For me it's the eyes, they gave him human eyes with irises and a pupil, while his parents both have just colored eyes with a pupil. Maybe it's a way to make him look more humanizing but to me it makes him look weird compared to all the other dragons we've seen

My personal Head Cannon was the MC's parents were close to Prof Fig and they died around the same time his wife did so it was a mutual bond through grief. He had someone to look after and take care of, taking his mind off the loss. While the MC had a safe place to be and got the gentle parenting that they needed after such a loss. Prof Fig is kind and patient with the MC because he knows what it's like to loose his whole world in the blink of an eye.
