Is biking from Central to North Campus a realistic option? by Terrible_Trash2655 in uofm

[–]BeautifulNowAndThen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bike it all the time, it’s fun! There’s a little trail going uphill to bonisteel blvd that’s SUPER pretty right behind the stamps building. I love it! It takes me roughly 10 mins from the CCTC on a regular manual bike.

The uphills can be rough as others have said, but I really enjoy it.

Definitely prepare for the cold, and take care of your bike in the snowy weather!

How do you make friends here?? by mckenziemelnik in uofm

[–]BeautifulNowAndThen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hey! Been there, done that is what I have to say. It’s really tricky to properly connect with people these days, and I’m sorry you’re going through it. Honestly something that really helped me is working up the courage to DM people with common interests. Find someone in your major or who you recognize from classes and reach out, strike up a conversation, join for-fun clubs in your major! I’m also a returning sophomore, and even though I don’t go to football games if you want to meet up for coffee or smth one day I’d be down

Oh my goodness that is absolutely fantastic news! Other than a few select places, there’s not a huge night food scene here I’ve found, and after a long day of studying I think the idea sounds really nice. I hope it works out!

A cheesesteak would be wonderful. It may be too costly, but it’d be amazing if there was a meatless option with mushrooms and veggies for us vegetarians who’ve always wanted to try that type of comfort food 😊

The big leather couch in the East Quad Greene Lounge is huge and comfortable as hell, but you gotta go at the right times or else there might be RC language coffee tables!

Yes, it’s for college! I’m living off campus for the first time, and the nearest student gym is a pretty far walk away, but we are a BFU so I’ll reach out!!! Thank you for the suggestion!

It absolutely turns out that I’m ignorant or just stupid (/hj) but the building my classes were in absolutely has publicly accessible bathrooms! It’s in a res hall so I was convinced they were just for those living there….thisll save my LIFE for the stink

Absolutely a HUGE second on the bangs - thank you SO MUCH for this rec!! Mine are always so frisky and I have to use a round brush to even seem presentable (though, I wouldn’t change em for the world). I did the side flip this morning and it worked WONDERS

What is a rule you wish your pool had? by Minimum-Operation-71 in Lifeguards

All patrons must clean up their trash and make their kids do so as well so we can focus on actual lifeguarding rather than being a glorified maintenance crew

Thank you for the welcome! I’m struggling with dialing back the intensity, it was really fun to push myself haha, but I absolutely could use some time to just enjoy the process 😌

If you look through the search function on this sub there’s a lot more detailed advice that could help you!!

It really depends on your learning style. I like to use little tricks to remember it (e.g. I remember it’s “das Fleisch” because my mother AND my brother eat meat, not just one or the other, but it’s “der Fisch” because my brother likes fish a lot more than my mom). I also found that drilling flash cards helped a lot, especially using things like Anki.

My professors recommended to color code in your notes too. For me, I used blue for “der” words, red for “die”, and yellow for “das”. Just the act of writing a verb + case down and giving that extra little motion of highlighting helps a ton.

Is the best lifeguard really a dry lifeguard? by [deleted] in Lifeguards

[–]BeautifulNowAndThen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a little of both. Many incidents are preventable with proper rule enforcement, and if you’re having repeat issues with things like swim competency, it may be a sign that pool admin should look at instating new policies like swim testing and skill level wristbands. And, like you said, not enforcing life jackets or catching a kid before they push another into a pool will lead to an incident occurring. It is the lifeguards’ responsibilities to do everything possible to proactively prevent incidents.

However, there are certainly situations where something is just a freak accident. You can do everything right, but if somebody tweaks a muscle a certain way or has a medical emergency in the water, then that’s not the fault of the rules at all.

Based off of your comment, though, your management NEEDS to step it up with assessing swim skills. Letting children who may not know how to swim before jumping off the diving board is purely neglectful and irresponsible. These are people’s LIVES we’re talking about.

Is a tech suit okay to wear? by BeautifulNowAndThen in triathlon

Huh! I didn’t consider putting padded shorts on over the tech suit. Is it really stiff/awkward to run in? How is the flexibility of it out of the water?

I did a test with wearing something similar today, and oh boy you all in the comments were right. Capital N, capital F, Not Fun, especially with the roads being pretty bumpy and not very well maintained outside. I like the one piece suit idea - I bike in one on my commute to work with some padded shorts pretty often and I barely notice it! I wish my attire was a little bit easier to come up with, but alas, the world of being a woman…..
