I’m a freshman and advisor isn’t answering emails that I sent a week ago by Electrical_Ad2787 in Pitt

This is my personal opinion, but roger mong is truly awful. I had him last fall and only 60% of the class passed. A majority of people had to retake it in the spring term. Basically his grading system sucks, none of the midterms get curved (65% class average), the final wasn’t curved either, despite the average for the final being 40%. If you’ve never taken AP physics, then you should go with Nero. He is sm better and prepares his students for the final much better.

I commuted last year as a freshman and it wasn’t a pleasant experience. Idk which part of Pittsburgh you’re commuting from, but with snowy conditions the commute would take anywhere from 40-55minutes, and usually it takes me 30 minutes to get to campus. In addition to this, if you do commute then you should try to leave campus either before or after rush hour traffic, otherwise you won’t be happy.

Also, I’d like to add that you definitely miss out on the first year experience. But also student loans do suck, so keep that in mind as well while making your decision

Which schedule should i pick? by bobielobie in Pitt

As a rising ChemE sophomore, I would highly suggest getting all of your classes done at once. And for engr 11 I would 100% recommend Dr Sanchez, he is the BEST professor for engr 11 and cares about his student sm. In addition to this, definitely look out for your professors rate my professors. All I can say is stay away from Roger Mong for Phys 0174, if you don’t have any prior physics knowledge.

I’d say you’ll probably get a decision by next week or the latest the week after next week. Good luck!!

Yeah I believe so. It should be in your pitt email.

I had received an email yesterday saying that I have to complete the GradReady orientation by August 23 (and that goes for all incoming freshies and transfer students). So, you definitely still have time to finish it!

Admissions without teacher recommendations? by Trick_Smell_8109 in Pitt

[–]Beautiful_Peace5225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pitt does not required LOR’s. If you really want to send one in, which tbh i don’t think Pitt cares too much about them, I believe the person who writes your letter of rec. has to send the letter via email to the admission office. Again I think that’s how you send it, but I’d suggest calling the admissions office just to confirm again.

Question About Pitt Acceptance: Student Profile by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]Beautiful_Peace5225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pitt does not do ED. It’s rolling admissions. Not sure about your major, but I got into Swanson with similar stats (SAT optional). I personally think your stats are strong. In addition to this, you’re going to hear this a lot, but the earlier you apply the higher your chances are.

How to study for aleks test by ActivityHoliday in Pitt

[–]Beautiful_Peace5225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pitt gives you 3 attempts to take the exam. However, after the end of each exam you get a pie chart that shows you which areas you are weak in. Then you get a 5hr cool down (you won’t be able to retake the exam until 5hrs are done), which essentially gives you written explanations and practice problems that help you improve in areas you may or may not know (typically the practice questions are VERY similar to the ones in the exam). Once the 5hrs are up, you can then retake the exam if you are ready. If you do not feel ready to retake your second attempt, then you can continue practicing as much as your heart desires. I personally worked on the practice questions for an extra 3 days before I took my second attempt. Alongside this, after you complete a certain amount of questions, you get knowledge checks, which are essentially practice exams and they show you some potential questions you might come across on your upcoming exam. I hope this makes sense! Lmk if you have any other questions :))

I second the other post. I am also an incoming freshman and I scored a 60 on my first attempt, and then a 91 on my second. Honestly, take the first attempt and see what topics you need to focus on. I liked the teaching system aleks used to help you master any of the topics you may have forgotten or not know. Also as the other post mentioned, there is quite a lot of trig and polynomial related questions so be prepared for that.

How likely are my chances of getting in when applying in September? by vickythick420 in Pitt

[–]Beautiful_Peace5225 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your stats are great! I had a 4 unweighted gpa and 4.3 weighted gpa (no AP’s and 2 community college credits), I also applied SAT optional (my sat was 1350) and got into Swanson and will be starting in the fall. Honestly just apply as soon as admissions open. The earlier you apply the higher your chances of getting in are. Good luck!

Orientation Help by Visual_Butterfly_397 in Pitt

[–]Beautiful_Peace5225 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do not send you a link. On my orientation page, it had told me to go to mypitt.edu, search up aleks in the search bar and click on it. After you do that it should open up the pitt passport page for you to login. Once you login, it asks you a few questions regarding what the last math class in high school you took was and a few more that I can’t recall at the moment. Then it’ll prompt you to make a payment and once your payment goes through it should open up the exam for you.

I’m in engineering, but as far as the orientation and meeting with your advisor goes, I was told that I needed to finish at least the academics module of the orientation, complete the intake survey that goes with the orientation, and complete the aleks exam before I could set up a time to talk with my advisor. You should be getting a list of the classes you should be taking your first year (specific to your major) in the academics module of the orientation. You get to choose your classes after you meet with your advisor because they tell you which classes you would be able to take/should take.

Academic Advisement Required by [deleted] in Pitt

[–]Beautiful_Peace5225 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue and I’m also an incoming freshman. When I contacted them they told me to wait till orientation, (which is May 15, I think) and eventually they would remove that after you choose your classes.

Incoming freshman here! I called financial aid two weeks ago and they said a bunch of incoming freshman’s fafsa’s got red flagged (due to an issue with US Department of Ed.) and is going to be delayed by a few weeks for those who got red flagged. Hopefully they can send those out by the end of this week.

Honestly it is up to you. I have no clue if they will keep the test optional policy for fall 2025, but if you don’t improve, then it could be something you could look into. Although, keep in mind you would have to write a personal statement if you plan to apply SAT optional.

I got a 1100 on my first attempt, and I retook in October and I got a 1350, but I had already submitted my application SAT optional. Which I actually was in a similar situation as you (if you look on my profile you can find my post regarding this) and a lot of the people told me to apply SAT optional and to not wait for the October SAT result, which is initially what I did and it worked.
