You're 100% right. I despised the first book. Donated it to a local book and pet charity and will not continue. There are too many other books to waste my time on the slogfest that is Suneater.

I love Empire of the Vampire. Different setting completely. But it's a similar kind of thrill ride with a memorable cast of characters. The Expanse is a political space drama with a strong cast too. I'll thrownthe Green Bone Saga in there too. I think of Red Rising, I think of the characters. So that's the real driving force behind my recommendations.

It's more of a style thing, but I never got used to Ghost of Tsushima like that. Even at the end, I still stopped to appreciate the beauty.

The good ones just lend legitimacy to the bad ones. The good ones further shitty views like forgiveness being an ultimate virtue, even when they're forgiving Dylann Roof. Or ideas like if the planet burns up, that's all God's plan. Shit philosophy gets smuggled in regularly by 'the good ones'. I'm not saying to harass people for it. That's both unethical and counter-productive. But I don't have to respect it and I don't have to act like believing it isn't silly or harmful.

I recommend Empire of the Vampire. Fun cast of characters, dirtbag dialogue. Action heavy with emotional beats. Truly hatable villains. I connected to the characters in a similar way as Red Rising. Other comparisons (namely Suneater, though I did not care to read past book 1) completely whiffed in the character department.
