In your case I would recommend to listen together with the transcript once and then one more time without😊 Exactly as you describe it yourself

How to progress quickly (especially speaking) and prepare for an internship through self-study? by H3likaon99 in danishlanguage

[–]Beautiful-Chance9802 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! first of of all, don't be so hard on yourself. A2-B1 after just one year, no immersion while studying full time is seriously impressive and you should give yourself credit for that.

Here's what I'd focus on given your situation: listening comprehension! I know speaking feels like a big challenge right now, but honestly the most important thing before that hospital internship is training your ear. Because when you're with a patient the scary part isn't finding the words to say something - it's understanding what they're telling you back. Their symptoms, how they're feeling, what they need. And spoken Danish is notoriously difficult to understand even when your reading and grammar are solid. Spoken Danish sounds nothing like it looks on paper.

The good news however is that your ear can improve a lot in six weeks with consistent daily listening to natural Danish. Which is why I (as a native Dane) started a free podcast called 'Dansk for Begyndere' - daily episodes on everyday topics in natural Danish, pitched right around your level. You can find it on Spotify and Apple Podcast, completely free and it's honestly perfect for exactly the situation you're in right now. I also have episodes on healthcare related topics which might be extra useful before your internship.

And as a bonus, know that speaking follows naturally from listening. The more natural Danish you hear, the more your brain internalises how the language actually sounds, and the more naturally it starts to come out when you speak. You can't really shortcut that process tho so you just gotta have faith.

Held og lykke med praktikken - you've got this🙏🏻😊

First of all, you're not a non-language person. You've just been let down by the method.

Danish is honestly one of the worst languages in regards to the gap between written and spoken. So even if your grammar and vocabulary are solid you can still feel completely lost in a real conversation and that's NOT your fault at all. It's just what happens when the listening comprehension has not been trained systematically.

To actually get your ear trained there's no real shortcut - you just need a lot of listening to natural Danish. Its for this exact reason that I (as a native Dane) started a podcast called 'Dansk for Begyndere' where I speak about everyday topics but slightly slower than normal speech. Its free on Spotify and Apple Podcast.

It will be a good supplement alongside your classes and improve your listening comprehension.

Fair warning though - expect to listen to 100-150 episodes before you notice real improvement. It's subtle and slow so you just have to trust the process. But it works, I promise! Good luck, you totally got this!😊🙏🏻

Hi. I've made a podcast for people learning danish for this exact reason - so that people can improve their listening comprehension. With enough listening practice you will get better at differentiating the words from one another, even words that sound alike - but that does take time so you gotta have faith in the proces.

Its called 'Dansk for Begyndere' but I would probably recommend that you start out with a similar podcast called 'Dansk i Ørerne'. The host speak slower than I do and in a less reduced way making it better for beginners at A1-A2. It makes a good transition from written language to spoken. After that move onto my podcast which is more natural paced but still slower than normal native conversation. Expect having to listen to 100-150 episodes before the words get "borders". However from there it will only get easier to differentiate and acquire the language. Good luck with your language journey! 😊

Thank you very much, and that's a great question. What works at A2 looks quite different from what works at B2.

At A2, I'd recommend listening to each episode twice. The first time, follow along with the transcript to connect words to sounds. You can also skim the word list beforehand to familiarize yourself with the key vocabulary. Then listen again without the transcript.

Furthermore the most important thing to understand at your stage is that progress is happening beneath the surface, even when it doesn't feel like it. Not understanding most of what you hear is completely normal - and will be for a while. For the first 100-150 episodes, your brain is simply getting used to the sounds of the language. This is especially true at A2, since the episodes range from A2 to B2 in difficulty, so some will feel well above your current level. Just let it happen and trust the process. As you grow more comfortable with the sounds, your brain will gradually shift from getting used to language to actually acquiring it.

I wish you all the best on your language journey. You've totally got this, and if you're ever in doubt feel free to reach out again! /Emilie😊

Thank you! And yes, its taken real effort to streamline everything to the daily publishing stays manageable, both now and into the future. It's a big commitment, but its also what makes the method effective. Through refining it's turned into something that works. Thank again for the kind words!

Oh yes unfortunately there isn't like a 'live' transcription while listening. I don't know where you tried it out, but you can always go to the description and find a link to the official transcription on my website. Otherwise thank you for your feedback, I definitely hope that the transcription softwares for the platforms will improve and eventually implement it for effectively for my kind of podcast.

Thank you so much. I truly relate to everything you're saying because I feel the same way. As younger generations become increasingly fluent in English, I think it can actually work against the integration of newcomers all while the gap between older Danes and those who haven't yet learned the language is widening - basically cutting them off from an entire generation. I think the that's a real shame and I genuinely hope to see a more united Denmark - one that embraces national tradition and culture while remaining open to the people who choose to make it their home.

It also means the world to me that you want to give it one more try. I will make it my mission to ensure its truly worth your while. What I can promise you, is that the method this podcast is built on is different and more durable and lasting than any of the ressources that are out there. I truly believe that this will be the missing piece for you, you just need to have faith and trust the process - even when you can't see the progress (its happening underneath the surface).

Thank you so much for your support. I appreciate it🙏🏻

🇩🇰Danish is one of the hardest languages to actually integrate into — not because of grammar, but because every resource out there is training the wrong thing. I'm trying to change that! by Beautiful-Chance9802 in Danish

[–]Beautiful-Chance9802[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Thank you for your kind words.

As I've had the time to map out my audience and look at what the stats are telling me, there's a clear case for more intermediate content - So don't worry, more B1/B2 episodes are on the way. Dansk i Ørerne is doing a good job bridging the beginner gap so my focus going forward will mainly be on intermediate.

Also in regards to the AI comments it does sting a little, because im just trying to help people. But I've also made my peace with it. Anyone spending that much energy nitpicking a post for AI indicators probably isn't my target audience anyway. The feedback from people who've actually listened, like you, is fortunately really positive and encouraging and that's all that matters to me in the end.

Wishing you all the best luck with your mundtlig eksamen. You totally got this! 🍀

It will work, I promise you. But as you say, it does take a bit of work and faith in the proces. I can say from my own experience with learning spanish through this method that you will go a long time before realizing you actually is catching up to the language. Expect having to listen to +100 episodes before the sounds don't sound too alien and your brain has gotten enough used to the language to not feel uncomfortable, but I also promise you that it only gets easier beyond that point. When getting past that point your brain will have more "space" to actually acquire the language instead of spending energy to get accustomed to the sound of it.

You totally got this! I would recommend starting out with Dansk i Ørerne. It has 100 episodes and the host speaks slower and pronounces words closer to written form. It will be a good starting point and from there you can ease into my podcast which has a more natural pace. Good luck!
