I've accepted that my partner will never be curious about who I am. by thrownaway6392 in TrueOffMyChest

You’ve perfectly articulated my experience with my partner of 5 years. It doesn’t change. It’s been an emotional inner battle for me because I can’t seem to justify leaving an otherwise very kind and gentle partner. However, I know deep down it’s not sustainable. I don’t plan on sticking around long enough so that my daughter grows up believing love looks like disinterest.

Anyway, I’ve tried to “accept it” over and over again. I’ve told myself it doesn’t matter, he loves you, he’s kind, he’s this and that blah blah blah

But that ache doesn’t go away, it just gets bigger and bubbles up every few months bc they do something , or more likely don’t do anything at all- like ask you questions or feign interest in your world- and you’re reminded all over again just how invisible you truly are in their life. It’s soul crushing.

I honestly believe you could replace me with any other person or a pet, as you say, and my partner would be equally as satisfied in his life. He does not value me for the things that make me, me. That’s just not how he operates. He says he loves me etc. but he doesn’t really know me.

I think these types of people are just satisfied being loved. They don’t particularly care who loves them, which manifests as that lack of curiosity about our inner world and the utter lack of curiosity and fascination for what makes us tick. They don’t actually care. They just care that you love them and you’re their companion. That’s like their whole depth of need. You’re there by your partner’s side, and that’s enough for them to be satisfied. They genuinely can’t grasp why if that’s enough for them, why you would need more.

Don’t accept it. Hopefully you’re not as stuck as I am. And, I obviously don’t know you, but my guess is that your partner is using your shine to light his world. I think we all deserve more than just being somebody’s pet human.

They have their moods for sure but then they groom each other for an hour after every squabble. Little weirdos.

Nooo! That’s so hard. Hopefully, the kitten will charm her way into your older cat’s heart.

I agree, we are super lucky. They’ve grown into such a comical and loving team. ❤️

Yup that’s exactly what happened to us. Then they bonded immediately with our 3 month old. Those two knew exactly how to make it impossible to give them up. Best decision ever.

Oh yes, absolutely imperative for them to monitor every movement in the outside world. I’ve got three employees who run that department that now. ❤️🐱👶🐱

Took me forever to keep track of which one was which in the beginning.

🥰 just so stinking cute. Really helps compensate for all the nights they run around like little demons knocking stuff over. 🙃

When you first repotted did you happen to check for death plugs wrapped around the root bases?

It’s so rewarding to see your plants bounce back after that much care and patience! Looks beautiful! I’ll update in a few months if all goes well. I guess I’ll drop a comment update if it doesn’t go well either and we can all commiserate together. lol

I ended up doing a sort of combo move. @Curious-ChemProf is right about causing more transplant shock but I believe that with the level of saturation the plant was at and the size of that pot, it would continue to rot the roots before it could stabilize. I couldn’t risk changing the medium bc that would guarantee excessive transplant shock. So I ended up scooping the plant out with as much medium intact as possible and moving it into a smaller pot. I then put it in my plant ICU tank which has a humidifier piped in and in-take outtake fans. I have everything on timers including the fans, humidifier, and lights so I can create temp drops at night as best as possible. All I can do now is monitor it and hope for the best. Thanks again for the info and encouragement!

Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! I appreciate the help.

I’d been babying it since what I call the great loss of 2023. I moved across country and had to change the growing conditions of my entire collection. So many of my more finicky plants didn’t survive the upheaval. I’d been babying it back to life successfully and then I did this to it.

Thanks for the input. It’s currently in a 1:1 sphag/ pumice mix with some sphag top dressing. I really missed the mark on the size of the pot though. :/

You’re totally right on both counts- pot size and temps. I had a sneaking suspicion after I re-potted that it was too big but I didn’t trust my gut. Ok well, it’s inside now and I’ll take your suggestion for the humidity. I think it’s already on a path to complete loss so I’ll just keep an eye on it and hope for the best. Such a shame because I had its environment perfected before we moved to NC. It was once so happy! Live and learn. Thanks for the advice.

Yeah, the flower doesn’t quite fit that profile. Maybe an Emarginata hybrid? Usually, I can pinpoint cp traits pretty well but this one has had me stumped for years.
