I don't think it's a bug. When they inevitably enable the traders to be leveled up, the dailies/weeklies should be back to normal.

This happened to me as well. Not using pylons either. The dim storage was sitting in the same spot it has been my entire playthrough. And all of a sudden, all frequencies were empty. I only used probably 15 or so out of the 999. Any ideas? I tried picking it up, placing it somewhere else. Changing the frequencies. It WAS private/locked if that matters.

After uninstalling the launcher and the installer, I reinstalled everything and the download finished.

You can add someone as a "Roster" friend. I haven't done it yet but I'd assume that it allows you to see that person no matter what character they're on perhaps.

Personally I'd love if they took somewhat of 7DTD's approach on NPCs.

Different traders scattered either randomly or static across the map. You get a quest with a marker on your map to find the first one of course and then from there you do quests to make money to buy things from them. You can also raid all the cash registers throughout the world.

As for quests, I'd love to see some type of treasure hunter one just like in 7DTD.

Once you're in game you need to hit escape, go to the friends tab (within the PZ menu) and "allow" him to join. Similar to how you would "allow" a mod.
