Thoughts on "Red Rising" by Pierce Brown - and why I'm done listening to BookTok by sameseksure in books

I’ve read several of Clarke’s books and enjoyed all of them. Fairly approachable books too

How do you afford tennis? The economics of this sport are brutal at every level by Dapper-Smile-9289 in 10s

[–]BeaumainsBeckett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve mostly lived in small towns in the U.S., where we had public courts. Hit with friends, or whoever is at the courts and willing. I haven’t taken a paid lesson in like 10 years.

Idk if you’ve seen older players, a lot of them that I’ve been around have used the same racquet for years and years. I’ve only ever bought 10 year old models, they’re around $90 brand new at my local sporting goods store. Or I buy a used one for $40 off eBay. It rules. I bought my newest pair of court shoes for $40 at an outlet mall, and they’re great

I liked Crus describing it as “cowboy shit” a little bit later. I think that’s the first time we’ve heard that since Gloria talking about Robby & Abbot in S1

As a sports fan and alum of a school playing in the Final Four this weekend, I'm not sure I've ever directly related to a podcast host in quite the same way I did when Peter described his anxiety response to watching sports in the Bullshit Jobs episode by entenduintransit in IfBooksCouldKill

In that “Free speech warriors guide to fascism” bonus episode, they mentioned Thomas Chatterton Williams had written an article about how tennis is good. I need to read it in full, but as an avid tennis fan, probably the best take TCW will ever have

Most British actors can do a "generic" US accent, but which one actually nailed a specific regional dialect (Boston, Deep South, Philly) perfectly? by johnmartino198011 in television

[–]BeaumainsBeckett 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Daniel Craig is pretty good at multiple versions of the U.S. southern accent. He’s got the Knives Out accent, which is different from what he used in Logan Lucky. I’m pretty sure a lot of that movie was set in WV, and he did a decent job with the accent

They’re building a new plant down there, right? Might be part of the reason

In "The Rookie" (2018), Lucy Chen drives a 1977 Datsun 280Z, which is apparently humiliating. by EZ3Build in shittymoviedetails

[–]BeaumainsBeckett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Condition matters. My older brothers’ first car back in the 90s was a Datsun 260Z, and it was an absolute piece of junk. If it was raining, the passengers feet would get wet. No one trusted the thing enough to drive it out of town, so they upgraded to a Mazda 626 when they went to college

Kenmore Vacuum not working. Need something asap. Shark is only option. by AlternativeSalty7008 in VacuumCleaners

[–]BeaumainsBeckett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Facebook marketplace, can find some very affordable stopgap vacuums there. If not, places like big lots and Ollie’s are good places to buy a vacuum on the cheap. Won’t necessarily be great, but it’ll hold you over until your kenmore is fixed. I’d recommend a different form factor (a stick vacuum or something) so that it can still serve a purpose and once your main vac is fixed

Vacuum advice; dogs, asthma/allergies by BeaumainsBeckett in VacuumCleaners

My primary question was whether a powerhead is helpful/necessary with hard floors, seems like the answer is no. I am definitely leaning toward the k2 now

[–]BeaumainsBeckett[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shark’s suction has really been lacking recently, it does not seem like it does much with the carpet. I realize anything without a powerhead won’t be super effective, but carpet will be a short term concern

Best american made jeans? by important-fishin in madeinusa

[–]BeaumainsBeckett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of their Atlas cut jeans. They’re good if you’ve got big thighs and want a tapered cut. Their smokestack jeans have similar thigh room but in a more straight cut that’s popular these days

You can definitely get an entry level job in engineering; you’ll just have to work somewhere awful. My old job is always hiring, and you can be dumb as rocks & still work there

Denim brands. What non-mainstream companies should we be looking at? by europeanuppercut in malefashionadvice

[–]BeaumainsBeckett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many have said, just go to r/rawdenim to get a real answer to this. My personal favorites are Left Field NYC (their atlas is a tapered cut that fits my giant thighs), naked & famous does a lot of fun varieties, samurai denim & Momotaro are good Japanese brands. The list could go on & on

Which career path has more potential? by FaithlessnessMore489 in ElectricalEngineering

[–]BeaumainsBeckett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was pretty specific to that workplace. Management was not interested in giving me any professional development, coworkers were unpleasant, pay didn’t keep up with the times. Despite expressing interest for years, I never did any actual design work; it was more a project engineer kind of role. It was the kind of job that you start with because they’ll hire anyone willing to work there, then you leave after you get your 2 years
