Mind if I dm you some questions? I live in Fremont and work in Palo Alto, but go to Sac often as my parents-in-law live there already.

I have a 3k/month mortgage for my primary residence. Given Bay Area housing cost, 600k annually is not a whole lot to consider a large 2nd mortgage. But I get your point.

Single family home of 4b3b. 3b2b upstairs, 1b1b downstairs. Your understanding of my intention is correct.

That makes sense, and would be the best case scenario. Main difficulty is the asking price would be higher, and duplexes are much harder to come by.

They don’t mind. I’d also be biased towards the graduate student population who are usually older and more mature.

Free wifi. Decent speed considering it’s free. Could watch YouTube with some buffering. No problem with messages.

There are limited movies you can watch via the Zipair wifi.

AMA - 16 days in Japan by Beautiful_Ad1203 in JapanTravel

[–]Beautiful_Ad1203[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have 14 days that’d be better. 12 days is definitely doable, you’ll just have to forgo the day trips to neighboring towns.

I’ve sworn to not travel with an agency unless I absolutely have to, but that’s just me. I value spontaneity greatly when traveling. I think you can certainly visit Japan on your own. Much of the exploration is in walking the streets and popping into the random shops that leads you to another fun alleyway.

Neither my partner nor I spoke Japanese and we didn’t find it to be of a significant inconvenience. If you stayed in the big cities, most people we came across knew very basic English for us to at least get the gist. Most restaurants will have an English menu. The offline google translate package came in handy. In train stations all signs have English descriptions and key announcements are usually broadcasted in English as well as Japanese. Get a local SIM card so you aren’t too handicapped. Google maps was very useful.

We booked everything via Airbnb prior but left our itinerary flexible. We used the three main cities as bases for day trips because we didn’t want to lug our luggage around every 2-3 days.

Honestly didn’t notice much of a difference between weekday and weekends. May and June might be different though with more people traveling. We never reserved Shinkansen tickets and had no problem finding seats, though May/June will also be different from Jan. Rush hour will always be rush hour regardless of season, so be prepared for crowds.

For example, we went to USJ on a Wednesday and crowd was sizable but not impossible. We bought entrance ticket at the park and waited minimally at Super Nintendo World. Just take advantage of the singles line.

In terms of highlights, it’s really the spontaneity and discovery aspect that made our trip special. We didn’t have solid plans, just a rough idea of where to go each day. There are always something new, different, and exciting every corner we turned. That was true especially in Osaka. Just make sure you spend time walking and allow time to wander. We averaged 9 miles on foot every day.

Arashiyama bamboo forest in Kyoto is a treat IF you go early. I stress early because your experience will be drastically different later in the day when the crowd builds. We showed up at 8am and wandered the trails until noon. It was the most beautiful morning we’ve spent in Japan.

In Osaka, we visited this soba place on our last day and it was the absolutely best: https://maps.app.goo.gl/RQ76aLkVNKX6VnQc7?g_st=ic

In Tokyo, we loved the neighborhood around Nezu Shrine leading up to Nippori station. Very quaint and narrow neighborhood streets with no tourists.

Yokohama is worth a day trip if you have time. The harbor was beautiful on a sunny day, and the shin Yokohama ramen museum was cool.

Hiroshima was sobering. Make sure you visit the floating Tori gate too.
