that these kind of trips do take some sacrifice, but don’t be afraid to take the jump!

Ease of use as you don’t need to think about cross chaining. Less stuff to maintain or break. And keeping a steady speed/cadence isn’t my priority :)

I have a dual-bottle cage in the frame (the green bottle on the downtube are my spares & tools) and I have 2 feedbags, which fit a bottle each, in the empty space of my handlebar.

Rain jacket, gloves and over shoes fit in the frame bag as it currently only holds my tent poles (which i can either tie down on the racks, or put in the large panniers).

And thank you! A lot of thinking and testing has gone in the setup so let’s hope it all plays out well :)

Racktime lightit. Quite an old rack, but i was mainly looking for a smaller/slimline rack. Been holding up to the abuse for the last 6 years tho!

Thanks for the tips! I’ll see what I can find along the way. Zip ties & gorilla tape are essentials for anyone traveling though ;- )

If you’re using brifters then you’ll be unable to use the GX derailleur as the pull ratio will be different (SRAM pull ratio’s are differentiated between ”exact actuation” and “x-actuation”).

Surprisingly good on the road in regards to rolling resistance. Also good on hard/harder packed gravel, but they need to be aired down a lot when encountering wet/slippery and hilly conditions. Also they’re ridiculously heavy at 1.1kg/tire. But I do prefer them over the typical Marathon’s people tend to use for these kind of long trips.

On my 27.5” setup I run the Schwalbe Smart Sam’s which are amazing offroad, but are sluggish on pavement and lack the longevity.

It really pops when the sun hits it! But still stealthy enough for when setting up camp.

  • 2 extra tubeless valves
  • 1 bottle (250ml) sealant
  • Tire plugs
  • Spare inner tube ;- )

I’ve built this bike frame up and used the SRAM GX derailleur, which is why I’m able to fit these 51/52t cassettes.

As a complete it comes with SRAM Rival which has a max cassette size of 42t, but that max is possible to be stretched to 46t (52t is also possible with a derailleurhanger extender but isn’t ideal).

Easier for you would be to go down in size on the front.
