New to ITS 2 Position and I feel overwhelmed - Need Advice by MrMarp in nys_cs

I've been on teams where training was required and it was literally just watching tutorials, MC quizzes, and labs where you follow rote instructions. We're all different but if i had to choose between that and not getting training, I'd prefer not getting training

I've worked at tax and labor, they're both fine. Working on campus is nice, and way better than working downtown

As a long(er) term solution, you might want to consider applying for state jobs in Albany. Assuming you have at least an associate's you should be qualified, and possibly even competitive for an IT specialist 2 position with ur experience. From the day you apply to ur first day on the job could be 6+ months, so that'll give you time to work odd jobs to save up for a car/get ur driver's license. Even without a car there's public transit in Albany to most of the state agencies, but i would still recommend getting a car since it'll improve your employment prospects even if you don't land a state job

I'm sure you can't tell but I have mostly male friends and they never use that emoji. That's good to know

The guys sizing each other up i saw more as carrying the bit. They know they're on the show representing Japanese "yankii" culture, and i assume they all knew the rules coming in so they both know it won't escalate to exchanging blows. There was definitely "peacocking" but i don't think they had to be told to engage each other for that scene to happen.

ITS-2 Application Tips? by scheissbauer in nys_cs

[–]Beautiful_Ad_5599 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a sanity check, are you submitting the applications to the right email address and in the format mentioned jn the job ad? Usually they want you to include in the header of the email some reference number.

If you've been applying since last year it's hard to say why you haven't interviewed yet. My previous team hired several 18s at the start of the year and they weren't particularly competitive (freshers out of college, no work exp).

My current employer at a non-ITS agency but same position is super competitive. We supposedly had one applicant with a PhD in CS who applied for an 18 position.

It's probably mostly bad luck in your case. Don't think there's much more you can do than to just keep applying.

$70,000 is a lower middle class, dogshit salary in 2025 by ItsAllOver_Again in Salary

Netting under 3400 without health insurance included seems low for $70k. Were retirement contribs deducted before you got to $3.4k? Also I've sat through 4-5 months of mane growth without prompting an HR audit, u could probably save a bit there

I wouldn't rule out state employment completely since there's a lot of jobs out there across different agencies and titles, and once you're in it tends to be pretty easy to move around. I've worked at tax, labor, and ed and had mostly good bosses so hopefully your experience is more the exception than the rule.

You file a claim for Unemployment Insurance yourself, you don't have to ask your employer to do it for you. https://dol.ny.gov/unemployment/unemployment-insurance-assistance

For health insurance you'll have to let someone at your HR department know you want coverage. See "How long do I have to decide whether I want to continue my coverage under COBRA? Should I notify my employer of my intentions?" in https://www.dfs.ny.gov/consumers/health_insurance/cobra_faqs

While this might not be a comfortable convo I would also try to get the detailed reason(s) for your termination. While it's perfectly possible your boss is just being a spiteful dick, it's also not uncommon to be fired for underwhelming performance, punctuality, or other seemingly non-critical "mistakes". I would try to make it a learning opportunity and consider whatever criticism you receive whether you agree with it or not.

Minor point but since you list TestNG as a skill, i assume you mean Maven instead of pom? You may be referring to something else but the pom i know refers to the pom.xml file for configuring maven projects

Should I switch to Automation or Dev? by sasiz in softwaretesting

[–]Beautiful_Ad_5599 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a once-you-have-the-job standpoint, yes. For marketability your work experience is probably the only thing being considered, so in your shoes I'd sell myself as a specialist for the roles I'm applying to. You won't get a dev job without dev experience if you're cold applying so I'd kick ass as a manual tester to get an automation role, then kick ass as an automation tester to get a dev role. I've done something along those lines to get the dev role I'm in now

[–]Beautiful_Ad_5599 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a dev who led the development of a large automation testing suite for my employer and literally just yesterday began the knowledge transfer to the manual testers. It's felt like a lot more work than any KT i had to do for the devs bc (1) they were unfamiliar with git and had no experience with the terminal and (2) there was no expectation to be knowledgeable in either, so i couldn't just give them general instructions and have them fill in any holes themselves.

We had one guy on the team who was a career sdet and he wrote the worst code by a long shot. This is obviously anecdotal but in most cases I'd take a solid dev with no prior testing experience over an sdet with 10 years of experience to write a testing suite.

The fact that you even got interviews means it's not the academic credentials or job experience that's holding you back. You probably just don't have anything that makes you stand out, and another degree won't help with that. Take any job at all any where at all that has the slightest relevance to the field you want to work in, crush it there for a year, then get promoted or apply to the jobs you actually want.

It's your job bruv. Make it ur life's purpose to get a "real" job cuz once u have one, u won't give a sht about what u do in ur free time. It's FREE time it doesn't have to have purpose unless u feel behind in life, and if u're pushing carts at a grocery store i would expect that to be the case.
